I thought I'd post a positive thing. We lost one cat last year, and our girl turned 17 this February. In April, she had a kidney episode and her creatinine was at a fatal level at the emergency vet.
We hospitalized her for 3 days. It was hard leaving her for IV treatment. We saw her one hour a day for visiting hours until we could take her home.
She appears to be fairly stable. Her creatinine dropped from 7.6 to below 4 and has been right around 4 since. We have had at least 8 more months with her and I'm happy for every day.
She was my wife's before I entered the picture. She has always been a little scared of my face (common with women) but lately she's been more affectionate than ever. She sleeps lengthwise between my wife and I.
So, my thoughts are with all the good, loving pet owners in here. The time with our pets we have are special.
That’s a bummer Spiff. But glad you have more time. My guys are young (5 years old) but one was assessed as borderline on the creatinine when he had to have a tooth removed. Went back a few months later and his values went down just into the acceptable range. I’ll have him tested again in January before I leave for Dubai. I don’t know what the implications are, but I’m hoping his values go down even further so he’s not borderline anymore.

It's one reason this thread connects with me. It's people who obviously care about cherishing their time.
The girlfriend lost her nearly 16 year old chocolate lab about a month ago. We are still devastated by how fast it happened but she had a very long life and made a huge impact on us. We had to take her to the 24 hour Vet hospital at midnight April 15th and they would not let us in due to covid. Mocha made it through the night but they said it was time. Im so glad they let her in to spend a couple hours together the next day. La Canada and River Vet was incredible throughout the whole process.
She is now headed to CA to pickup a 7 week old red toy poodle. On we go!

Appreciate it. She was an awesome dog and could still jump up on the couch at 15 years 10 months. Got a little territorial but who doesn't at that age.

I'm sorry, Jefe. There's something about the labradors that I get especially attached to. The way they go through all the life stages seems more apparent, since they're so active and rough when young, and the grow to become so chill. It all makes the time feel so marked.

My current pup, Rowdy, is turning 14 today. At times she’s still a puppy, running laps, hopping up on hind legs to greet you, but other times I can tell her breathing and walking is labored.
Gonna try and give her lots of love this next year. Made a meatloaf Thursday. She’s already had some cut up bites from it twice. She likes hers with a side of boiled carrots diced up or green beans.
Also, I hate seeing this thread bumped. Because I know one day it will be my turn.

Nobody needs to apologize for posting in this thread. My heart also sinks every time I see it, but it is an important part of group therapy. It might not be a bad idea that this is simply a celebration thread, regardless. Might temper the auto-feels.
I'm considering adopting from a greyhound rescue. I've always found them strange looking dogs, but based on what I'm reading, they sound like they have a rare ability to tolerate a human typing on a computer all day long, or even getting left alone when I have to go to meetings or teach.
I just started interacting with dogs over the past week or so. They seem to be thinking about something else while you're with them, or distracted by everything. I have a lot to learn.
Just a heads up that Greyhounds can have a LOT of medical issues. Not to deter you, but wanted to let you know that I’ve had two friends adopt Greyhounds only to have them spend most of their short lives in and out of vet care.

What a cutie! The best dog I ever had came from the Maricopa Animal Control shelter in Mesa. Lived to the ripe old age of 15. Shelter dogs are the best.
I've been avoiding dogs my whole life because of allergies, and now that I'm finally interacting with dogs, I guess I just don't understand them and having trouble finding joy in them.
My in-laws are real dog people and they just adopted a rescue dog. The first time we brought our daughter over to meet the dog, the dog lunged at her face and tried to bite her. My in-laws explained that the dog was just trying to communicate, not actually bite. It didn't look like that to me. Then we went to their house for the autumn feast a couple of days ago, and the dog lunged at my kid and bit her face. She's got a bite mark on her face and she's kind of traumatized. So am I. I feel lucky she didn't get her eye.
Now it seems like I'm being the unreasonable one who doesn't want the dog near my kid anymore. I feel like my kid has only one face and two eyes, and I'm done with the whole thing. And yet the in-laws feel like the dog is a part of their family now.
Is the dog a puppy? Puppies nip and bite as play and it can be difficult to stop them from engaging in that behavior.
If the dog is older and aggressive, then that’s a whole different issue. And no, I wouldn’t let my kids be around it. Kids also tend to try to get their faces near animals’ faces, which is how my son got bitten (blood everywhere, it was horrific). So if your daughter tends to do that you may have to tell her sternly she can’t because many dogs find that to be an invasion of their space and they get defensive.

The dog is "probably a year and a half." She isn't very playful and spends most of the time growling at us and skittishly avoiding us when move or make a sound. They explained she's just shy and a little sweetheart. But when my kid gets near her, she attacks instead of veering away.
I don't know anything about dogs, which they remind about when I express my concerns. But to me, the fact that this was rescued from the streets of Nogales carries certain implications. I may not have much experience petting dogs, but I know the street dogs of Nogales.
Yeah, I’d steer clear of that dog. I don’t trust dogs that don’t trust humans.

Thanks. Good to know. Maybe the issue isn't that I don't know dogs. Maybe it's two family members who moved here from Boston a month ago and don't know what "streets of Nogales" means.
Someone had dropped off a 5 year old Choc Lab. He had been abandoned outside, not house broken, can’t be around kids, whatever.
He’s been the best dog. My sister thinks he was with an older lady who died and her kids kept him outside. She thinks he as trained as a companion dog because he walks so well on a leash.
Anyhoo our Pound Puppy has been an amazing family dog for the last 9 years. He’s fourteen now and getting old. But he’s had a hell of a good life with me and my kids.
