In my house, Midnight Cowboy is a must-watch movie every Thanksgiving. It's truly our Thanksgiving movie. Our child will never be able to separate Thanksgiving from Ratso Rizzo and Joe Buck.

Stuffing, stuffing and more stuffing please.
Maybe your turkey is dry because of the stuffing? ;)

I tell her not to worry because the whole movie was rated X.

LBdCactus wrote:Going over to have Thanksgiving with the in-laws in Brooklyn, 66% of whom I'm not really speaking to at the moment because of shenanigans they pulled last Thanksgiving. Fun! Brother-in-law had to get a halal turkey. Yes, you read that right. Then cutting out at about 5pm to go get shitfaced in a bar and watch an important soccer game with about 200 other lunatics. Wife is understandably not happy, of course.

Standard stuff I think.
I just cracked open a great mental time capsule seeing this post. So we went over there to this one bedroom apartment and the whole time I'm just antsy hoping dinner is done early enough for me to cut out and head to the city to see that big game. The bro-in-law's gf/fiancee is Turkish. Her gay Turkish friend is there who is allegedly in the closet but seemed obvious to us...? Apparently he is fooling the devout Muslim Turks he works for. Who happen to be the GF''s brothers. Those guys show up a little later, and they definitely had an edge to them, which made me feel bad for the gay dude.

Dinner ends around 4:30 and I'm all..."see ya later, gotta run, be back for the wife and kid in a couple hours." Wife is pissed and in tears as I leave, barely spoke to me all day. In laws are incredulous and pissed that I'm leaving, plus we were already on bad terms because of the drama the previous year.

Oddly, the Turks understood you have to go see important soccer games and enthusiastically wished me luck, hah! Bro in law's fiancee tells me on the way out the door that she also understands, because in Turkey that is normal, but demands I come back with flowers for the wife after the game.

Go to the bar, we win, place is going nuts. Hang out a bit and by 8pm I'm heading back to Brooklyn, reeking of all the beer that was flying at the final whistle. Enter the apartment, sans flowers of course because I totally forgot, and immediately sense a disturbance in the force. Everyone is a little less festive. Did the brothers find out the gay guy is gay? Did someone accidentally put some bacon in their mashed potatoes? Is everyone still mad at me for leaving?

I have no clue, but soon after the brothers and the GF are screaming at each other in Turkish. The older brother has a vein popping out of his forehead, screaming and punching the table. Then he storms out of the apartment and slams the door, while the GF runs to the bedroom crying. The rest of us are left in silence in the living room. I'm still buzzed and find it amusing. As the gay guy was explaining it was just some family shit, the brother pops his head back into the apartment and in his thick accent says "Sorry! Happy Thanksgiving, have a wonderful night!" with a huge used car salesmanesque smile, and heads back out the door. I can't help but laugh.

So the rest of the night they try and explain what happened, but I don't even care, because we won and I've had seven or eight too many. Night ends, and shortly after the bro in law breaks up with the fiancee, and now I don't have to pretend I like hanging out with those maniacs.

Tomorrow I anticipate a much quieter affair, at home with the family. But who knows.... Happy Thanksgiving y'all!

Best fresh turkey, courtesy of wife's sister, and brown sugar-cinnamon carrots, stuffing and pumpkin and cherry pie, courtesy of wife, in Northern AZ.

Three types of fresh-baked cookies too. French Onion casserole, like the rest, from scratch, with the ttaters and turkey gravy courtesy of yours truly.

Wow, what a day, and thanks for the support guys! I seriously think I'm going to have to "grill" the turkey from here on out. The pecan smoke gave a nice sweet taste to the meat and this was on of the juiciest Turkeys I've ever had. Even my extremely picky father-in-law loved it!

I've got a gas BBQ now, my Weber Kettle, which I did love, having rusted back into the earth from whence it came. I am in the process of building a bench for the Gas BBQ after 6 years of promising to 'get er done'.

As for TG plans, last years celebration was cancelled due to lack of anything to give thanks for, but this year we somehow managed to not go up in a nuclear holocaust as a result of last year's catastrophe, so there will be about 30 friends over for the traditional kick on. Slow cooked Turkey Breast and loads of trimmings to go with it, desserts to kill for, and enough wine to float a battleship. I think we'll be jolly enough.

Turns out my wife's brothers and sister are all scattering out with their better half's in-laws inadvertently leaving their father all alone. So, me and the family ordered a meal at Fry's (meal for 6 for $50) and will be at his place Thursday. After making this announcement one of her brothers has decided to join us.

as someone who doesn't celebrate a horrible holiday such as thanksgiving, i'll just enjoy the time off that comes with it, grab a couple turkeys while on sale and eat them at my leisure at a later date.
It's long past time to bring this back to the court, let's do it with a small update:
