Outrageous Purchases Thread

I put up PV cells in November. That is not outrageous.

What is outrageous is that on a clear day like yesterday, I am making 35kW and exporting 20kW back to the grid. Today is 'mostly cloudy', there is still 4 or 5 hours of sun left, and I have generated 13kW and exported 6kW (and the cooler is running flat chat).

I think that by maxing out my roof space I may have over spent just a little. Of course, we will have to see how the winter months change the equation.

Your post just made me recall a goofy thing that struck me when whale watching out of Sydney. My long time career taught me naturally to geo-locate, so I was really fucking perplexed on the boat as the guide spotted spouts and said things like "Look SE off the bow". None of it made sense because I was triangulating from an internal northern hemisphere perspective. The sun totally fucked me up. You're south of the sun, moron!! Later on it sank in, duh: in Oz the PV goes on the N-NW side of the roof!

I had my act together when we went to South Africa. I'm slow, but I get there eventually.

Yeah, i admit to the same problem. I still have flashes of being turned around the wrong way after 35 years.

When we remodeled a few years ago i specified a north facing roof for the new addition in anticipation of putting up PV, and the didn't notice it didnt happen until it was finished. Turns out that was OK because the two trees in the back yard would be shading it for too much of the day. Ive got 4 panels the east and 8 on the west side of the second floor roofand 4 more one the lower west side. Im more than happy at the moment but the electrician is on his way (on Sunday!) to fix the circuit breaker that is trpping for no reason I was not amused last week when we didnt notice it had tripped on the hottest day of the season with aircon running flat out both upstairs and downstairs - shoulda been free cold air.

I haven't bought one and probably won't, but I want a vintage Aston Martin or E-Type Jag. Some things are just too beautiful not to covet.

yeah, besides that most people don't realize that assets, collector cars included, are just places to park money. Where would you rather park your money, in stocks, real estate, art, the bank, collectibles ... whatever. Just consider your exit first, then park it.

You're both right. Now is important and the exit is the more important part of ownership. Buying is easy, selling is hard, more so if purchases have deep meaning. The rugs represent travels with my wife throughout our life together. One doesn't expect to make bank off a diamond or a car or a rug. If our place is on fire we're taking some stuffed bears and a piece of art I bought for her in the 80s....it cost 50 pounds. If it burns I'm fucking dead.

We have the cheap Sam Levitz version of those. They are awesome if you have stomach issues like I do (GERD or heartburn) and need to sleep on a slight incline.

I did have to buy a really expensive pillow from Relax the Back to keep from jacking my neck up though.

I love this car/suv. It’s fun. Sure I’ll be eating ramen for the next 5 years but that salty life killing goodness is worth it.

Pretty much.

Yup it’s an overpriced people mover that goes 0-60 in 5.8, tows up to 7000lbs and handles like a champ on the freeway.

Perfect contribution for this thread. (The Tahoe didn’t fit in the garage -too wide- plus they are still on the old model for the 2020 MY, and we wanted a 3 row SUV, and wife wanted to go euro at that point)

Nice! Back in college Femcat lived at the apartments there for a year and worked there too along with a few friends. I used to go to get free nachos so I have some fond memories, including meeting Rick Springfield at some charity tennis thing and having zero clue who he was (much to his disappointment).

I don't play tennis so not sure of the tennis pro's but this place probably hasn't changed much in the last 30 years! This place has got to be THE most non hoity-toity club in the country. It's so low key, come as you are... I love it.
