Yuletide Thread

If you get dragged to one of those holiday outdoor skating rinks, and you don't know how to skate, take my advice: It's impossible to fall forward. If you try to fall forward, you'll skate.

As soon as I realized this, I went from not being able to stand on ice to being the fastest skater on the rink. A UConn hockey coach who was there offered me a 4-year scholarship on the spot. I told the trick to the people falling on their asses, and we all suddenly skated right out of the rink into the streets of downtown Tucson, the world becoming a blur of Christmas lights and wild applause.

I went ice skating once. I fell forward and broke my leg. Never again.

I grew up in Chicago. 1st time on skates I was 4 years old.... knocked out my front 2 teeth.

Needless to say, I immediately went on to play youth hockey.

There is actually going to be a skating rink built by the Costco on Kino in Tucson in the next couple years, so year round skating in Tucson.

But this goes against my theory! If stand here in my living room right now and fall forward, I can't fall forward without raising my heels and shifting my weight to my toes on the way down. On skates that's impossible to do, and the blades remain fixed on the ice surface unless I fall to the side or shift my center of balance backward and fall on my ass. The only way I could fall forward is if I lift a foot and bring it down on the front tip of the blade, which would tip me with the forward momentum.

The day I had to learn Santa doesn't exist was hard. My parents & siblings sat me on the couch, explaining the impossible logic of a 285lb man funneling down so many chimneys in one night, before offering I go take my Mazda for a contemplative drive. Found myself in a sports bar later, but not too late. Had to work early the next day.

The first (and only!) time my parents seated me atop the lap of a Mall Santa my six-year-old self mistook the merry ordeal for a Catholic confessional:

Mall Santa: “And have you been a good boy this year?”

6 yr old self: “I got detention for sniffing dry erase markers!”

Am I the only one here who has so much stuff to prepare for Christmas that the house turns into a decorated but neglected crack house, and then I have to spend the 24th just trying to clean the house to be ready for Christmas?

The Chinese restaurant industry appreciates all those that don't celebrate Christmas.

Besides the drug stores that stay open just so they can sell tons of alcohol.

I grew up around South Bend Indiana. I like Ice skating. I went to "Howard Park" all the time. Even had lessons. I find ice skating fun, and my older sister is better than me. I also miss sledding. That's why I need to get back to the snow. At my age I can do what I want. People will dismiss it considering me dotty.

Of course, as long as they're not raw onions. But we've had that debate before, and it does not lend itself to culinary bi-partisanship.

You can’t convince me that Professor Longhorned didn’t write for The Simpsons…

“We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. I didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...”

We should always eat more onions. And garlic. All the alliums.

Roasted or grilled cabbage and onions are probably my favorite vegetables.

What emerges from a pepper shaker has all the value of the fluid that emerges from the tertiary run of water through coffee grounds. Without mills to edify pepper corns one might as well cook in the tool shed where hammers are handy.

Not that I would know, or be able to speak with authority, but it must have something to do with shuttlecocks specifically and cocks in general.

That time of year to credit the Lyrics of Frosty the Snowman with having the clearest articulation of Hedonism I've ever heard:

Oh, Frosty, the Snowman
Was alive as he could be
And the children say
He could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me

Oh, Frosty the Snowman
Knew the sun was hot that day
So he said, "Let's run, and we'll have some fun
Now, before I melt away"

What an ass Chi - sorry for that. (Did you delete your post?)

I started feeling sick late Sunday/Monday, took a test late Tue. night and was positive. Had to skip the 'Cats game with my son Wed. night.

Sleeping in a separate room and wearing masks so I don't get my wife and daughter sick (so far so good).

Christmas is cancelled with my mom and stepdad - will have to do something later next week.

My sister has been anti Covid vax since last year.

This year she’s had some serious health issues and would be vulnerable if something were to happen.

She got her jab this week.
