Damn. Wish I was in Bisbee. I'll be staying there over Valentine's/Presidents/30th bday weekend. Hope I get some snow then!

Bisbee is a really cool progressive city. One of my favorite places in Arizona.

Meanwhile our chances of getting a White Christmas pretty much fell to nil. Supposed to be in the mid-50s to near 60 on Christmas Eve.

I'm dreaming of a green Christmas...
Just like the ones I used to know.
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear the grass continue to grow.

I'm dreaming of a brown Christmas
With every Christmas shot I down
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be brown.

delivery fees and tips for delivery drivers aren't unreasonable. they are the ones out there in the cold making shit money to bring you the food! tip 10% every time! i've never worked food service but I always will tip delivery guys. they don't get any of the fee.

I'd always assumed I didn't need a second refrigerator for all the holiday food because I could just fill the big cooler and set out in the cold outdoors. I guess I'd always assumed wrong. #smallerfoodspreadthisyear

For late December, 40 is definitely warm for the upper Midwest. Average high in Champaign is the low 30s. We're not even hitting that with the lows this year. El Nino is real.

It is supposed to be colder in Tucson on the 26th/27th than in your neck of the woods. El Nino is indeed real!

Warm, windy, and thunderstorms. Under Tornado watch until 5 PM. Tornado already hit outside Chicago.

Merry Christmas.

I can't go run Christmas errands because it isn't safe to be out, and have to stay home ready to take the parrot to the basement. My wife has a basement at work to take shelter in.

Just read that Christmas Eve in 1955 was warmer than this year. They had 90's in the midwest that year. Crazy.

It's been in the mid-70's all week in the Carolinas and I had to hit the A/C last night just to cool things off upstairs.

Hundreds of records either have been broken or will be broken yesterday, today, tonight, and tomorrow. Saw some records from '55, '64, '87, and '08. But this is the most widespread warmth for the 24th, 25th, and 26th of December since official records have been kept (around 130 years).

Thanks, Chi. I'd ask you for another million dollars all in crisp 5-dollar bills again, but it turns out I just needed these after all:

Image

Except I've been wearing them inside my own house.

My pregnant wife hauled everything that could be salvaged upstairs while I, slowly but surely, sucked it all up batch-by-batch with this...

Image

And dumped it load-by-load into the drain of the downstairs shower.

Then I went to Lowes and bought one of these dehumidifiers:

Image

But got it out of the box discovered that, for mysterious reasons, it was filled with what appeared to be wet, raw sewage. So I returned it to Lowes and got a new one. It's running now. Hopefully all the damage is limited to to the baseboards.

LH, if any water got up onto the walls, rip out the drywall immediately because mold is already growing.

I hope not. Doesn't look like it. We have tall baseboards and some paint kind of peeled on part of them. But nothing up to the wall above the baseboards.

Wouldn't that be considered flood-damaged? No flood coverage. We got talked out of that one. This was caused by a poorly installed sump pump. The tether got caught on some wiring down in the crawl space, so stopped pumping the water out during the night.

I wouldn't consider that flood insurance which is an "act of God", but looking it up:

http://money.usnews.com/money/personal- ... e-coverage" target="_blank

If your sump pump backs up and your house floods as a result, will your homeowners insurance policy reimburse you for the damage?

Despite the fact that most people believe the answer is "yes," it is unfortunately not the case. That means homeowners could have to shell out cash for costly repairs, unless they specifically added (and paid extra for) coverage for sump-pump failures.

I have no earthquake or flood insurance. I'll just wait for the FEMA trailers.

The neighbor's entire 90' length of 8'-tall fence blew into our yard. I guess the ground just got too wet to hold the foundations when the wind sheers came overnight.

Spent today cleaning everything up, throwing stuff away, and assembling nursery furniture while watching the very swift moving creek level rise all the way to the top. It kept rising and rising and I basically lost hope. It didn’t overflow the banks, but if it had, crap, hard to imagine.

It felt absurd to be putting our house together while not knowing whether the whole thing would be in ruin anyway tonight. Surreal and very stressful.

In the end, I think we got away with spending a ton of money and losing a bunch of stuff and damaging baseboards and things like that, but otherwise fine. That new airtight floor we put in downstairs seems to have held it all in check. Glad I didn’t do that job myself.

It made sense to me because, being from California, I just couldn't imagine a world without earthquakes. I moved here and was woken up by an earthquake shaking my apartment in 2008, so I was convinced.
