So, this happened yesterday. My wife had to work yesterday. She is a sales manager for Dillard's and she was in the store at Desert Sky Pavilion. I had finished up my honey do list and decided to go see Hobbs and Shaw (which I still say Calvin and Hobbs a lot but that's another story). About half way through the movie my phone rings. I decide I wasn't going to be 'that' guy and ignore it. Shortly after I received a series of texts and ignore those as well. After the movie I look at my phone and see these:

Text 1 1:15 PM) "Hey I'm OK. Possible active shooter situation."

Text 2 1:27 PM) "Hi I'm OK. Possible active shooter at mall. We are in lock down."

Text 3 1:39 PM) "It was an armed robbery at jewelry store. Shoots fired no one hurt. Phx PD onsite. Mall evacuated. Waiting to clear."

Text 4 2:20 PM) "We are open again. Some on yelled gun and hysteria followed. No gun even involved. A smashed jewelry caseline only at that jewelry store. Luv you."

This is why I don't even open mail anymore. Things take care of themselves.

A sad testament to present-day life in America, but also a resolution to go in the good news thread. Glad she's OK.

Of course as I was about to send a post on this site on another thread.

Anybody else excited to see somebody else’s name as the latest post in a forum after your name has been on the board index for awhile? Not because you really want to see a response or another interesting post . . .but you’re just happy to see that whatever ill-thought post you’ve made is no longer sitting there exposed like a well-placed dog shit in the middle of the living room. Like somebody at least had the good graces to drag the rug over and cover the steaming turd. :?

Or is that just me?

So, there's been this empty lot near my house at the corner of Cactus and 43rd ave. It's been empty for as long as I've lived here (23+ years). Recently they started building these two story houses. I noticed that they were building them right next to each other and they were taking up what must be 90% of the lot. Not long ago a sign went up saying "Rent your new home." They're building these to rent. Seems a bit weird to me. I guess they are trying to appeal to the people who want something bigger than a typical apartment but for some reason they can't or don't want to own.

Looks like the rent is from $1,675 -to $1,750 and they are between 1298-1378 sq ft.

Selling them to Chinese investors to sit empty and used so they can store their wealth outside of markets. Most likely.

Those are revivals of early 20th century two-story four-square houses, like you see in Chicago. Or in the suburbs, where they'd have lots. That probably means the development has no local foothold, and that they're being placed all around the country. A kind of trans-urban tract housing. There's something disturbing about it.

Cheaper to buy I imagine than rent.

Townhouses trying to fake you out to make it look like a house.

Not that there's anything wrong with being a townhouse. But if you're a townhouse, be a townhouse. Don't try to be a house.

And that might well be what makes it look weird. Trying to be a house.

Their continued existence in West LA, Santa Monica, Brentwood, etc. are the ultimate proof that the LA housing market is irreconcilably distorted by government policy.
My building is the absolute low point of late 90's "contemporary" architecture and badly needs to be repainted but at least it won't fall down in an earthquake.

Somebody yesterday gave me those eyes and that hand on my arm as he lowered his voice in reference to the fact that my wife makes more money than I do.

Is this supposed to be a sore spot for me? A source of shame? Have I abandoned my responsibilities?

I would love it. My wife made about 1/10 of what I make. When she had some health issues, we just had her quit. What's the point when she's being taxed at my rate and effectively taking home almost nothing?

This, I never get this. My wife and I make almost the same thing, her slightly more. She could make 3 times what I do and I would only be happy with that. I can't understand why that should be something to be worried about as a man.

One of the biggest repeated mistakes in world history overlooking cookies. It's what people at get-togethers actually want to eat. Nobody wants to show up at a potluck, and see how the dessert people brought cake or pie or brownies, which wilt in the heat of Tucson while everyone awkwardly tries to cut and and serve them with the wrong implements, and pretend how those flies on the frosting or fruit filling or melty chocolate don't matter.

Don't bring desserts just because you like them at home. Don't even bake anything yourself. Just stop at a damn bakery pick up some cookies.
