AVOCADO'S-AGUACATE HISTORY!
Technically, it’s a berry. Yet unlike any other berry you can think of, it’s not sweet or inviting to eat while still on the branch. The name avocado comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl, which means “testicle,” so named because avocados typically grow in pairs and hang heavy on the tree. Spanish conquistadors came to call them aguacate, a name that was further bastardized by English speakers (a young George Washington wrote in 1751 of the popularity of “agovago pears” in Barbados); once exported back to Spain, they became known as abogado, a word that meant “advocate” or “lawyer.” The avocado fruit became a staple in Central and South America but didn’t land in California until the 1850s, when an avocado tree was imported from Nicaragua by a private citizen as a botanical curiosity.

When did Avocados From Mexico acquire such marketing impact?

The Spanish considered the fatty fruit a New World replacement for butter, introducing bread to the natives in return. At one point, various Mesoamerican settlements offered their 19-year-old women as a thank offering for milled wheat flour. A conquistador by the name of Juan della Manguera wrote to his wife in Andalucia of a woman who "presented herself completely to me, her bare breasts bouncing as though caught by the future invention of slow motion video before leaning against a vending machine to show her back door to me." His wife thought it was hot and sailed over to join in a threesome. Avocados also contain a surprisingly high amount of fiber for serving, and are often used by vegans as a means of providing a rich basis for chocolate puddings or a replacement for eggs.

Leaving a pit in half an avocado only leaves the area under the pit not brown.

Avocados don't ripen on the tree. You need to take them off a week or more before you plan to use them.

Food City is worth a shopping trip once a week for cheap avocados, fresh tortillas, imports, organ meats, and general inspiration.

word for word what i was going to say essentially.
i go there for things like jalapenos, tomatillos, limes, other chiles, avocados, herbs etc. all muchhhh cheaper than the other stores.
right now avocados are 6 for 99 cents...now they are pretty small avocados...but that is still ridiculously cheaper. jalapenos are 3 lbs for 98 cents. love it.

In my area of the country, it's about an 80% probability that the avocados in our stores came in as a lucky byproduct of a massive cocaine shipment to Chicago.

not sure unfortunately. it has been a while since I picked some up from there but they were ok. if you need bulk avocados though that is your best bet.

one reason why I would have quite an adjustment if i ever moved away from the southwest or west coast. i'm used to mountains of chile peppers/avocados/tomatillos etc wherever I go.

No worries on Chicago, there. Cocaine byproducts or not. When I moved to Chicago from southern California and Tucson, I thought it was the end of my life with Mexican food. It turned out it was just the beginning. Mexican grocers, tortilla factories, restaurants, and tacquerias like I'd never seen before. Plus, some neighborhoods are more Mexican than Mexico City.

The fuck? You guys need to join a twin study.
Obviously, sd86 is right and asuhater is wrong. I have a lot of friends who moved out of LA to the east coast and the two universal complaints they have about their new hometowns are the (relatively) shitty weather and the lack of inexpensive and amazing avocados.

We did do one in 1993 lol. But I've just never been a fan of avocados, mushrooms, or a few other things sd86 loves.

I have at least half of one everyday. More after the nutritional content than anything but they make salmon taste that much better.
