Spent our honeymoon on St. Barth's, St. Martin, and (mostly) St. Maarten.

Been at work and off the net most of the day. Any damage updates?

Rumor is that 90% of Barbuda is just gone. 1600 people live there. No word on casualties yet, but I guess you have to hope a miracle happened.

I can't even imagine trying to ride out a hurricane living on an island. No where to go and the tidal surge could swamp many islands.

At least in Houston you could get in your car and head west or away from the storm. If you can't catch a plane out early enough you are in trouble. So sad

Looks like those tiny islands are going to get wrecked again by Jose

The PM of Antigua and Barbuda said that if Jose is a major threat that they will evacuate as many of the 90000 people on the islands as possible

Reading a story about the mass Exodus of people from Miami and south Florida and how the highways are bumper to bumper miles and miles outside of town and gas stations are empty. All I can think about is what about the poor people with no cars who live in Miami? People that can't just up and leave town and get hundreds of miles away since they can't drive or don't know anyone outside of the city or can't afford a hotel for days somewhere else or can't afford a plane ticket. Those are the ones that will be left behind and will potentially get hurt the most by the hurricane and can least afford the rebuilding afterwards.

There will be designated shelters inland they should be able to go to prior to the storm where there will be pre-positioned food, water, and generators. Not as safe as getting out of Florida altogether but safer than staying home.

I do hope everyone gets out. Although everything I'm seeing says that the entire peninsula of Florida will experience hurricane force winds and rain. Everywhere from the Keys to Tampa to Miami to Orlando to Cocoa Beach to Ft Lauderdale to Jacksonville.

Luckily the whole peninsula doesn't have to be evacuated. That would be pretty much an impossible task.

Unless you're within a few miles of the eyewall, structures should be able to resist Category 1 to even Category 3 winds. The main threats will be flooding from the storm surge, tornadoes, and then the lack of food, fresh water, sanitation, and power in the aftermath.

So inland places like Orlando, Jacksonville, and Gainesville don't need to be evacuated, nor do west coast towns like Tampa or Sarasota since they will be largely protected from the storm surge and this isn't going to be a 50"+ rainmaker like Harvey. In those places people will need to shelter in place and hope power is restored in a couple days.

I live in Sarasota and it looks like we will be staying in town and hunkering down. Supposed to be Category 2 winds. The anticipation and paranoia has been maddening the past few days. 1/2 of my staff (including my head chef who didn't even do any preparations for staff or inventory and I'm pretty furious) literally up and left on Wednesday. I have 3 people left that will be doing a dinner service with me tonight before we pack up the restaurant and prepare for the storm. Hoping for the best while trying to prepare what we can.

That's a big reason Houston didn't evacuate. The highways are gonna get jammed, and if they flood, where do you go?

It's just a sad situation all the way around.

Looks like the worst possible scenario for Cuba has weakened Irma and could benefit Florida. Down to a Cat. 3 right now.

Irma back up to a 4, and kicking South Florida's ass currently. Hoping we don't see scenes like the video below from the Keys and the southwest coast.

Hey Chi, how in the world does that guy get back in his car? Opening that door against that wind would take some real strength I would think. I don't understand how he opened it like there was no wind at all

Why couldn't he just stick his arm out the window, or more a selfie style stick with that device on it?
