Re: RIP Notable Figures
As with a lot of active military too, and college students that's about the age mental healthy issues start. My son was lucky and survived his SBC attempt, although has some physical issues being shot, and constantly dealing with mental health issues. But has a job and a long time girlfriend.
Fifty percent of mental illness begins by age 14, and three-quarters begins by age 24.

Re: RIP Notable Figures
I have mentioned previously that my family knows his second wife Anne (now widow). She and her first husband were our neighbors in an apartment complex when we moved to Phoenix in 1970 and her family and our family have remained in touch all these years. Relationships were strained during the Trump/COVID years however as they were anti-masker/anti-vaxxers originally, but then they got COVID. He did push back on Trump once or twice.
Saw one news report that he died in an airport enroute. My son at Mark Kelly's office said they were told he died on the plane.
His wife was actually a flight nurse at one time.
She told my mom once that he wanted to die while still in office, thinking he'd get some kind of state funeral/honors. Mission accomplished I guess.
EDIT: Changed tweet. That's Anne behind him. My mom just talked to her. He passed away in his sleep on the flight from LAX to Seattle (on their way back to Alaska)

She spoke at my UA graduation. I’ll never forget how genuinely funny she was, as well as insightful, intelligent, warm, and genuine.

And it's pronounced JIF.
Re: RIP Notable Figures
No, it’s not. But I’m glad he invented it because it’s how I do about 30% of my communication.

It stands for Graphics Interchange Format. It's a hard G, Chi is correct.

You don't think the creator knows how to say it?
“It's pronounced JIF, not GIF.” Just like the peanut butter. “The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations,” Wilhite told The New York Times. “They are wrong. It is a soft 'G,' pronounced 'jif'.

He didn't invent acronyms. He doesn't get to decide how to pronounce the acronym that stands for his invention.

Re: RIP Notable Figures
I was working in IT when the internet was created just for universities and the DOD based out of Bitnet. My original Bitnet email was da012@calpoly.
Since day 1, it has been pronounced JIF even though we know what it stood for.
Now get off my lawn. I have some ASCII messages I need to combine using VI then convert to binary. Took about 5 minutes just to download and convert one Pr0n image off usenet.
And we thought it was fantastic.
Took about a minute just to render a JPG image to view it since JPGs are compressed but much easier to download.

Never said Jif in my life unless I was referring to peanut butter, not a download over a 2400 baud modem. That's the way it was back in my day, and we liked it!

FWIW I long ago depended on the quote Merkin provided for the definitive pronunciation.

Dove knows!

This is true life, the actual computer room at the UA.

And this was major progress when we had to punch our own Hollerith cards.

And you always drew a diagonal line across the top in case you dropped the box.

2400 was blazing fast! When I was a student at the UA it was 300 bps using an acoustic coupler, but at the time as a very poor college student could not afford the $50 a month to rent a dumb terminal with modemUAEebs86 wrote: Wed Mar 23, 2022 4:03 pm Never said Jif in my life unless I was referring to peanut butter, not a download over a 2400 baud modem. Been in that computer room many times Merk, usually late at night waiting for a grad student to rip my output off the line printer. I took Fortran 77 on that VAX system around the time RotN's was being filmed.

FORTRAN was my first language! Really liked how you didn't have to declare variables like you did in COBOL.UAEebs86 wrote: Wed Mar 23, 2022 5:25 pm Been in that computer room many times Merk, usually late at night waiting for a grad student to rip my output off the line printer. But then again, it made it hard for debugging.
Pascal was probably my favorite language, and the only one I know of that wasn't an acronym.
COmon Business Orientated Language. Thank you Grace Hopper!
FORmula TRANslation.
C was just coming out, and only available to grad students.
I finally took at C class when I was working, but then C++ came out and made it obsolete.

So, a billion people (maybe) watched Shane Warne's memorial.
Did you?
Did 1 billion people really tune in to watch Shane Warne’s memorial?

Shane Keith Warne (13 September 1969 – 4 March 2022) was an Australian cricketer. A right-arm leg spinner, he is widely considered as one of the greatest bowlers in cricket history, and in 2000 he was selected by a panel of cricket experts as one of five Wisden Cricketers of the Century, the only specialist bowler and the only one still playing at the time.
In 1993, Warne was selected for Australia's Ashes tour of England. He was the leading wicket taker for the six-Test series, with 34. His first ball of the series was written into the history books as the "Ball of the Century", bowling the experienced English batsman Mike Gatting with a ball that turned from well outside leg stump to clip the off bail.
International tributes in addition to the Cricketing world:
Some personal life tidbits:Various celebrities, including Russell Crowe, Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Elton John, Ed Sheeran and Magda Szubanski, also paid their respects. Warne's former fiancée Elizabeth Hurley paid tribute, saying: "I feel like the sun has gone behind a cloud forever. RIP my beloved lionheart". Throughout his life, sporting figures such as Michael Jordan and Mike Tyson professed their admiration for Warne.
...
Warne was born with complete heterochromia, giving him a blue right eye and a green left eye.
Warne was married to Simone Callahan from 1995 to 2005 with whom he had three children: Summer, Jackson and Brooke.
...
In 2000, Warne lost the Australian vice-captaincy after it was discovered that he was sending sexual text messages to a British nurse while still married to Callahan.
...
Following his split from Callahan, Warne dated English actress Elizabeth Hurley. Although the relationship at first seemed short-lived following the disclosure of Warne texting sexual messages to a married Melbourne businesswoman, the couple created a media frenzy when Hurley later moved into Warne's mansion in Brighton, Victoria. They announced that they were engaged in late 2011, but had called off the engagement by December 2013.

That article says maybe 2 million watched.
And no, I didn’t tune in at 3am to see a memorial service to a guy I’ve never heard of who played a sport I could not care less about.

That's why I posted the article link. The hyperbole has been extremely overbearing here for the last week.
And Warne was absolutely one of the all time greatest Cricketers, definitely THE greatest spin bowler if not the greatest of all bowlers, and REALLY popular in India as well as Australia, but he wasn't Mahatma Gandhi for crying out loud.

One of the great Dodgers of the '60's.
That '63 team with Davis, Roseboro, Frank Howard, Maury Wills plus Koufax and Drysdale swept the Yankees in the WS.
Loved the Koufax line for that year - 25 wins, 1.88 ERA, 20 CG's, 11 Shutouts, 311 IP's and 306 SO's.

Who knows, probably would have extended Koufax' career in today's game.

I read Eric’s newsletter religiously and quoted his tweets here practically daily. He was a champion of holding the press and politicians to account for their lies and falseness and he will be sorely missed.

I just got one of his mass emails sent out the day before yesterday. A bike accident? I'm getting more and more nervous about the dangers drivers are putting us all in. What a loss.

I miss the golden days of NFL football. No gloves on receivers back then since they QBs didn't have bullet arms, and Billy Kilmer couldn't even throw a perfect spiral. Kind of lost interest in the sport when Steve Young took over for Joe Montana.
