Getting serious in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Biggest outbreak in history. 759 confirmed cases and 467 deaths. Doctors without borders say they are overwhelmed and can't stop it.anymore. But for some reason the WHO doesn't seem to care.

A woman who tested positive for the deadly Ebola virus is now on the loose in a Sierra Leone city with a population of around 1 million people. The woman had been quarantined in a hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone, when she was “forcibly” removed by her family, according to Reuters.

i'm just glad ebola isn't waterborne or airborne. it's mainly spread through contact with an infected person's saliva/blood/other bodily fluids and then yourself not keeping clean or washing your hands.

The outbreak is the largest and deadliest on record, with more than 670 deaths and more than 1,200 infections in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fatality rates for Ebola have been as high as 90% in past outbreaks, according to the World Health Organization.

The virus — which has an incubation period of a few days to three weeks — could easily travel to the USA through infected travelers, says Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.

I'd be more concerned about the amount of communicable diseases streaming across an unsecured border.

But that isn't a sexy headline like Ebola.

Nothing to worry about re: the transport and security of these patient's on US soil.

Patient at Mount Sinai Has Ebola-Like Symptoms, Hospital Says

A man who recently has been to West Africa went to the emergency room at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan late Sunday with symptoms consistent with Ebola — high fever and gastrointestinal problems, the hospital reported on Monday.

He is being kept in isolation at the hospital while tests are being done for Ebola, a virulent viral disease, but also for other illnesses that could cause his symptoms.

A hospital spokeswoman, Dorie Klissas, said that to protect the patient’s privacy the hospital was not making public his occupation, which country he had been in, whether he had been exposed to a patient with Ebola there, or whether he had close contacts like family members, friends or co-workers who were also at risk. Ms. Klissas said the patient’s blood was being tested for Ebola, but she declined to say when the test results would be available.

“We will continue to work closely with federal, state and city health officials to address and monitor this case, keep the community informed and provide the best quality care to all of our patients,” she said in an email.

As to whether other patients who were in Mount Sinai’s emergency room on Sunday night were at risk, Ms. Klissas said by email, “All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff.” But she declined to say what those steps were.

Catastrophic spread of Ebola in a country like the United States is extremely unlikely, as the virus is only effectively contagious at a late stage in its progression, at a point where the sufferer would already be in quarantine in a hospital.

It's pretty incredible what a mere seven genes can do together.

AIDS is actually really difficult to transmit and yet it found its way though the population based upon sexual habits and the blood bank and the fact that infected persons did not know for a long time about the infection. I'm never one to think that accidents can't happen or calamities such as someone exposed who is in a job who could possibly expose a lot of people either intentionally or accidentally. It is in the nature of these viruses to figure out how to spread. At end stages of the disease, the carrier acts almost unconsciously and can do bad things (in terms of bad decisions which could spread the virus).

AIDS is different from Ebola for exactly the reason you stated--it can be spread before the infected person even realizes he/she is infected. Ebola, however, is not contagious at all until a very late stage in its progression, well past the point at which the sufferer would seek hospitalization.
