Is 4 points enough in this group to move to the knockout?

4 points will be enough unless portugal beats us by 5

Bradley played his worst game ever. Jones was a beast.

I think if we tied Portugal and lost to Germany by less than 4 we would move on.

100% agree and Coach K looks like a genius with his plugs and alterations.

Talk about a really hard win.

A huge win for the US with the Portugal loss.

US:
Germany 3 goal lead over USA
2 goal lead over Ghana
5 goal lead over Portugal

Next up for the group of death:
Germany vs Ghana
Portugal vs USA

Hope Altidore is healthy and okay, Dempsey can breath by next week, and Besler is back (Although Brooks did a hell of a job, and is better in the air).

If Altidore isn't healthy I'm not sure what lineup we will see.

Portugal is backed into a corner and we should expect a fight for their lives. A draw would be amazing. Today's was such a big win.

Bradley was terrible. I felt Beasley had a poor first half but picked it up in the second. Johannsson wasn't great replacing Altidore. Jones was great defensively. He had a couple good moments offensively but that's not his strength. If Bradley keeps giving the ball away in the middle of the field we are going nowhere. Dempsey was great but he didn't get enough touches. Howard really carried us I think. Besler was having a good game before he left. And obviously Brooks was the late hero. Based on how they looked in recent matches, the back line stepped up today.

Anyone wanna give me a quick 'explain it to me like I was 5' rundown of how this works? I think I ask every 4 years and the day after the champ is crowned I forget. Do the 4 teams in each group play each other...win you get 3 pts, tie you get...? lose you get...? And after all 3 games have been played, the top 1 goes on to play the other 7 winners of their groups? Just one game or another round or...?
And then...?

3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie. Ties in group standing are decided by goal differential. Top 2 from each group advances to the round of 16.

Great win. Winning, period, is big. Ghana are one of the quickest teams around, and we did not relieve pressure with being all that creative with the ball. But the 1-0 scoring line allowed us to be less searching and more defensive.

Bradley ' s game was a mixed bag. He was good on defense and his otherworldly fitness was on display late. But his touches were ugly and he was clearly thinking too far ahead and too much and not reacting. The burden of playing with a lead, which sounds funny, but makes sense in context, put a lot of pressure on forward players to play 4 on 8 or 3 on 6. No one was going to overlap from a back wing and possibly get caught on a counterattack against a very quick team. So it makes the game look more one sided than it is. Which was shown as soon as it was tied.

Get a point against Portugal and we are likely through.

Ghana deserves credit for controlling the pace and JK's formation helped limit how Ghana could attack our defense but at the same time we played nearly 90 minutes of passive ball when I think we could have been better served attacking a bit more. Not sure this was a JK victory. Howard and Brooks saved his ass IMO.

I get this but it was like we never even tried to counter, spent 85 minutes clearing the ball at every chance, over-the-head long passing that never materialized into anything helpful and more or less kept Ghana in attack mode the entire game. Sometimes I think you need to attack just to relieve your defense for a few minutes.

Still can't believe Boateng and Essien didn't started for Ghana, it was completely ridiculous.

Pepe and Ronaldo would have been scary, but Pepe's dumb red card took him out of the match vs US. Worst possible outcome for the Portuguese since the USA plays Germans last.

Algeria needs to somehow hang onto this lead which would likely have the effect of forcing Belgium to fight for second in the group...

Yeah it was too bad. Even a draw would've put pressure on Belgium and might've kept them from being the top team in the group.

Oh well. On to a fairly decent match up this afternoon!

I don't think JK has it in him to turtle and play for a draw (unless its like the 80th minute). I also hope we don't because that is how you get swept away.

Altidore is having a MRI scan tonight, but it seems that the best case scenario is that Altidore will be out for the group stage. So it comes down to what the heck do we do without him.

They really did, won me over in the second half once I was home and able to watch the entire half instead of catching glimpses in between end of day documentation completion.

Memo Ochoa was a sight to see.

Indeed they did. That is a huge victory for Mexico, a draw is a win for them in this case.
