And when they do start playing they are actually pretty good. Not sure why they always park the bus against top flight teams.CalStateTempe wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2024 3:09 pmItaly is always so frustrating

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
The game was only 1-0, but Italy was pretty outclassed by Spain so the defensive type measures might have been necessary to avoid a worse scoreline.
As far as in attack for Italy, I don’t like Scamacca (18 games for Italy, 1 goal) and I actually don’t like Chiesa either. So not sure what they need to do.

Copa has started. I’m worried for the US (and for Brazil).
Enner, keep that leg down bro.
Mexico v Jamaica at the top of the hour.

I wonder if I’m watching a transfer to ManU evaporating before my eyes

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
I hate watching the USMNT.
So much athleticism, so little tactics.
Would be nice to see this group with a coaching staff not stuck in the early 2000s.
Balgoun is the second coming of altidore. Pepi upholding the heralded tradition of a second half atriker with no touch in tournament play.
Time is an endless circle with usmnt. They look good against garbage teams, and get rocked when they play anyone decent

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
That is why I don't follow them as close now. I was extremely disappointed that Berhalter was retained as coach. I knew that the USMNT would underachieve. The US has a lot of talent now, and there is no excuse they aren't playing much better.CalStateTempe wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2024 5:36 pm I hate watching the USMNT.

The problem is this crap ball, athleticism, power, not creativity is encourage from u8 on up.
It’s all we know.
We’ll always be “just good enough, but never great”. No matter how much “talent” we have on our teams.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Probably an unfair comparison but you watch a team like Uruguay and you easily see how far off we are.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Yeah I’m watching Uruguay right now and I’ll say I’m glad they aren’t in our group. (Yes, I know)CalStateTempe wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2024 6:05 pm Probably an unfair comparison but you watch a team like Uruguay and you easily see how far off we are.
I would say Uruguay has four players better than our best player, and they all play in the spine of the team. So that game will be real interesting/real tough.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Haha so Italy has moved from one striker to two against Croatia; AND Scamacca is not one of the two strikers (super bench relegated).
Chiesa—->also to the bench against Croatia.
Not too surprising. They’ve both been pretty bad.

So far it looks like “good Italy” showed up
At least they are creating and trying to win on the scoring half of the field

Italy actually gonna play now that they are down one?
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Yeah looks it.
Rewatch the start of the second half to 55’ later. Wild stuff.

England is a hot mess right now.
Apparently SouthGate had cups dumped on him when leaving the pitch.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
I missed it but heard there was a parade of yellow cards and a Czechia goal that somehow was disallowed.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
England’s path to the final is unbelievable.
They playing like dog shit…and could win the Euros by accident.

Both Venezuela and Mexico are very handsy with each other
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Missed penalty for Mexico, that’s a shame
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
USA v Panama right now
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Typical USA Panama game. Terrible all around (19’).
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Balogun is young, but that’s the kind of stuff I think we’ve been hoping for from our most talented striker in the pool.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
I would be ok with our team fighting Cassasquilla on the pitch. I wouldn’t let him off the field.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Well that was a quick tournament.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
And you wonder why I wont follow the USMNT with Berhalter. This loss doesn't surprise me at all. I stopped following him once he was retained. I don't get it. USMNT is more political than talent. The talent, if coached correctly is one of the best 10 teams in the world. I stopped following them. I should change my avatar. At one time I had hope that this cycle would be special. US soccer is abysmal when you compare talent and results.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Berhalter should have not been retained and canned long ago. IIRC Klinsman made the cops semis with a tougher draw while coaching US.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Only in the past few years have I come to understand the depth of talent in youth soccer in this country with my personal experience with my son, and how much infrastructure actually currently exists. For instance, we are seriously considering participating in Keeper Wars in St Louis next week. Never heard of such a thing even a year ago.
I really wish that the upper middle class would stop gatekeeping the game. If fields and leagues got set up in inner cities, the US would start kicking some serious ass.

Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

The great national teams have kids who came up from the sticks, barrios, south londons, favela, and love the game, kick ass as a way out.
We have Tyler and Braxton’s parents competing for d2 college scholarships. Can you tell have been a youth coach for 5 years now? lol
Meanwhile there this field in el Cerrito Bay Area, and one in west sac that with pick ups of youth teams going from 9am to 10p at night. All Latino population. And sadly these kids will never get a shot because they don’t have access to US soccer or the funds that Tyler and Braxton’s parents have

Italy once again playing lethargically.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
1 shot (none on goal) at the half for Italy. Not even close to good enough.
