Network vs System admin - opinions

Post by phenom5 »

Hey guys,
So I am quickly getting to the point where I need to start looking at moving in a direction of one or the other...network or systems/ server.

Anybody have any thoughts on the value of the two roles? Is one more valuable than the other? I know a lot depends on how the roles are defined in the organization, and A LOT is determined by the individual filling the role, but I am curious if any has opinions on the two career paths.

I would go with network admin with emphasis on security. System administration isn't a stable long term career path IMHO.

Both seem kind of career dead ends where I work at.

Highly paid ones though.

Saying that, I would probably go network admin with an emphasis on wireless technologies, and like SGIT mentioned security is utmost important.

Interesting...I know that down the road I'll probably have to move from technical to management. I was leaning towards network, but I have a decent amount of server experience.
