GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes Co-Owner, President and CEO Anthony LeBlanc announced today that the Phoenix Coyotes will officially change their franchise name to the Arizona Coyotes beginning at the start of the 2014-15 NHL season.
NOTE: The name change will become official on June 27 at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in Philadelphia.
“We are very excited to announce that our franchise name will change to Arizona Coyotes for the start of the 2014-15 NHL season,” said LeBlanc. “Becoming the Arizona Coyotes makes sense for us since we play our games in Glendale and the city is such a great partner of ours. We also want to be recognized as not just the hockey team for Glendale or Phoenix, but the team for the entire state of Arizona and the Southwest. We hope that the name ‘Arizona’ will encourage more fans from all over the state, not just the valley, to embrace and support our team.”
As part of the name change, the Coyotes will be introducing a new shoulder patch for their home and road jerseys in 2014-15. The patch will be unveiled for the Coyotes first preseason game next season. The rest of the Coyotes uniform will not change.
The franchise has been known as the Phoenix Coyotes since it moved to the Valley from Winnipeg in 1996. The Coyotes played their home games in downtown Phoenix from 1996 until 2003 when they moved to their current home, Jobing.com Arena, in Glendale.

What a cluster fuck going on in Glendale right now.
I saw that. Glendale is losing money so I don't blame them for not supporting the Coyotes, and they will still be paying for that arena for years. They should have never played in Glendale. The East Valley is much bigger, and has more money.
On Wednesday, the NHL announced the Arizona Coyotes will forfeit two draft picks for violating the NHL's combine testing policy. Commissioner Gary Bettman decided they will forfeit their 2020 second-round pick and 2021 first-round pick.
CHL teams accused Arizona of carrying out pre-draft testing not allowed before the NHL scouting combine. They allegedly put over 20 draft-eligible prospects through a series of physical tests.
Bettman held a hearing on the matter on August 6 in order to come to the conclusion and eventual punishment. The commissioner said, "I exercise my discretion to impose the aforementioned discipline -- which I consider to be more appropriate given the specific circumstances of this case."
Bettman added, in a statement, that he did not feel this violation was caused by intentional wrongdoing.
"While I conclude that certain Club personnel acted in a grossly negligent manner at best, which was conceded by the Club, I ultimately conclude that the record does not establish -- to a standard with which I am comfortable -- that those individuals engaged in intentional wrongdoing, as opposed to grossly negligent behavior."
While the rule says it could inflict a fine of "no less than $250,000 for each violation," no fines were given out. Bettman will also not be punishing any employees who "participated in, or may have contributed to" the said violations.
At the time of the violations John Chayka was the Coyotes general manager, but he is no longer with the team, after parting ways in July for separate reasons.

Opens the door for the Coyotes to leave Arizona. I don't think the new arena for ASSu's team will be ready in time. Not sure a new arena in Temps can be ready in time either.

My first job after I graduated from UofA was in Ticket Sales with the Phoenix Coyotes. It was the 1st year that arena was open in Glendale. It was obvious even all the way back then that the arena shouldn't be in Glendale. Hopefully they could a new arena done in East Valley or downtown. But Twitter is acting like Houston is about to gain a new team.

Worst team in the NHL. The only team without a win this season.

They are hoping they get lucky in the draft lottery and get Shane Wright. That's of course if they don't do something stupid again and have their first-round pick taken away.

How much are they going to charge for tickets with so few seats? Nice thing is there won't be a bad seat in the place.

Going to the last Coyotes game in Glendale tonight. Funny thing is I never attended a game there before, only at America West Arena. I've been everywhere else at Westgate/State Farm Stadium, even dropped my daughter off for concerts at the Gila River Arena doors, but never inside.
Growing up in Glendale if you had told me that it would one day be the home for an NHL team & an NFL team/Super Bowls, I would have said you are crazy.
Might actually try to go to a game at the ASU arena next year if I can tolerate the odor of Tempe and the ketchup/mustard colors. Doesn't look like there will be a bad seat in the place since it's so small.

3-0 Nashville 3 minutes in. Why do I attend sporting events?

What a fucking game! Down 4-0 after 7 minutes, the Yotes change goalies and win 5-4 in regulation.
Hasta la vista Glendale

I don't follow hockey news, so please excuse my ignorance, but how can an NHL team possibly have a home arena with a maximum capacity of 5,000?

It's a temporary fix. They want a full size arena built on the east side. That's where it should have been built in the first place - that's where the money and hockey fans are.

Thanks. I'm impressed by the patience all of this points to. If ever there was a possibility to move a franchise to somewhere else entirely, this seems like it was it.
On a related note, all of these teams named after Arizona instead of Phoenix seems so stupid to me. I get why the Diamondbacks had to do it at the time, but be like the Angels and change it. No fans of these franchises outside Maricopa County would care any less. But there's an enormous difference between how much the Phoenix metro area embraces the Suns compared to everyone else. Tap into some civic identity.

Do you remember that when the Cardinals move from St. Louis was first announced, it was going to be Arizona Cardinals? They even had hats and shirts printed. But within several months and before they ever played a game at Sun Devil Stadium, it was changed to Phoenix Cardinals, only to be changed back again several years later.

Yeah, that was because Bill Bidwell announced that no, the NFL tradition besides New England and Green Bay is to name teams for cities, and he's not going to name his team for a state. I don't know how it changed back to Arizona

Lol. As much as I’d love it, they aren’t coming to the PDX area. Don’t tease me like that.
