Re: The Weather is Crazy
The gulf has a current water temperature of 86 degrees. Anything 81 or over causes the wind speed to increase.
Thank goodness for the pacific ocean being in the 50s and 60s.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
Hurricane Helene is now upgraded to a Cat 4 hurricane, and it isn't close to shore yet. Sustained winds of 130 mph. Another thing happening is extreme flash flooding, especially in North Carolina. Expect Atlanta to have sever flooding. The hurricane isn't expected to weaken before landfall. More likely it will intensify.

The idea that we really need to see reporters getting pummeled live by 100 mph winds remains totally asinine. Someone is going to die.

Apparently Asheville, NC, of all places, is about to get completely ruined by flooding. We just got back from there 3 days ago. Such an amazing place.

This is a really cool little mountain town. Never thought I would see it destroyed by a Hurricane.

This bitch is supposed to drop an inch plus of rain and 40 mph winds on us overnight.
I live about 1300 miles from where it made landfall.

Well when Project 2025 is instituted the NOAA and government-funded weather maps will be outlawed because they make Dear Leader feel inadequate, so that will combat the fake news of 30-foot storm surges.

Heather Cox Richardson bringing the receipts today
NOAA hurricane scientist Jeff Masters noted that Helene’s landfall “gives the U.S. a record eight Cat 4 or Cat 5 Atlantic hurricane landfalls in the past eight years (2017–2024), seven of them being continental U.S. landfalls. That’s as many Cat 4 and 5 landfalls as occurred in the prior 57 years.”
President Joe Biden approved emergency declarations for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina before Helene made landfall. Tennessee governor Bill Lee, a Republican, did not ask for such a declaration until this evening, instead proclaiming September 27 a “voluntary Day of Prayer and Fasting.” Observers pointed out that with people stuck on a hospital roof in the midst of catastrophic flooding in his state, maybe an emergency declaration would be more on point.
The federal government sent 1,500 federal personnel to the region, as well as about 8,000 members of the U.S. Coast Guard and teams from the Army Corps of Engineers to provide emergency power. It provided two health and medical task forces to help local hospitals and critical care facilities, and sent in more than 2.7 million meals, 1.6 million liters of water, 50,000 tarps, 10,000 cots, 20,000 blankets, 70,000 gallons of diesel fuel, and 40,000 gallons of gasoline to provide supplies for those hit by the catastrophe.

What is being said about Asheville on twitter is disgusting. Asheville is a very pro-gay town. I was just at my cousins wedding last weekend in Asheville where she married her partner. Half our family refused to attend.

As the mobsters say: Whadduya gonna do? We're on the south side now and it's 117. We flew to PDX to buy a new Rav4 Prime and drive it back .... gotta say, after a week on the road the heat here in the desert SW is one thing, but with climate change, the sun in the Pacific NW and the Inland NW (Boise) feels fucking brutal. I spent my entire life outdoors .... this is not the same world.

Truth be told, the Indian Summer in Boise was everything I cherish from a long past in the woods. Once we got on the dirt and up to Swanholm Summit between the Middle Fork and North Fork it fucking glorious.
High point of the trip: stealing 84cat's model Y while he was out. That 2 hour joyride was killer! Great car!

Re: The Weather is Crazy
I can not tell you the absolutely strange/surreal feeling it is to visit a place, fall in love with it, and then see it absolutely leveled 3 days later. We went to Asheville last weekend but also took the 40 into Pigeon Forge Tennessee. We stopped in Boone, Chimney Rock, etc. We shopped at the River Arts district in Asheville. All of it is completely gone now, including the 40. So weird.
This feels similar to when we went to Maui last year and it was completely gone via fire a week later.
My in-laws have asked us to go visit Mar A lago next. (a little humor in the middle of tragedy).
But for real, what I'm hearing about western NC is downright absolutely terrifying of huge numbers of people trapped with no communication, no power, and no food. I grew up in NC but haven't truly appreciated Asheville until the past 2-3 years. Such an awesome charming little town. I know the media is going to move on shortly but from what I'm hearing this is unprecedented disaster the likes have rarely been seen in this country.

We were in SLO/Pismo Beach/Avila Beach a couple of weeks ago and the weather was glorious. We went for a bike ride one afternoon and it was a little hot so we stopped and had some drinks
Actually the smoke is more of a problem than the heat. At least it cools down at night. Going to be 90 here today which is 15 degrees above average. Going to be in the 70s the next 10 daysdovecanyoncat wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 1:22 pm It's a buck 16 in PHX right now

Hopefully you had a clam chowder bread bowl at the Splash Cafe. Still our favorite lunch spot in Pismo, although I heard Brad's is now better.
Great time to go. During the summer, we never go to Pismo or Avila, just so crowded.
We were in Santa Barbara a week ago. Plenty of free beachfront parking by Stearns Wharf, and the beaches were empty.
Drove up from Santa Monica on Thursday after my son's surgery, and the GPS had us take the 1 instead of the 405/101 since we didn't get out until 4pm or so.
40 miles of empty beaches at 75 degrees. It was beautiful.

I feel you. We’ve watched some of our favorite dots on the map get absolutely devastated recently. Maui, Gatlinburg, Sanibel Island & Siesta Key to name a few. It’s heartbreaking to see the places you and your kids had the times of their lives washed or burned away.

Looking like the 110 temps in Phoenix will last through the first week of October. Just unreal.
Re: The Weather is Crazy
The first text I got from my family in Western, NC. It came in Green because there is very little service.
It read, "No power, no water, no food, trying to find a road out still. Beyond devastation as far as we can see. We are okay. The Pets are okay. We are trying to get to Winston Salem. The situation is getting worse. They say a dam upstream from Asheville is about to break."
