I"m so sorry J. Last person a disaster like that should happen to. And at a really bad time.Longhorned wrote:Spent today cleaning everything up, throwing stuff away, and assembling nursery furniture while watching the very swift moving creek level rise all the way to the top. It kept rising and rising and I basically lost hope. It didn’t overflow the banks, but if it had, crap, hard to imagine.
It felt absurd to be putting our house together while not knowing whether the whole thing would be in ruin anyway tonight. Surreal and very stressful.
In the end, I think we got away with spending a ton of money and losing a bunch of stuff and damaging baseboards and things like that, but otherwise fine. That new airtight floor we put in downstairs seems to have held it all in check. Glad I didn’t do that job myself.
Keep us informed.

Thanks, George. Hey I think we're okay now. JMark has me worried about my February trip to Eugene, Oregon, though.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
As my neighbor can attest, drains can get blocked or back up. In fact, we looked long and hard at buying their house but when looking at ours one day in the fall we noticed they had about two feet of standing water in their backyard. The builder assured us that they would fix the problem but two years later it happened again and they got about a foot of water in their newly finished basement.Longhorned wrote:Yeah, everyone including the insurance guy explained that it's the safest place to be because we're next to a drain. Unfortunately the Feds have determined that we are not in a flood zone so we can't get flood insurance. This despite the fact that a sizable creek runs through our subdivision and that it was built basically on a swamp which needed to be drained into five good size retention ponds. So far we've had at least five homes (out of 70) experience flood damage. Still no opportunity to get insurance though.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
That's the problem with flood insurance. The Army Corp of Engineers surveys an area and determines that it's either a flood plain or it isn't. Then every once in a while they'll be surprised by some massive flooding (like what happened to my Wildcat buddy just outside Nashville) and they'll call it a "thousand year flood plain" - as in, "How could we have known it would flood like this? Probably hasn't happened in like . . . a thousand years or something. Sorry all your stuff got ruined and your current insurance won't cover it. Here's a FEMA trailer."

I have flood insurance in Tucson and I live about 2 miles from the Rillito.
According to the radar it is currently snowing west of Tucson and even reaching into parts of the Northwest side of town like Marana.

Re: The Weather is Crazy
The same storm system that brought unusually strong tornadoes to Texas in December is now bringing its oddities to the North Pole, where the temperature hit a balmy 43 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday — 10 degrees above freezing and about 60 warmer than usual, according to temperature averages.
The news has so far prompted a flurry of doomsday-sounding news reports and for good reason: when the storm system centers itself over Iceland, a region shrouded in inky, 24-hour darkness in the winter months, it could bring the temperature above freezing for only the second time on record there. Generally, the dead of winter in the globe's northern cap passes with temperatures around 20 degrees below zero

Just torrential downpours for a couple hours now. 6-7 degrees cooler and there would be a foot of snow on the ground

Yea I am not seeing much of the El Niño in the upcoming forecast. We are going to have above average temps with no precipitation. Opposite of the El Niño effect predicted for AZ.

Great thing about this weather, is that there's no excuse not to grill as much as possible.
