Re: The Good News Thread
Daytime Game 7. We're looking at houses and planning to stay at a hotel in PHX when done. One by one the elements start to suck: disappointing overall amenities; prices beyond stoopid; hotter than fucking fuck; mediocre food at the key anchor restaurant. And then they bugger the bill and over charge for wine. I'm reckoning with morons and my wife is about to lose it. The vortex whirls and gravity begins to collapse. I look at her and I know with absolute certainty that the next thing out of her mouth will be my fate, an unassailable universe unto itself accepting no alternate reality. And she says: Fuck this place, I just need to go watch basketball.
And I am saved.
And I am saved.

I disagree that is good news.
She not only underachieved at the Olympics but she ditched her team to boot.

Re: The Good News Thread
I would doubt anyone on her gymnastics team feels like she ditched them
Re: The Good News Thread
My daughter was a gymnasts as a kid. Craziest sport I have ever seen. She had a teammate, age 7 who went to the Karoli camp and tore her acl so she had acl surgery repair. At age 7, just crazy. All the older girls had had multiple surgeries by the time they hit high school age. I remember right before her 1st meet. Her coach comments to us that this is when they lose their innocence because now they will be judged on everything they do. Most of the girls dropped out their 1st or 2nd year. Gymnastics is amazing but I wouldn't wish it on anyone. It's just not a healthy sport at all. My daughter switched to dance which was much more chill and healthy although it has it's own weirdness too. And dance as a career is pretty freaking tough.

Biles is the GOAT. I have never seen anyone do the things she does.
If you don't think it's important to not do difficult routines if you lack confidence, just look up Elena Mukhina.
From balance beam to wheelchair becoming a quadriplegic.

I didn't mean to come off cold but there are certain pressures and expectations when you are the top dog. Comes with the territory and the great ones figure out how to cope with it when the spotlight is on them, others can't and underperform to the level that everyone expects.UAEebs86 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 11:04 amReally ECC? I feel for her and applaud the fact she recognized her problem and got some help. I also recognize she's had an amazing career and ranks arguably as one of the greatest gymnast's of all time. Just not sure why that puts her on top of the pantheon of greats - given what happened to her - which I assume is the criteria for that particular box selection.
Over the last 100 years would she be your pick as the most iconic sports figure?

Elephant kills old woman, then returns to trample her corpse at the funeral
It's no secret that elephants are among the most expressive and emotional animals on the planet, with there being plenty of evidence of these creatures exhibiting happiness, sadness, anger, compassion, and love, even.
But what about murderous intent and vengeance?
As it turns out, one particular elephant in India was capable of all that and more, when it killed a 70-year-old woman and then went back for seconds during her funeral.
On June 10, 2022, the woman named Maya Murmu, who hailed from Raipal village in the district of Odisha Mayurbhanj, was brutally attacked by an elephant in a nearby forest while collecting water.
According to news reports, she was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead very quickly after.
After bringing her body home, her family proceeded to make the necessary arrangements for her funeral, but it was all for nought as on the day of her funeral, the very same elephant returned to the village in an extremely foul mood.
......
While the exact reason for the elephant's vengeful behavior remains unknown, some have speculated that the woman may have done something in the past to offend the beast, and that it managed to retain the thought in its head until the opportunity arose for it to seek revenge.
This is also quite probably considering that elephants have extremely long memories, and are known to exact vengeance on humans or other animals that have caused them hurt, most notably poachers.
Some scientists have even noted that wild elephants may even grow to learn about these behaviors from perpetrators and begin hating them. So it's safe to say, that you really should play nice with elephants if you ever encounter them in the wild.

I've been banned on Disqus. I don't know why I do it. It's not like I can't be an asshole here. Maybe I'm like Raylan Givens stealing gas from a pedophile.

Loved that show, but I haven't had cable or satellite in many years. Since so many people have cut the cord, I was wondering how people were going to watch it. So this is good news:dovecanyoncat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2024 4:27 pm Jon Stewart to return to ‘The Daily Show’ as a host and executive producer

The poaching of Stewart is also a win for Paramount Global, which has been trying to breathe life into its Paramount+ streaming service. Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, which is responsible for much of the streamer’s content library, said episodes with Stewart will be available on the platform the day after they air on Comedy Central.

So glad he's back. I think he might have regretted not being on the air during the 2016 election. We could have used his voice.

I recall reading that millennials received most of their knowledge of the news from Jon Stewart instead of MSM, making them much more informed than they would have been otherwise.
Contrast to watching...

^^^^ According to a new study by Farleigh Dickinson University, Fox viewers are the least knowledgeable audience of any outlet, and they know even less about politics and current events than people who watch no news at all.

The Northwest Physicians hospital on S. Houghton did a great job on my hernia repair. It's the cleanest most over-staffed and thorough hospital I been in all of the Tucson metro area. Laparoscopic is waaaay better than open repair. Didn't need any of the opioids they gave me. Anybody need a hit?
