In other shit-news, a pretty close friend's 20 yr old son committed suicide late Monday nite or early yesterday morning. My dad is constantly on our case about our weight. Says we get it from our mother's side of the family.

Saying that while he is on his 5th coffee mug of boxed red wine.

I second your last sentence O.

Found out this afternoon that my best friend from grade school took his own life due to depression brought on by medical issues and financial issues that came from the medical bills because his wife had to quit work to take care of him, leaving them with no health insurance. This country is so fucked up.

In glaring contrast to the above my family has every resource and privilege one could want in caring for itself, but in that embarrassment of riches we self-sabotage with petty presumption. Our recognition of our blessings dissolves in moments of needless selfishness, and so often I wonder how it was that we came this far. Anyone can be a model person, friend, son, or leader when shit is easy ..... character only counts when it's hard. In the last 10 days I've had to make decisions that I know were right, but it has been a wretched event. If I manage somehow to disappoint everyone it will be the only marker of my pitiful wisdom.

I hate that shit. Especially if something distracts you as you’re browsing and the next thing you know you’re halfway into act 1.

Those machines you buy your transit tickets for, like the El in Chicago and the R in Philadelphia. They should design the interface as if you're trying to buy a transit ticket. The train's coming and you're in this protracted bureaucratic struggle, like you're applying for citizenship. Every complicated step involves all kinds of criteria you're not eligible for, denying the whole process and sending you back to stage 1 to try your hand again.

Stuck in Tusayan for the night after running out of time/energy due to the Pipeline fire diversion. So fucking close to Sedona and we gotta get yet another hotel room. Groan. Across the street from the hotel is a restaurant. Online it has no menu. So I call:

"There's no menu on your website"
"We don't post it online, it's on a board in front of the hotel."
"Then how do I know if I even want to come to your restaurant?"
"In this town it's all walk-up business (bullshit), you check out the menu and decide if you want a meal. There's no reservations in this town, come on over, it's all walk-in service." (bullshit)

mmmmmmmmmmmkay 10 minutes later:

"Hi, dinner for two, please."
"Our restaurant is closed, we have a staff shortage."
"I was on the phone to Vernon just 10 minutes ago and he said to come on over."

1000 yard stare .... silence.

"Honey, just .... let's go .... It's OK thank you very much!"

It's clear by now that what America's service industry plans to do is refuse to pay enough to staff itself while paring back capacity and raising prices and blaming it on inflation/Biden/Putin/socialism/Covid/climate change/tooth fairy/Satan. In truth, it's just capitalism seeking leverage.

Try getting morning light? I also had insomnia but have been sleeping really well since I've been doing this. And, I've cut back on drinking too, though I had done that some time ago. An occasional beer or whiskey on the weekends.

I've worked really hard to get my sleep on track. I wear an oura ring and it showed how fucked up my sleep had been for decades. Things that have helped me:

1. Get more daylight as Osborn has said especially in the morning. Get outside for at least 15 minutes.
2. Stay on a consistent schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time as much as possible.
3. Don't drink caffeine after noon/1 or figure out your personal cut off time. Caffeine's half life is 6 hours so the earlier the cut off the better
4. Stop eating 4 hours before your bedtime and limit liquids too
5. Try to do relaxing activities 2 hours before bed. Limit tv and other stimulating media, turn your lights lower. Don't exercise in the evening
6. Make sure your bedroom is dark. I wear an eye mask to limit all other lights from electronics

Getting good sleep makes all the difference between sitting on my ass all day and getting shit done. Yeah, getting old sucks but exercise is the best thing to counteract it. Also, the financial freedom doesn't suck

Got Covid after helping with a memorial scholarship fundraiser for my friend who died of cancer last Dec (discussed a few pages back).

We were all careful. I wore masks around everyone except those who tested negative prior, and all of the small group were vaxxed.

Except one misled folks as to timing of the negative test, and between it and meeting us a few days later came in contact with it, then didn’t think to retest before joining us.

Maybe we get it anyways due to timing.

But it has really sucked for my business momentum. I’ve had to change a lot of plans, and try to close some things over phone instead of in person and it’s led to multiple frustrations from emails ending up in spam folders and dropped calls and misheard amounts and time frames.

But more, I almost gave it to my family on Father’s Day as I wasn’t told about the danger until Sunday Morning after the Thursday/Friday exposure and her “suspecting” Friday night.

Thankfully I found out in time to cancel Father’s Day steak cookout and swimming at my place mere days before my Dad headed up several presentations at a law convention.

Could have been a super-spreader.

Like, be open about this. Be honest, be timely.

Know a good plumber?

I have a leak in my main water line from the meter to the house. :x I dug it up and found it. It is just a small one relatively speaking.

Update:

So I go out this morning to clean up the area and pipe where it was leaking and I find… roughly 10 inches of flex hose clamped to the main line! Unbelievable

This has had to been leaking slowly forever.

Got stood up for a date with a girl I matched with on a dating app. I'm more disappointed than anything because we talked for a long time over the weekend and first girl in Arizona I've talked to who is passionate about things I am.

I hate trying to date and when actually putting yourself out there people just ghost you or don't communicate. I don't mind getting rejected or told I'm not thier cup of tea but the whole non communicating trend is just fucking annoying and disrespectful.

From here on my lawn, the thought of dating utterly bores and terrifies me. If my wife were to die I would be stranded: women my wife's age are physically unattractive, and when it comes to younger women, I wouldn't have the forbearance that love engenders.

My buddy is 36 like me and deep in the throes of online dating the last couple years. It sounds like hell. He's been on dozens of dates the last few years but they hardly ever turn into anything. It's all so crazy sounding. I met my wife right when tinder started so just narrowly avoided the current wave of meeting people that started in the mid 2010s. And I'm incredibly thankful to not have to be a part of it.

Dating has always sucked, but can't even imagine how hard it would be after college since the majority of people you would know would be married, and the pool of available prospects gets pretty thin.

I was just thinking a day or two ago that if my wife died, I would probably never date. Not that I even know any single women I would want to date that would want to date me.

True Story.....

Buddy of mine had been single a long time and was getting pretty down about it. Our friend group eventually convinced him to get on Tinder to get laid. He reluctantly agreed. After a bit, he finally met up with someone from Tinder. This was his first and only meet up from Tinder.

6 months later they got married.

We constantly roast him for not using Tinder correctly!

Been married myself since 1985 to my college sweetheart.

Can you imagine if some visionary was talking about something like Tinder back then and how nuts we would have thought they were?

Just in my 4 years at the UA, we went from punched cards for programming, to dumb terminals, and finally in the Science Library they had PCs with 2 floppy drives.

The actual dumb terminals we did our programming on:

As bad as it seems in my imagination, my typical conjured nightmare scenarios are still couched in predictably boring Boomer settings. I can't tolerate the hellscape notion of a mixer for retired menopausal divorcees and retired burned out wage slave refugees. If you can sense the hell of that, imagine what a club scene would be like! Uuuuugh!

Lando, you are a warrior, epic on the field of ardor!

I'm right where Lando and your buddy are. Same age, back and forth online dating for quite a while.

There's so much that can be said about how miserable today's dating scene is and how many worthwhile individuals it leaves behind, but in short, it's a bummer to have so much going for myself in just about anything I invest myself in, yet be so completely helpless when it comes to this one area.

Going back to the beginning of 2021, I was pretty thrilled by two women I met over two separate dating spans. But both ended up letting me go with polite reasons that didn't add up. Both couldn't find anything wrong with me, both appreciated my intellect and being easy to talk to, yet both went off in their own heads and convinced themselves I wasn't worth it.

I used to think finding somebody was all about determinism but with so many of my hitched peers spouting the exact same formula - "I just got lucky, I just got lucky, I would've stayed single if we hadn't met" - dating is more about fatalism.

For like a certain type of guy and some of my friends this is true. But for for most guys not true.

Couldn't agree more. I feel like timing is the unfortunate variable that no one can control. When I was younger and not ready for a real relationship I dated an amazing girl. That was a girl I could have married but I wasn't ready.

I hate how you can really connect and vibe. Then like you said they don't give a reason that makes sense or they just completely ghost you without any communication at all. Hard to learn from those situations imo, but I'm trying.

Met my future wife at The Wildcat House, just about right across the street.

Used to walk between those two, and The Outlaw all the time.

Maybe for some guys but definitely not for me lol. Tinder was utterly useless. I used it off and on for about 8 years and I got I think 3 dates out of it. I met my fiance on Facebook dating of all places (excuse me while I throw up). But thankfully she's great!
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.

i'll just go with fuck asu.

I graduated in 85. Logged alot of time between these three but really only got lucky once. She want much to brag about, but drug her home from the Outlaw. You guys did better than me.

White Wednesdays were a favorite and so were the Wildcat cheeseburgers on Fridays.

Had a buddy that was a bouncer at the Outlaw and used to March us straight from the front door to the barber chair to have free margaritas mixed in our mouths.

Damn. Good times.

That's actually when I met my future wife! Since back then it was so crowded you had to share the picnic table.

Think the huge burger and fries were $1.99.

Speaking of The Wildcat House, it was actually a chain of two, where the other one (The Grad) was in San Luis Obispo which is the town I ended up working at until I retired. Saw a bartender there one time with a Wildcat House polo on. Said he moved out from Tucson. SLO is a college town, Cal Poly, so a big college bar. Although the drinking age is 21 now, which was 19 when we were in college.

College bars back in the 1980s weren't that close to campus like they are now. Chances was on Tanque Verde. Cowboys was on 22nd and Wilmot.

The Grad. Same picnic tables. The Grad lasted longer, think it closed about 4 years ago.

Burger Madness at Bum Steer was just as good if not better. Think it was Thursdays and Sundays.

White Wednesday was at Bum Steer. (Maybe WH did it too)
