I braved the line at Blake's for lunch today. The green chile cheeseburger was really good. Not sure if it was worth waiting 20 minutes for at 1:00PM though.

Not fast food, but I had the best burger I can remember at a place called The Lodge Bar And Grill up in Pinetop this weekend. It's called the Mountains Original 50-50 Burger. Beef and bacon ground together and covered with your choice of cheese (I choose Havarti), and onions. Fantastic. We went back a few days later and I had the Black and Blue Sliders. Beef covered in blue cheese. Really good.

Wow. Between that and the Red Devil up there, my wife and I need to make a weekend of it in Pinetop for Memorial Day.

Dinner tonight:

Meatheads. The best fast food burger in the world. Though since it takes nearly 10 minutes to make your order, I'm unsure if it counts as fast food. It is a small chain, though.

Do they mean to call to mind Johnny Rocket's?

In Mesa there used to be a Blue Castle Burgers. They definitely meant to evoke White Castle. My first sliders. So bad, that they were my last, though a friend of mine argues I ate at White Castle in Chicago when I was blacked out.

What's wrong with freezing ground beef, though? I've never understood Wendy's on that. Makes even less sense than the supposed virtues of Burger King's "flame-broiling."

Boat burgers. Qualifies since they cook to order usually under 10 minutes. Any sport fishing boat from Los Angles down to San Diego. The well seasoned stove tops they cook from in the galley are archaic. Something about the salt air and smell coming out of the galleys as the burgers are cooking is amazing....not so much if you're seasick and about to chum.

Another epic bluefin tuna season is kicking off for those coming out to San Diego this Summer. They will be in range for 3/4 day trips. Leave the wife by the pool with the kids and jump on a boat!

Grab a couple cheeseburgers on the boat and take some bluefin (YFT, Yellowtail, Dorado) home with you and create your own sushi party with friends.

Bless you. I once mocked "hand-formed" burgers" on Facebook. Geez, people lost their shit. "Beats frozen!" Like you can't hand-form, then freeze.

At Gonzaga games, you can get "hand-carved" sandwiches. Like if a machine does that -- like at the deli counter -- it tastes worse?

People like their meat well-handled.

It weirds me out that people eat at McDonalds or Wendy's, then act all judgmental about others. When I'm there, it's a good day if I don't get the aftermath like the time I had 2 chicken burgers at the Burger King in Sierra Vista.

So is it true that ground beef can go from a cow to your plate without ever being frozen?

Sounds dangerous.

Exactly. They flash freeze the ground beef right at the start. The result? It stays fresh. What part of "never frozen" is "always fresh"?

The flash freeze kills bacteria. In beef and sushi fish.

I've really cut down eating fast food burgers since learning Kenji's Ultra Smashed Burgers method. It's quick, awesome and affordable. Getting a dedicated burger smashing trowel has revolutionized my life. Well worth an extra trip to Home Depot!

With crispy "beef chips" around the edges of the thin patty. Best burger in the world.

The key is to halve the amount of beef into two balls before smashing, doubling the amount of crust per one slice of cheese. If I can't see cast iron in each patty, then I haven't smashed them enough!

Not if it's smashed within 30 seconds of being put on the hot cast iron. Smashing the meat right away kicks off the Maillard Effect so the meat adheres to the hot cast iron and cooks very quickly while developing a flavorful crust.

My ultra smashed burgers cook in less than a minute and have so much juice that I can't buy the cheap buns anymore. They just fall apart.

Smash burgers are the standard burger where I live, and enthusiasts come from all over for small-town burger stand tourism. It's the perfection of the art of the cheeseburger.

In my mind when I think of a burger being smashed I think of some awful dirty diner line cook throwing a half frozen ball of hamburger on the griddle and then smashing the life out of it so it ends up dry and tasteless.

I went there for the first time in like 4 years a month or two ago...And it was awful. The meat was some of the most bland cheap tasting beef ever and it just wasn't good. I'd rather eat in n out 10 times again before that.

No, no. The dirtier his hands and the hairier his arms, the tastier the burger.

Thankfully we have a few local "burger joints". I still have yet to eat Five Guys and its right down the road. I can get a better burger for the same price at our local burger joints.

That said, im still a Fatburger guy, so this news is boring to me... Other than im now starving and just wiped drool off my face.

Every time I've eaten 5 Guys I've liked it less.

There's a Belgian burger spot at the French Market at Ogilvie Station where the burgers are about a thousand times better and the same exact price. Plus you get euro dipping sauces for the fries. Fuck 5 Guys.

Haunted Hamburger is really more for the view than anything. Good burger, but generally speaking, a zoo to get in and out of, and not a super burger, just a good one.

I really like Bachi Burger in Vegas. A little overpriced, but what isn't there?

Fatburger for the chains wins hands down. For the massive chains, Wendy's double, though I couldn't care less about frozen vs fresh. McDonalds serves it purpose as a dirt-cheap burger that holds all its contents (because it has few) when eating on the road. But, not a favorite.

Five Guys is good, not great. I like almost any burger, but the Five Guys pricetag is ridiculous. Just stop giving away more fries than the biggest glutton could eat and cut your margin.

I really like Smashburger, but probably for the flavor of everything else in the burger. The meat is...meat.

Had lunch with the wife today at the Yard House at Westgate today. I had the Kurobuta Pork Burger. Spicy candied bacon, white american cheese, arugula, blueberry ketchup, fries. Pretty damn tasty.
