Twitter Hack

Post by Chicat »

A virtual shit-ton of prominent accounts were hacked today by a bitcoin scammer.

Bill Gates
Elon Musk
Apple
Kanye
Uber
Jeff Bezos
and more

The internet, and ESPECIALLY social media, promised to educate us to other viewpoints and shared experiences based on connecting the world, presumably for the greater good.

Instead, this lauded connectivity has served as invitation for the gleefully stupid to revel in, promote, and celebrate their stupidity. It only takes 5 minutes on Facebook to confirm this. It's striking how degraded Facebook's user base has become in the past 5 years.

People just aren’t all that bright. Just read about some woman who didn’t realize she was being scammed until she showed up in Nigeria expecting to get married.

My parents received a call last week from Amazon asking about a $400 purchase. They didn't make a purchase and they ended up giving this nice person on the phone a whole bunch of info.

There was never a purchase made and my parents had to freeze all of their accounts.

I had to explain to them that Amazon would never call them. I then asked if they ever looked on their Amazon account to see if there was a charge.... of course they didn't.

Whoever hacked it must have been doing it as a test to see what they could get into and for how long. There is a lot more damage a sophisticated hacking group could do than have people donate to a Bitcoin scam.

People are that dumb. You should see some of the scams and fraudulent emails and texts I've seen people fall for in my 13 years working in banking. People think it's just the old and confused. It certainly isn't.

See my post above. I've unfortunately seen stuff like you've described first hand thousands of times in the last 13 years. To the tune of millions of dollars.

Yup. I had a patient once who went to the Philippines thinking he was getting married. He came back to the US and became suicidal.
Another one who spent over $30,000 in one year on some website communicating with a Chinese woman he was going to marry.

I had a man once probably 10 years ago that blew over150k wiring money to his new wife in Jamaica. Guy was in his 70s and recently widowed. Lonely, didn't know how to live alone. By the time it was over he had lost all of his savings and couldn't even pay his utility bills. But throughout it all he insisted it was real and he was getting married to this lady from Jamaica. Terrible.

Imagine all they could do really. Have Trump tweet that he's having Biden arrested. Have Biden tweet a confession to some crime and announcing he's dropping out. Anything really
