Re: If you had to pick ONE restaurant in Tucson
Haven't confirmed but I read Frankie's Cheesesteaks is closing Jan 1. Didn't know there was a 2nd location on Ina either. I wonder if he's relocating or just keeping the new spot
Re: If you had to pick ONE restaurant in Tucson
It better not be closing, it's one of my favorite places in town
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.
i'll just go with fuck asu.

Oh damn. I live literally 2 mins from the Thornydale and Ina one. One of my only go to takeout places on this side of town.

I think it’s a lease issue with the Campbell location.

Frankie's is now closed on Campbell, snuck in my last visit before the new year.
And Tino's on Tanque Verde is closing in early February. RIP Sonoran Dog pizza.

The problem with Frankie's is that their bread is authentic Amaroso rolls from Philadelphia. They're great in Philadelphia, but they're stale in Tucson.

Amaroso rolls has to have a baker in PHX or LA.
Not in Tucson but in Phoenix
Cocina Madrigal here in Phoenix tops Yelp's top 100 restaurants list.

This place is fantastic, however the word is out and now you can't get in the place.

Looks like Pizza Luna is set to re-open in March. They had to close because most of their employees refused to get vaccinated, while the owners insisted they wouldn't contribute to spreading the virus and hospitalizations. I guess they're training a new batch of vaccinated hires.

I keep meaning to. Have they stayed open? I'm not proud to say I didn't notice them for ages, and I'd actually walk straight past and buy bagels and cream at Trader Joe's.Alieberman wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 12:43 pmHave you been to their bagel shop next door- Bubbe's?Longhorned wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 12:38 pm Looks like Pizza Luna is set to re-open in March. Yesterday I finally made it to Rollie's in South Tucson for lunch.
The top pic shows a birria taco, which was so amazing that I ate it before I could take a pic.
The next two in order are carne asada and birria enchiladas.
Everybody there was so excited. It's a great experience.

Has anyone been to Ceres downtown? It was featured in Arizona Highways and I grabbed some coffee there after visiting LaCo. Their menu looks pretty damn good for a tiny little spot.

Ceres is a national treasure. As you know, it's like walking into Rome in the 1930s. Re: If you had to pick ONE restaurant in Tucson
I just picked up Bubbe's for lunch. So good. They use and also sell the Cambridge House salmon from Santa Barbara. I read about it over a year ago and was tempted to pay shipping fees to try it. So, probably the best salmon on the best bagel I've ever had. I also love whitefish, which is next.Alieberman wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 12:43 pmHave you been to their bagel shop next door- Bubbe's?Longhorned wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 12:38 pm Looks like Pizza Luna is set to re-open in March. I haven't had a decent pizza at Transplant since the first time when they opened. They've quickly fallen beneath Blackjack. I wonder if they lost their pizza makers in the same way Luna did, except instead of closing, they tried to power through with new workers who don't know what they're doing.

I’m glad to see you post this. I insisted to my family that Longhorned knows good food and he really liked it… but they all looked at me strangely
I was embarrassed to post here that we weren’t digging it

Well you can tell them Longhorned don't dig it either. It's supposed to be buttery, caramelized, and airy. Instead it's dense, heavy, and blunt. And then the toppings are mediocre on top of that. Not delicious.Alieberman wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 1:39 pmI’m glad to see you post this. If you make it back to the old neighborhood at Tatum and Shea, the Detroit style pizza done right is Jet's.

Re: If you had to pick ONE restaurant in Tucson
They have had a lot of turnover but I havent had their pizza since they came out with the sandwiches. The Italian is killerLonghorned wrote: ↑Fri Feb 18, 2022 7:20 pmI haven't had a decent pizza at Transplant since the first time when they opened. They've quickly fallen beneath Blackjack. Their other concept Toro Loco is about to re-open in the original Grillers location past Craycroft.

Re: If you had to pick ONE restaurant in Tucson
I agree with you on the Italian. But it's a messy sandwich (which I love in itself) and they just wrap them loosely in foil and hand them to me. As I came to a stop on the way home, one of them slid out of its foil and all over the floor. After cleaning up the mess, I had share the surviving one with my wife, which made me sad.Jefe wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 4:06 pmThey have had a lot of turnover but I havent had their pizza since they came out with the sandwiches. On Earth, sandwich makers wrap them in paper and tape them.

Oh yeah, a hand shower is a must after that. That mayo/italian dressing combo is a match made in Heaven with their bread. I would never think to leave the building with that disaster waiting to happen, as you found out

We went to Saguaro Corners tonight. A place open since 1958 in that amazing location with that unbelievable neon sign would totally be expected to forget about food quality. But they're serious about serving damn good food on top of everything. Just became one of my favorites.SabinoDrifter wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 10:38 am Saguaro Corners always hits the spot when I want some fresh beers and their wings. Damn those things are tasty.

It hasn't been open continuously since 1958. The original family closed it down probably close to 10 years ago, and then a new owner bought it, renovated it (including adding the patio), and reopened.

Re: If you had to pick ONE restaurant in Tucson
We were stuck at La Encantada with our kid and decided, screw it, let's just just eat at Blanco. It's a Mexican restaurant owned by the Fox group. And its name is hilariously appropriate, and apparently not in a self-aware way. So bad. Yet so popular.
The gringo thing I'm over most is sweet corn. It's in everything, especially at Blanco. Gringos have even ruined elote.
I also got stuck at a work event at Flora's. They put sweet corn in the carbonara.

Love me some more Korean! Right next to Kogi though which has been very busy the last few weeks.
Toro Loco reopened last week on Speedway at the original Serial Grillers spot and they have a new menu. One item I saw was Barbaco Ramen with a really dark broth. They will also have one of the best murals in Tucson

Re: If you had to pick ONE restaurant in Tucson
We tried the new Midtown Vegan Deli on 5th St. and Rosemont.
The sweet potato fries and tater tots were great, but that's easy.
I had a Big Mac inspired Beyond Burger with pickles, sauce, lettuce, fake cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame seed bun. It was really good.
My wife had a "chicken" Philly cheesesteak. She said it was really good and reminder her of vegan cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, which I've never tried. It looked like something you'd get at Chicago Diner, so I believe her. But instead of seitan, it was made with "soy curd" (?).
My kid's fake turkey and fake cheese with fake mayo was awful. It had that dog kibble taste you get with vegan "meats". Inedible.
I was surprised they don't make their own seitan like Chicago Diner. What's the point in vegan deli if they don't make vegan meats? I love how Chicago diner dyes their seitan red with beat juice to look like corned beef.
It's a great corner place to pick up good Italian pasta and stuff like that, but they close at 6 pm.
Overall, there's some good. Better than it was when it was a former Jewish deli that sat there closed since forever ago.

Chicago Diner is so good. It's actually vegetarian, not vegan. They made me believe that I love seitan. As I've since learned, I hate seitan, but I love Chicago Diner's seitan. I'm hoping to find somebody who makes it like they do.

When you wander back here you’ll have to take* me.
(*kidnap/drug me, and then when I wake up at Chicago Diner show me a video of my family being held hostage and tell me they will be released unharmed if I take two bites of whatever the fuck seitan is)
