Despite what Dollar Shave Club says, here's what I suspect the reality of the total situation is:azgreg wrote:Anybody here ever use Dollar Shave Club?
1) Shaving product companies ridiculously overcharge for the cartridges.
2) Though we haven't discussed this among ourselves, most of us have figured out that the whole "blue strip" thing on those cartridges is a scam. In fact, you can continue to use one of those cartridges long after that strip turns white, and eventually crumbles apart. You can basically get away with about four cartridges per year.
3) Along comes Dollar Shave Club to take advantage of all those who still haven't figured out #2. The pitch is that they charge so much less than the companies do, but the catch is that you have to buy as many cartridges as you'd otherwise buy.
Meaning: it's cheaper to stick to four expensive cartridges per year.
Unless there's something I'm not understanding about this, which is entirely possible.

I'm going to start a petition to turn off the soundtrack in supermarkets. What purpose does it serve? Other than to lodge into your head the worst adult light pop song from the 1980s. It's the first thing playing in your brain as soon as you wake up for the next three weeks. If not for supermarket soundtracks, you'd never encounter that music ever again.

I gained 8 lbs just reading that list. We've got three words for you, Phoenix: Beer. Battered. Bacon.
That's right. It's that time of year. On Friday, October 16, the Arizona State Fair will open its gates for an 18-day run that's sure to be full of rides, games, concerts, and awesome fair food.
Of course, you'll be able to find all the usual favorites at the 2015 Arizona State Fair — we're talking about giant turkey legs, deep-fried candy bars, corn dogs, cotton candy, caramel apples, frybread, and funnel cake. But there also is plenty of new food appearing at the fair this year. From doughnuts to deep-fried nachos, you're going to want to plan ahead (read: wear your fat pants) when you hit the midway this year.
Here's the rundown on 20 new foods to look for at the 2015 Arizona State Fair:
Deep-fried peanut butter and jelly cheesecake on a stick with bubble gum frosting: A crispy cheesecake treat topped with light blue frosting and red, white and blue gumballs (Sweet Cheeks)
Deep-fried wood-fired pastrami pizza (Cardinali’s Pizza)
Award-winning spaghetti ice cream (Cardinali’s Pizza)
World’s Hottest Ice Cream (Cardinali’s Pizza)
World’s Most Sour Ice Cream (Cardinali’s Pizza)
Specialty poutine: French, Mexican, Greek, shepherd’s pie (Fhat Dawgs and La Poutinerie)
Specialty Dawgs: Japanese dog, Mexican dog, Chicago dog (Fhat Dawgs)
Brownie caramel funnel cake: Tastes like a sweet crunchy brownie with caramel on top (J & L Concessions)
Raspberry frybread topped with powdered sugar (J & L Concessions)
Chocolate-covered chicharrónes (Bacon A-Fair)
Beer-battered bacon (Bacon A-Fair)
Bacon-wrapped pork belly: Premium pork belly rubbed with sage and rosemary and wrapped with two feet of thick-cut honey-smoked bacon on a stick. (Biggys 1 & 2)
Frosted Flake fried chicken (Get Pickled O Petes)
The Koolicle: Kool-Aid-infused pickle (Get Pickled O Petes)
Deep-fried nachos: Nacho cheese inside of hot orbs of crispy nacho goodness; Can be topped with guacamole, sour cream, jalapeños, and cheese. (Tater Twister)
The Tajin Candy Apple (Sweeties and Sweet Dreams)
Deep-fried Nutella (Fried A-Fair & Fried A Fair 2)
Affogato ice cream sundae: Sundae with a double shot of fresh brewed espresso in a test tube placed upside down into the ice-cream (Fried A Fair 2)
Fireball doughnut: Giant raised doughnut topped with a warm caramel glaze infused with Cinnamon Fireball Whisky, banana slices, and whipped cream (Brander Enterprises)
Coconut Samoa Doughnut: Giant raised donut topped with a warm toasted coconut caramel glaze with chocolate drizzle (Brander Enterprises)
Re: The Random Thoughts Thread
I saw every one of those on the news last week. Honestly, I was nauseated by the sight of pretty much the whole spread.
I mean, deep-fried Nutella? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of Nutella?

We use it occasionally as a chocolate sauce short cut, but that's about it.

Is it wrong that I'm starting to go full Bunker about the new "Star Wars"?
The pre-ticket sales are beyond ridiculous, every retailer from J.C. Penney to Wal Mart has their own merchandising deal cut, and Disney has already anointed the first trailer as one of its "classic Disney moments" in its new World of Color show before it tears up Disneyland to shoehorn a 16-acre Star Wars land.
Not to mention all the clucking about the white genocide Tweet.
From a fan: It's still. Just. A movie.

Re: The Random Thoughts Thread
Not joking or lying: As anyone who has lived in Italy can confirm, the purpose of Nutella is to provide essential nutrition. Italians believe that sugar is the healthiest food, and that high concentrations of sugar should be the focus of breakfast, la prima collazione, the most important meal of the day. They've seen the science that contradicts this notion, and they believe that science in an abstract way, but they can't internalize it in the same way we can't internalize that you don't catch a cold from being cold (which Italians also believe, and to the point they fear and avoid fresh air). Sugar packaging in Italy still presents the product as a health food.
As though cookies and pastries didn't provide enough sugar at breakfast, Italians spread gobs of Nutella on those cookies and pastries. And because they regard it as necessary for their health, they do so with about as much enjoyment as we approach whole grains or spinach. It's kind of weird to see people eat dessert with a stoic look on their faces, and an air of virtuous meeting of one's responsibilities.
Cookies and pastries are marketed as breakfast foods. TV commercials show mothers serving them to their families in sunlit rooms around the table, with children dutifully doing their best to eat them before starting their big day. Similarly, a cappuccino would never be consumed after 11 AM. Italians are baffled by north Americans who want to eat cake and drink a cappucccino after dinner.
When Nutella was introduced to the U.S., it blew people's minds. Since it appeared in the peanut butter aisle, it gave consumers license to regard Nutella as a food, as in Italy.

That was Ferrero Rocher's explicit strategy over which it has been sued and forced to 'mend its ways' (oh, sure).Longhorned wrote:Since it appeared in the peanut butter aisle, it gave consumers license to regard Nutella as a food, as in Italy.
It is close to 60% sugar and the number two ingredient is Palm Oil. The deforestation much of Malaysia and Indonesia for Palm Oil plantations is destroying the habitat of orang-utans and Sumatran Tigers, to say nothing of the livelihoods of the local human population .
Enjoy.

What is a four lane highway? I hear it stated both ways - the four lanes counting two directions going in opposite ways, or conversely, since the opposite direction doesn't mean much to a driver, four lanes meaning the four you have going in your direction.
And I said, ‘That last thing is what you can't get...Nobody can get to that last thing. We keep on living in hopes of catching it once and for all.’ Jack Kerouac, On The Road

Two reasons:KaibabKat wrote:Why are "Emergency Alert" messages on radio and tv always so garbled and full of static that you cannot understand them?
1) To give the impression that technology as related to emergency services is a half-century behind the times;
2) To avoid having listeners and viewers understand and respond to the emergency at hand.
