The Olympics are dead to me this cycle.
There is no way on TFSM's Green Earth that the games should be going ahead.
I'll hear about the great performances and rejoice when the Aussies do good.
But I won't be going out of my way to watch any of it. I don't even know who is running the Aussie broadcast this year.

Since the board is rightfully interested in Baseball right now, it seems that Baseball can serve as a helpful indicator of how truly pathetic this Olympic season really is.
The Final Olympic Qualifiers were scheduled to happen in Taiwan, to choose the 6th and final team to qualify out of six 2nd place teams in regional qualifying tournaments. Taiwan pulled out due to Covid restrictions and the Tournament was moved to Puebla, Mexico. Then both Mainland China (ranked 4th in the world) and Taiwan withdrew due to safety issues. Then Australia (ranked 6th in the world) withdrew due to the logistical impossibility of getting the team out of Australia, into Mexico (via USA), back out of Mexico to Japan (again via USA) in the short time frame left to get it organized. So there might be a two team tournament in Mexico or there might not be a 6th team in Japan at all.
And this sort of thing is happening in all sorts of sports.
Pathetic is not the word for it.
It should have just been called off, let 2024 go ahead in Paris, reassign Tokyo 2028, move LA to 2032 and Brisbane to 2036.

It's complicated. We learned in 1980 that cancelling the Olympics effects many athletes who have trained their entire lives for this 1 event. I'm not saying it shouldn't be called off but there are many aspects to the games that we as spectators don't think about.

Reminds me of the 84 Olympics when the Eastern Block countries stayed home.
McDonalds had set up a promotion, where if an American won a medal in an event you would get free food. Needless to say, with no Soviet or East German athletes, we ate a lot of crappy food for a couple of weeks.

A friend of mine is working the olympics. He was pumped because he could go to any event he wasn't working... that's gonna suck if he can't go to anything.

It's NBA players against NBA players. it's not like Nigeria has one or two. The entire 8 man rotation is all current NBA players.

I love Olympic/World Cup basketball and how you get one chance to beat an opponent. When Team USA starts losing exhibition games or can't always win the gold or the cup, it means basketball has reached more of the level of soccer.
If Nigeria is losing to USA by 80+ points, we're that much further away. In a sport that's really meaningful for the world, international dominance is defined by always being in the running, and winning it all with comparable frequency in spite of suffering multiple upsets.
To make the world a better place, the world needs to get closer and closer to understanding that basketball is the greatest team sport on earth. The objective truth that humanity needs to catch up with is that basketball really is the apex of human achievement. Basketball is the only thing in the world that's bigger than all of us and the team we root for. So much strife in the world stems from the missed opportunity for the world to fully appreciate and care deeply about basketball. The day basketball surpasses soccer will be the beginning of world peace and prosperity.

The media is really into this 0-2 in exhibition games. This should be treated like the Lakers going 0-2 in their first two preseason games.

They don't even have their entire team playing. Booker, Holiday and Middleton won't be with them until the NBA Finals are over. The media just needs to make it seem worse than it is.

I remember during the ‘84 Olympics in LA going to Maloney’s in Westwood (used to be the pizza palace when I was a kid) watching the Olympic athletes hook up left and right with the local ladies.

Considering they've had 71 positive cases amongst workers and athletes before competition even starts...I wouldn't be surprised if it's cancelled at the beginning or halfway through

She’s 35! And even more awesome!! I watched last nite’s game - she’s added a really good change-up, and is consistently over 70mph!! She was constantly pitching from ahead through the one-hitter!!
I’m still astonished that we were able to beat her in the WCWS!!!
Meanwhile, softball may be in the Olympics, but is receiving second-class treatment - the games were played on a baseball field, with crappy adjustments to accomadate softball!!

I have no idea. Especially with the outbreak they are having in Japan.
Also apparently there is extreme heat in Tokyo? A Russian archer just collapsed from heatstroke.
