He was the coach at the best game I have seen in person at Arizona Stadium.

http://allsportstucson.com/2013/11/09/a ... -and-ucla/

4. Arizona 27, UCLA 24, Arizona Stadium, Nov. 12, 1983

Arizona’s dream start of 1983 — 4-0 and ranked No. 3 in the nation — turned into a nightmare by the time red-hot UCLA came to Tucson for the 10th game of that season. The Wildcats, derailed in Week Five by a 33-33 tie at Cal, in which the Golden Bears rallied from a 26-3 deficit in the second half, lost three consecutive games before they played the Bruins in this classic.

Arizona fans became restless with head coach Larry Smith, although the Wildcats lost those three consecutive games by a total of only 19 points to Oregon, Stanford and No. 20 Washington. A crowd of only 42,640 showed up for the 10:30 a.m. kickoff, scheduled that early to accomodate the national television broadcast on CBS.

Those who attended were thankful they did not stay home because the finish was as good and improbable as any that has occurred at Arizona Stadium. The Wildcats survived against a UCLA team quarterbacked by Rick Neuheisel that had won five straight games (after starting the season 0-3-1) and needed only a tie to punch its ticket to the Rose Bowl. Arizona wide receiver Jay Dobyns caught an 8-yard pass from Tom Tunnicliffe for the decisive touchdown with 61 seconds left, and UCLA All-American place-kicker John Lee — impeccable from within 40 yards — missed wide right on a 37-yard field goal attempt and a chance to tie the score on the final play of the game.

I was there too. Day game, 10:30AM kickoff. Had "a few" screwdrivers. I think EastCoastCat and I both mentioned previously being on the field carrying around one of the goalposts.

My best friend is from New Hampshire. He credits seeing that game on CBS as being one of the reasons he decided to come to UofA.

This is correct UAE. Not only did we all carry the goalposts around the field but ECC and a few of his friends actually carried one of them back to Second and Cherry (across from Hillebrand) where it still remains to this day as a flagpole.

Still remains one of my biggest accomplishments while attending UofA.

Don't remember if I was drinking that early, but do recall back then you could bring alcohol into Arizona stadium as long as it wasn't in a glass or metal container.

A girl from our dorm got a whole 12 pack from the Circle K on 6th once. Don't know how she pulled that off.

ASU students once tried to bring a whole keg in a wheelchair dressed as a person. They forgot one thing - a ticket. Tempe Normal education at its finest.

Oh I remember drinking way before the game. Still hurts thinking about it. We would also bring in Bota bags filled with hard alcohol and add it to our soft drinks.

Complete debauchery.

You guys are lightweights. In the early 80s, you could bring pretty much anything you wanted into a game. We used to bring in those GOTT orange 5 gallon coolers filled with vodka and orange juice. To my recollection, we only got held up at a gate once and just turned around and went to the next gate.

My buddies and I were regularly completely trashed by the 4th quarter.

Who won? Who cares? Good times. Probably why my liver has fat on it now.

There’s a database of his photographs where you can go and see if you knew the women in them. Police still hope they can eliminate those who survived their photographic encounter with him so they can narrow down who he actually assaulted and/or killed.

The woman who chose him on the Dating Game met him backstage after the show and was so creeped out she refused to go out with him. Good instincts there.

That's the bad thing about motorcycles. In an accident with a 4 wheeled vehicle, the MC rider always loses no matter who is at fault.

Saw him leap into the end zone against the Buckeyes like 3 or 4 times in one of their many trips to the Rose Bowl.
