I am taking my talents to Sacramento.

Sac is ok, but the group I am joining is great. Really excited for the opportunities and work ahead, and close enough to SF and Tahoe to make heading there on a whim a reality.

So happy how this all played out and really glad to having this behind me.

It's never easy. Position has hit a delay, but it could mean better actual position with better security and more money. All good things, except all this opens up the pool more. :/ but I'm still hearing good things. Just now likely to face more/more qualified competition.

Ok, so update:

On Monday I heard the provost unknowingly fucked over my lecturer line, turning it into a professor of practice, therefore minimizing my educational experience and qualifications in favor of non-academic practical application. I'd still have qualified, but without requirements of university teaching or minimum Masters Degree, I'd have been just another applicant instead of the applicant atop it all.

So, the delay.

Job posted yesterday.

My colleagues fought for me. It's back to a Lecturer line, it's criteria basically a mirror of my résumé. Feels good to not just be wanted, but also fought for.

All goes well, I'll apply after the New Year, and the opening closes on the 31st of January. So, hopefully by February I'll know about the next round.

Why I Own The World...

Post by JMarkJohns »

...Because I took a 1-win, 3-loss Fantasy Football team my cousin quit on after a month, juggled the weekly waiver wire, selling high in several trades, buying low in many others, playing 11 different RBs, 8 WRs, 7 Defenses, 5 Kickers, 3 TEs (I know, I know, and a partridge in a pear tree) depending on their weekly matchup en route to an 8-6 final playoff birth, knocking off the 12-2 league juggernaut by 42 points last week and the 10-4, second-best team by 39 points this week to take the Title.

I played just three players double-digit times, and my final roster included waiver wire pickups like J.Bell (week 7), O.Beckham (week 6), CJ.Anderson (week 10). Those three plus Lacey carried me the final five weeks. Previous waiver pickups included RBs Asiata, J.Hill, R.Hillman, L.Blount and WRs Mike Evans, Denard Robinson. Of the 30 name players who played a game for me, 11 ended up on IR or out these final few weeks.

Despite barely making the playoffs at 8-6, my team was 2nd in the League in points per week, losing the handful of games because I played like 6 QBs in their season's best weeks and multiple RBs who broke 25 points in a week. Good luck was not on my side. Until the last few weeks when I played Rodgers (last week) and Luck (this week) in the playoffs! 8-)

In the end, only 2 players remained from my cousin's shitty draft.

Just bought a entire dozen of eggs that I intend to go through by myself between now and Fat Tuesday. Then Lent starts and it's all beans from then on out. It's a religious conviction. And when I say "religious" I mean it in a full culinary sense. None of this "belief" stuff. For the next several weeks, I'll be sustained by my anticipation of that eggs benedict for breakfast, and then that lamb neck that I intend to braise for 12 hours and serve over a platter of black-eyed peas.

It's exciting. & congrats to your boy!

I'm not sure she's going to attend UofA yet - she's been accepted to Nevada Reno & UofA as of now & is also waiting to hear back from USC, CU Boulder & Whittier. Obviously I'm hoping she chooses a PAC school & Arizona above all others but as of now I'm just proud as hell & thankful she's going to have some options.

I cannot believe how expensive college is these days. I was going through old stuff this weekend and found a letter of intent when I played JUCO ball. It laid out the full ride and the dollar amount of what it covered: Was under $5,000 for a full year, tuition, dorm, meal plan, books. And I remember my first year at the U of A, I think tuition was around $2,000 a semester. This was the early 2000s. Now it is almost $6,000 a semester I believe.

When I was a freshman 11 years ago tuition was like $4500/year and the dorm was about $3000. Total cost with a meal plan and books was about $9000/year. Now it is over $20,000.

considering it will be at least 20-25 years before I have college aged kids...it'll probably cost 70k a year for in state residents.

Paid $880 or something like that for out-of-state tuition. In-state was a $1.90 or something. :)

We bitched about it then. It is insane now. Precludes out-of-state for us. Pell Grants -- I had one -- went further back then, too.

Budget cuts. Current ones have funding down to mid-90s totals, with inflation factored in, it's late 80s.

I stayed home for games on Thursday. Let my son do that Friday. When I walk in after work, I see him in a Husky shirt.

He got the letter and headed straight to the mall. Guess that's his choice. Very proud. I was worried he'd get wait-listed and Romared.

Colleges here have been abandoned, too. Used to be state paid 70, students paid 30 (on average ). Now it's 30-70 because spending has gone elsewhere. Son wants to major in aerospace engineering. Not many schools offer that. Fortunate to be in same state as Boeing.

Education is still an investment worth doing.

A person with a degree will earn an average of one million dollars in his or her lifetime more than a person who doesn't earn a degree.

That's worth the extra tutition.

God, I hate this excuse. So tuition used to be too low? Never too high?

It's like listening to rich people who call the public schools "bargains." It's an investment worth doing for the good of the country, not just individuals. And the debt incurred is detrimental to individuals and the economy. Plus, it closes access to education on the front end.

Outstanding.

We await the financial aid letter. If it's similar to Wazzu's -- and he gets a STEM scholarship -- he should be able to get through with no loans. Seattle U offered $30k a year in schollies/grants/work study. Still left $15k, or $3k to $4k a year higher than UW (I think).

If he wanted to go that route, I would support it. I was very impressed with the small-school atmosphere. But can't blame him for seeking an experience that includes football Saturdays and the rest of the Pac-12 perks.

Liberalism is rampant up there, that is the only downside. I think the area and the university community could benefit from a strong conservative intellectual like myself.
