Don't know what happened, so not sure where to put this, but this is just awful.

Spires that collapsed were standing since the 1100s

I read somewhere they're attributing this to the renovation.

I’m sure them making this statement in English is just a coincidence...

Holy shit man, I was just in the cathedral last week. I noticed lots of scaffolding on top around the spire.

Just awful, there is a lot or really beautiful woodwork inside the cathedral, hopefully it will survive.

April 15 is a cursed day. Lincoln died, the Titanic sank, the Tianamen Massacre, the Boston Marathon bombing and Notre Dame burning down all on April 15.

I wonder how good of French that was. The only thing that offends the French more than not being able to speak French at all is speaking bad French.

Incorrect. The main spire had to be replaced during Notre Dame's first major restoration in the 19th century. The 1100s spire had finally been beaten down enough to be removed by 1791.

Still a significant loss. Just not as irrevocable as first projected. Thank goodness all the art and original stained glass was saved.

And thank goodness for the stone vaulted ceiling, which protected most of the main cathedral from fire damage.

Notre-Dame is a 19th century building to a degree that you wouldn't readily realize. Even the earliest sections of nave elevations showing the original organization of the wall are completely reconstructed by Viollet-le-Duc. It's Chartres, for example, that preserves the medieval construction and experience. If something happened to Chartres, I'd just sit in my office and cry for months.

Yeah, Notre Dame never showed up in lectures in the survey courses I took on history of architecture. I suspect its cultural relevance is more down to its location than its architectural import. Nevertheless a tragedy. Somebody was welding? Or some bad electrical connection. Or if you’re a loony toon right wing conspiracist, it was probably Ilhan Omar’s fault.

The flying buttress was probably invented there. But most of what was important got renovated out of existence. And most of the stained glass is long gone.

It's the most famous Gothic building, but not nearly as cool or as important as the cathedrals in the ile-de-France outside Paris: Chartres, Rheims, Amiens, etc.

In your estimation do you think the stone underlying the wooden roof would have been able to withstand aerial tanker drops of water or retardant? When Lord Feltersnatch mouth-vomited something of the sort I recalled a moment on a wildfire in Montana: on approach to drop its load of retardant an tanker hit a down draft and had to drop early; a large accumulation of the slurry hit the top of an empty Cat D-6 crushing flat the cab and flipping the entire rig.

Was just in Paris a month ago. Showed my boys everything we could, including Notre Dame.

I also showed them the video of it burning, because time is fleeting and life is to be appreciated.

My 3 year old cried crocodile tears and a piece of my heart broke a little. I told him that while buildings can be destroyed, they can also be rebuilt—but you are one of a kind...

While I support those ideas...they should be done any place in Paris but Notre Dame.

Lol. It’s better than some of the designs I’ve seen. But then sex with a wild bear may be better than having your willy forcibly detached by Lorena Bobbit. Maybe?
