Southgate might consider resigning at half time and see if a random assistant coach can get the tactics/subs right at the half

Georgia is a fun team to watch.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
This has been a very entertaining game. *cough* as opposed to this morning *cough*
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Bolivia has chosen a very interesting moment to score its first goal of the tournament (in 3 games, -7 goal differential).
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
So the US immediately gives up a goal after being thrown a massive lifeline. The Uruguay player was offsides and they seem to blow the review.
Classic.
Classic.

Hopefully this is the end of berhalter
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Fire Berhalter. Hire someone with Euro soccer experience. We waste way too much talent.

It’s the same shit the entire berhalter era. Stagnant and disappointing offense
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Also our job -should- be highly sought after (HC of USA the host). So yeah, this should be the end of Greg.
We will see what happens.

Panama and Canada are through to the knockouts, and we aren’t. Man that hurts.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Demiral goals plus defense 10/10 performance for Turkey.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
England wins a penalty kick shootout in a major tournament? Strange things are afoot. Guess statistically, it was bound to happen.

Read where France has not scored a goal during play in their 5 games. Either PKs, own goals, or 0-0 ties.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
That cross from Guler for the Turkish goal was A+++

Turkey was tough but gotta love the Final 4 teams. Bunch of powerhouse nations.
Been an unbelievable tournament with a ton of close games and great goaltending.

Been a good game. It’s tough, but you’d expect it.
Also, that Panama team we lost to 2-1? Well they met a real team and got their ass handed to them 5-0 by Columbia.
Definitely time for Berhalter to go.

The only concern is can he coach a National versus Club team? It’s a big difference. But it is a splash the US side needs that’s for sure.
Get that Uruguay coach who knows how to be aggressive especially against the better quality teams.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Being a top Club Coach is a year-round job. Being a Country Coach allows someone to "work" while on vacation, when the players are playing for their clubs. Klopp doesn't want the figures rigors of being a Club guy. Coaching a country would be ideal.
The issue is money. Klopp would command a lot more than Berhalter was making. Worth every penny, but then there's the equality factor and the women's Coach salary.

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
I think Klopp wants to take a break from all coaching tbh.
I’d argue his gig at Liverpool is easier to maintain then trying to go to a new country where he has no ties and trying to build up a program that has some talent but certainly not elite to a fan base where the sport is 4th in the country at best, with a team that’s middle of the pack in just the America’s, which is second fiddle to the Euro’s.
Why would he want the USMNT nightmare unless like you say they throw a boatload of money at him.

Also, the US doesn’t even have to qualify for the World Cup. It’s kinda cruise control for a bit.AzCatFan2 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 10, 2024 3:39 pm Being a top Club Coach is a year-round job. If someone was looking for that work/life balance at, let’s say, $8M a year, Klopp could do a lot worse than the USA job.
Of course if the Germans are smart they will make the same pitch to Klopp for the German job.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
This game is life or death for Uruguay.
This game is life or death for Columbia.
Q: Is it ever life or death for US players?

I too agree that I’d rather have someone that coaches national teams rather than club.

Never.
For South American players, playing soccer is life and death from the moment they first touch a ball.
For the us, it’s a fun hobby that they are kinda good at.
Huge gulf in passions

England has now been behind in all its knock out games (R16, R8, semis and final).

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Spain and Germany were the class of the Euro. It was a real shame that they had to meet each other before the final. That Spanish win was 100% earned and deserved.
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Columbia and Argentina were the class of the Copa, and the final didn't disappoint for the most part. Only disappointment was Messi not being able to finish, and James not having enough gas for extra time. But still, Argentina's depth was on display, and you get the feeling that even without Messi and Di Maria, Argentina will be a great team, and one to be reckoned with in 2026.

wtf happened before the game at the stadium? Seeing reports and it’s sad/disgusting how it got overrun and many ticketed fans were unable to enter
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
There were similar issues at many of the sites. Wait until the World Cup, for a shitshow...CalStateTempe wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 9:53 am wtf happened before the game at the stadium? Seeing reports and it’s sad/disgusting how it got overrun and many ticketed fans were unable to enter

People rushed the stadium and tried to enter without tickets. Security wasn't ready for anything like this. Here's a story from a local S. Florida source: https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/sev ... m/3361851/
Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
Former England coach, Gareth Southgate, has been linked to the USMNT job. Makes sense. Fits the desires for a Euro coach, and current US Soccer Exec is from Wales and knows Southgate well.
This article is how I feel. Southgate got results with England, but he wasn't the most attack minding, exciting coach. https://www.sportingnews.com/us/soccer/ ... 0506be0504

Re: Soccer thread (Champions League • PL • La Liga • Euros etc)
England has more talent, and is a higher ranked soccer country. But the US had the opportunity to play a WC on home soil, and does not lack for talent. And probably has more younger talent in the pool with experience than England. I agree that Pochettino likely chooses the Lions over the Yanks, but it's not a slam dunk decision.
