There must be something psychologically deep-rooted about having your sense of self-worship validated by fame, namely the ludicrous admiration from the public (fleeting as it is, Vanilla Ice), that risks blinding the celebrity to the worst of their own terrible natures, even as their harmful actions have become tangibly more consequential since the advent of #MeToo.

“I will literally disappear from public life.”

A wise move more celebs should follow.

Instead, addicted to their fame and fame’s potent validation of self-worship, we watch too many celebs obliviously turning their irrelevance into the sad spectacle of a public has-been.

A guy whose temper could give him a continual presence throughout this thread - Alec Baldwin loses his cool with protestors the other night.

Walking to volunteer as an instructor at an acting class, Baldwin wandered on into a crowd of anti-Israel protestors shouting "ceasefire!" Recognizing him, they belittled his tanking career. The NYPD stepped in and escorted Baldwin into the theater he was scheduled to teach in.

No truth to the rumors that Baldwin was guest teaching on the subject of prop gun safety.

Was reading up on Masterson's conviction yesterday and, though I knew he was a Scientologist, I had no idea his church was so aggressively involved in protecting Masterson against the consequences of the clear and obvious harm he caused unfortunate women.

Lot of backchannel chatter on this. YouTubers who closely followed Masterson's trial and now imprisonment are saying that even though Masterson was pre-scheduled to be transferred due to mounting safety reasons, three prison gang members attacked Masterson as guards were removing him from his cell. In the weeks leading up to Masterson's weekend transfer, numerous guards were required to escort him to his meals to not only protect him from the known hits out on him but to ensure he was being fed after Masterson refused to leave his cell week after week. It's a point of pride and bragging rights amongst inmates to be the one who pulls off a beatdown on a higher profile inmate.

So this former child actor is publishing a tell-all this week. Her upbringing in Hollywood sounds miserable. Exploited by her mother (hence the title of her memoir) and sexually harassed as a minor by producers on the set of her Nickelodeon shows. In her book she doesn't shy away from raging against the fame she came into:

A new documentary, Quiet On Set, is cataloguing long-term abuses faced by child stars on Nickelodeon's live action shows.

Much of it centers around Nickelodeon's lead producer at the time, Dan Schneider. Not only his psychological abuses but his looking the other when predators assaulted the child actors of his shows, such voice coach Brian Peck's abuse of Drake Bell. Brian Peck is now a sex offender currently serving prison time after pleading guilty in 2004 to sexually assaulted two separate minors.

"According to several actors and others who spoke in Quiet on Set and who worked during his lengthy time with Nickelodeon, Schneider’s major temper issues could lead him to explode on sets “like a tornado.” He was also allegedly inappropriate to young females who worked for him, leaving pornography on his computer screen and according to one account, telling a writer under the guise of a joke that he’d put one of her sketches in the show in return for a massage."

Started watching it since my kids grew up on All That and The Amanda Show. But in truth, I thought it was going to be worse that it was. Dude was a total asshole for sure though.

Lots of sexual innuendoes too which were mentioned, but was hoping to hear more from the stars such as Bynes, Keenan and Kel. Just minor characters on the first episode.

The Beatles never lip synced unless it was one of their videos they made lots of videos. They weren't thought of as "videos" back in the '60s ...

One thing you should know is that Ed Sullivan ran a live show. He had a great Orchestra and Orchestra conductor. It didn't matter if you were from a Broadway show, an opera singer, a legitimate popular singer like Barbra Streisand or a rock and roll group like the Dave Clark Five:

Everybody sang with the orchestra or with a group. Performances were live there was no lip-synching on The Ed Sullivan Show; it was a class Prime Time show.

Shows like Dick Clark's American Bandstand which were not primetime more often liked lip-syncing. Variety shows that were on Primetime had a choice, but the upscale ones had live performances.

Ed Sullivan demanded that everyone do a run-through live and if their song was too long the orchestra or the individual musicians had to cut it.

It is well known that he would ask questionable rock groups to change their lyrics Just for his show because it was a family show.

The Stones changed their lyrics but the Doors agreed to do it and didn't. So Jim Morrison and The Doors were banned from the show.

Sullivan didn't invite performers to his Live program who could not produce a live performance.

But he would allow performers to videotape a live performance from another country or venue when they couldn't come to the show in person. The Beatles and the Dave Clark Five did that a number of times.

Also yes. Bandstand was a RADIO SHOW on TV - they played records even when the artist was in the studio. They were selling records and the recorded performance was being advertised. There are probably exceptions to the rule, but they are few and far between.
