A man from upstate New York has been charged with providing false inspection reports and test certifications for parts used in SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, as well as vehicles from other aerospace contractors employed by the Defense Department. The misconduct was brought to light thanks to an investigation from NASA’s inspector general, the FBI, and the Air Force’s office of special investigations.

The man, James Smalley, was a quality assurance engineer at PMI Industries, a machining company in Rochester, New York that makes various aerospace parts. In January of 2018, SpaceX directed the firm SQA Services to do an internal audit, which found that numerous PMI inspection reports and test certifications — used to confirm the safety and quality of a part — had forged inspector signatures on them. Specifically, Smalley allegedly photocopied signatures of the SQA inspector and then copied and pasted them onto the reports.
This would explain why SpaceX has basically eliminated 3rd party source inspectors and have become quite anal of late on their in house source inspections.

I have an important science-related question, so I thought I'd ask you, the experts.

In these recent photos from Mars Rover, how is this not mud? And therefore liquid water (and not just polar ice)? And so kind of a big deal?

On what planet is this not mud? What am I missing here?

See especially the panoramic in the bottom link.

So is it the difference in gravity that coheres and packs such fine sand? Or something else? If you drove a vehicle over dry cocoa powder on earth, it would all be shapeless, and you wouldn't have clearly defined tracks. But I'd think gravity would have to be greater, not lesser, to have that effect in the Mars Rover photos.

Perhaps cocoa powder at Mars' temperatures has something to do with it.

It's more like talcum powder or cornstarch. If you rolled over that with a rover on Earth it'd look like that

It is known to anybody who is familiar with the laws of pressure, or who has tried to cook in the mountains, that the boiling and freezing points of water change when the water is exposed to differing pressures. Normally this effect is small, and only has causes differences of a few degrees. Researchers at MIT found that if water is placed inside a tiny enough space, a space only slightly larger than the water molecules themselves, then the freezing point can be raised to above its boiling point. This is done by means of carbon nanotubes, small straw-shaped structures that are the workhorse of nanotech.
