Where the fuck did CryptoCat go? Got a new job, stopped smoking ganja, and forgot all about us...

Are you sure that he stopped smoking? Maybe that is the reason he forgot all about us.Chicat wrote:Where the fuck did CryptoCat go? Got a new job, stopped smoking ganja, and forgot all about us...
Erlich Bachmann: Richard wrote the code, yes, but the inspiration was clear. Let me ask you something. How fast do you think you could jack off every guy in this room? Cause I know how long it would take me. And I could prove it.

He rarely posts on FB too, so he seems to have cut the cord.

Wish he would look at us and post here. He always had really interesting takes; and his tech knowledge was a terrific resource, too.

It really is. He was very talented and knowledgeable about a lot of things, although a little sensitive about German issues.

Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
So I'm guessing what pissed him off was JMJ deleting the links to pictures he posted that were of our favorite poster after said poster complained. JMJ further called it Ace-ish.scumdevils86 wrote:Really odd. All of his posts were edited on the day of his last visit and deletedgumby wrote:Katz? And took his work with him.
The pictures were hosted at public sites (one on a social media site, one at the UofA athletic site). You have pictures on public sites but you object to links to them being posted here?
You'll be missed Katz. Hope you come back. But if you don't, thanks for the PM on the way out!

Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
If I crossed a line, all of you have the opportunity to vote me out of power. It's the democratic way. I'm up for renewal this summer.
I was PM'd by multiple members not liking the direction of that thread. The images meant for a few shouldn't be posted for many. We have a thread on revenge porn discussing this same thing. I get why folks poke fun. But posting personal pictures of members and significant others without permission isn't a line I want to cross. Especially in a mocking fashion. If they posted it here and and it gets the Mosh Girl treatment, then fine, but searching the Internet for random member images posted elsewhere to post here doesn't sit well with me.
So upon being introduced to the thread and asked to lock the thread, which I didn't, I simply removed offending images, I felt the need to say something.
If I stepped on toes, I'm sorry.
But I can't be all things to all people and I would rather be unpopular and draw a line in the sand separating harmless shenanigans from Ace-like shenanigans. If people disagree, I'll happily be voted out.
Given that nobody contacted me on any of this I can't say what, why, or whom.
It truly sucks to not have Katz. He's a great contributor.
But attacking posts is one thing. Attacking posters is even accepted. But from what I know that thread became personal. That crosses the line for me.
But again, nobody emailed me on anything related to Katz.
Sucks I may have driven away a valued member.

Within my first months at GOAZCATS, I chimed in on a spat twixt KV and someone, posting the meme on winning an Internet argument being tantamount to running a race in the special Olympics. Win or lose, well, you get it.Chicat wrote:Seems like a silly reason to pack up your shit (almost literally) and leave.

I posted something in jest, that is both intended offensive and a bit comical, but it was in bad taste. I had a line drawn in the sand for me. I didn't leave. 10 years later I'm still part of the community.
I hope Katz comes back. But given his Internet accumen, and how easy a victim Machina makes of himself, given that asking me to take the pictures down meant acknowledging it was him and his wife acting goofy as Napolean Dynomite and such, I believe Machina and the other posters who messaged me to take the pictures down.
Like I said, if the image is posted here, fair game.

Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
I've been a part of a website where Internet sleuthing led to bunches of images of members being posted, some more private in nature, where rumors of infidelity amongst the married ownership led to "cuckholding" claims and attributions placed upon the dude, which led to divorce rumor, and a whole lotta of shit.
I don't like how quickly searching the Internet for crap like that can get out of hand in any fashion.
But I am sorry I was obligated to do something about it.
Despite Chi's avatar, this isn't a free-for-all Revenge of the Nerds style.
There's very little censorship here. Mostly self-censorship. Or group moderation. If we want hard and fast rules to know where the lines are, I suppose we can vote those in.
But this site has given far more leeway than most sites.

Thanks, JMJ. What you say makes sense, but there must be a part of the story that we just don't know because deleting a pic that was placed in jest doesn't seem like the reason somebody would leave, especially without protesting. Katz does protest, and quietly leaving doesn't sound like him.

I'd hope. But I probably should have PM'd Katz rather than just deleting and uttering "Ace-ish". Only thing I'd have done different. Should have given him a chance to talk things out.Longhorned wrote:Thanks, JMJ. I don't like being responsible for this crap.
It's bullshit that I can fuck up cleaning up others shit and possibly be the reason a popular poster has left over how I aided a poster most only enjoy taking to task, who, himself, halfway embraces the contrarian schtick.
If you don't want goofy adult costume-wearing pictures posted here, don't post them publicly.
I'm not embarrassed over any picture of mine on Facebook. Most of you are friends of mine on Facebook.
But at the same time, I don't get the need to publicly mock others.
So, I'm just pissed and confused by both sides here.

If I posted a picture that I thought was unfairly deleted or felt like I was perceived to be some kind of bad person because of that posting and subsequent deletion, then it's on me to reach out either in the thread or via PM to protest. You explained why it was deleted. No need for further explanation or some sort of private coddling to manage someone's over-sensitivity. If in fact it was that incident that drove Katz away I find it rather ironic. It's not as if he was the victim of someone posting his personal pictures publicly without his permission.
I've gotten into it with Katz in the past, mainly over politics and his seeming sensitivity to the way in which Americans perceive Germans and Russia and our government's dealings with Europe. Our arguments have often gotten somewhat personal pretty quickly. We both seem to be sensitive to personal slights and the perception of disrespect. Not that that's a surprise. I just described three quarters of the people on the Internet. But I wouldn't have expected that you taking down a pic would lead to all of his posts being deleted and him leaving for good. Seems somewhat out of character, but then again can we really know anyone just from what they do and say on a message board?
Anyway, he'll be missed by some of us, but if he doesn't want to be here then oh well. See ya Katzenfreund.

Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
Yeah, my best guess is that JMJ's deletion isn't the reason. In looking for a reason, it's natural to look to the last post, but the actual last post could have been deleted entirely, and the reason for leaving and erasing everything could have nothing to do with posting at all. Erasing everything you've ever posted sounds like something else is going on. Like your boss is an ASU alumn and one of your coworkers threatened to point your boss to this site. In any case, JMJ, you shouldn't think twice about this again.

Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
Machina's wife was actually quite attractive. I certainly had no problem with JMJ deleting it. It was meant for friends and family not public consumption.
I found it best with Katz to just stay away from politics.

This makes more sense to me. A tiff over one incident doesn't trigger the hassle of erasing every post.Longhorned wrote:Yeah, my best guess is that JMJ's deletion isn't the reason. Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
Yeah, too strange to think it was entirely just voluntary on Katz's part, and that no one else got involved.
Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
If I've offended anyone in the past, present...or for that matter the future, I am not sorry and I don't take it back. If you need to pack up and leave too, then that's on you.
If Katz really left, it's a weak move IMO. I mean, fight it out if you feel you've been wronged....or don't, just leave the sandbox--that's fine.

Plus, if he was mad at anyone here, he'd have left a cryptic message. Like instead of deleting every post, replace each one with a letter to sequentially spell out something like I V E H A D I T W I T H A L L Y O U R P A S S I V E E L V I S I M P E R S O N A T I N G P O S T S T H A T N O B O D Y B U T M E N O T I C E D I M L O O K I N G A T Y O U C A T G R A D 9 7 T H E G I G I S U P S O C O N S I D E R Y O U R S E L F O U T E D Y O U V E G A S A C T F U C K

Katz didn't delete anything off of TOS. He didn't cover his tracks there. I don't know what happend. Katz is a very intelligent person but sensitive. He very well may have felt a little hurt and overreacted. It's not like I've never thought about disappearing from a forum. Although I never did because my emotions would cool down after a short time.

Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
Some of you here know me away from the UA boards, and yet, as much as I dislike Machina as a poster and think he's a complete tool on this board, I wouldn't want what Katz did to Machina to happen to me either (even if I did snicker seeing those pics).JMarkJohns wrote:Within my first months at GOAZCATS, I chimed in on a spat twixt KV and someone, posting the meme on winning an Internet argument being tantamount to running a race in the special Olympics. When I was moderating TOS, I can remember during one of WOW's meltdowns him posting pics and private info of not only me, but of other posters who had the temerity to call him out on his actions, and getting subsequent PMs from those people begging that it all be taken down ASAP. So, I get it, not everyone is as open as Merkin and his jorts, and I think that should be respected. I know my Facebook profile settings and what I post isn't 100% public all the time.
I also remember the 2nd week I was on TOS back in 2006 I said something that really rankled a few of the board vets, and got a really hot PM from someone who shall remain nameless. We worked it out over PM without me feeling the need to backtrack or apologize, but I look back upon it as a hazing ritual from vets threatened by the noob more than anything else. Seems to me from his posting history that Katz could have been reasonable enough to work this out over PM
In any event, I'm fine with what you did JMJ, you have my vote.
My experience with Katz at TOS was less than pleasant, but I've pretty much avoided him since with no issues. I will say he's always been very sensitive about his opinions, as evidenced by his rather thin-skinned last act. But he wasn't a serial or intrusive poster and thus was generally easier to ignore or tolerate. So, while I would welcome him back here, I ain't exactly going to "miss" him.Chicat wrote:I've gotten into it with Katz in the past, mainly over politics and his seeming sensitivity to the way in which Americans perceive Germans and Russia and our government's dealings with Europe. His Photoshop skills were outstanding though, and he was very funny in English, so he must have been the Richard Pryor in Germany. Still Euro-prickly though. He should have learned from Klaudija and Hoya77 how to survive in American without getting so upset.

Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
I don't understand how someone who thinks its no big deal to post personal pictures of others in public spaces without permission of said others is somehow both so insensitive to not think they'll get riled at the mocking and so sensitive to take his ball and go home upon people responding to the mocking.
But whatever. I have real shit to deal with. I'm done thinking about this.
It pisses me off he's painted himself the martyr and me the villain.

What if one morning you woke up and everybody had erased all of their posts except for you?
Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
How is erasing posts about somebody's jump shot retribution for anything? Is this the part where I feel punished?

I'm not feeling anything. Maybe I'm dead and just haven't realized it yet.gumby wrote:How is erasing posts about somebody's jump shot retribution for anything? Is this the part where I feel punished?
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

I don't think anyone thinks that. Just that Katz had a tantrum and took his ball and went home.JMarkJohns wrote: It pisses me off he's painted himself the martyr and me the villain.

Re: The Official Missing Posters Thread
But where was the tantrum? We can guess all we want, but there's no clear link between Katz disappearing and JMJ deleting that pic, which doesn't even make sense as something that would lead somebody to erase everything they've ever written. I think it makes more sense that he got a phone call from somebody who convinced him to run for some kind of public office. "Do you have anything to hide?" How long do you think it took to delete 783 posts.
