Technically, it’s a berry. Yet unlike any other berry you can think of, it’s not sweet or inviting to eat while still on the branch. The name avocado comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl, which means “testicle,” so named because avocados typically grow in pairs and hang heavy on the tree. Spanish conquistadors came to call them aguacate, a name that was further bastardized by English speakers (a young George Washington wrote in 1751 of the popularity of “agovago pears” in Barbados); once exported back to Spain, they became known as abogado, a word that meant “advocate” or “lawyer.” The avocado fruit became a staple in Central and South America but didn’t land in California until the 1850s, when an avocado tree was imported from Nicaragua by a private citizen as a botanical curiosity.

i go there for things like jalapenos, tomatillos, limes, other chiles, avocados, herbs etc. all muchhhh cheaper than the other stores.

right now avocados are 6 for 99 cents...now they are pretty small avocados...but that is still ridiculously cheaper. jalapenos are 3 lbs for 98 cents. love it.

haha well I've been in grocery stores in all parts of the country and it is just isn't the same. unless you go to a specialty market.

No worries on Chicago, there. Cocaine byproducts or not. When I moved to Chicago from southern California and Tucson, I thought it was the end of my life with Mexican food. It turned out it was just the beginning. Mexican grocers, tortilla factories, restaurants, and tacquerias like I'd never seen before. Plus, some neighborhoods are more Mexican than Mexico City.

No worries on Chicago, there. Cocaine byproducts or not. When I moved to Chicago from southern California and Tucson, I thought it was the end of my life with Mexican food. It turned out it was just the beginning. Mexican grocers, tortilla factories, restaurants, and tacquerias like I'd never seen before. Plus, some neighborhoods are more Mexican than Mexico City.

Obviously, sd86 is right and asuhater is wrong. I have a lot of friends who moved out of LA to the east coast and the two universal complaints they have about their new hometowns are the (relatively) shitty weather and the lack of inexpensive and amazing avocados.

I have at least half of one everyday. More after the nutritional content than anything but they make salmon taste that much better.
