Re: Duke
So much ESPN/Duke bullshi!. How can Duke be among the first 4 out at 11-10 record in a down year for their conference. Duke just lost to a last 4 in team (Carolina) by 18. That is pure BS and is going to keep some really good mid major out of the tourney. They should not even be in the conversation.
Another pure BS one in the tourney is Michigan State. They have a bunch of 20-30 point losses and the only notable victory is over OSU which has now lost 4 in a row. OSU is a good team but not all world. Folks getting by on name only.

Re: Duke
Probably because of that rigged win over Virginia, in which an immobile Cavalier with clear possession of the ball screaming "Time out!" for two full seconds on the floor of Cameron Indoor is ruled a jump ball--and arrow to Duke with 10 seconds left.

Covid-19 charged; Duke flopped but got the call and then muffed the in-bounds pass.

I'm betting coach K looked at the FSU matchup, then looked across the locker room at a freshman team manager and decided -- yep, we're done and our team manager is to blame. Type up the news release announcing our unfortunate cancellation due to COVID.

I doubt it with all of the Conference Tourney upsets.

Re: Duke
When will we see the Schlabach article talking about how sources say Zion got paid $100K by Coach K directly and how long after that will Vitale and Bilas call for him to be fired?

Re: Duke
You don't understand, Chi.
Miller actually showed up at Ayton's home, incognito, carrying bags of cash with little dollar signs on the side. Schlabach has the forensics report that includes evidence of Miller's fingerprints on said bags of cash.
All Coach K did was look the other way while Adidas did the same with Zion.
Re: Duke
ESPN will only begrudgingly report on Duke, with respect to this story, when it has to. And even then, they will try to bury it or water it down. ESPN is like a political news channel -- it goes after some parties, while it props up and protects others, all based on the ideologigal position of the channel's leaders. ESPN will protect Duke and its relationship with Duke as long as it can. ESPN is in business with Duke and the ACC, and that says it all.
The bottom line is that everyone in the industry knows the major programs indirectly pay for players, and clearly Duke is no different. With respect to Zion, everyone knows money was all around the kid -- there are reports of financial negotiations with Kansas, but instead of taking the money from Kansas, Kentucky and elsewhere, Zion chooses Duke for free, just to spend 6 months with Coach K? Ridiculous.

Jeff Goodman reporting Coach K will retire after this season. Guess he wants a going away tour.

Yep, he couldn’t just ride out now because he wants his last tour so he can be exalted from Vitale to Chapel Hill and beyond

I would rather have Tommy Lloyd than Scheyer, but that's just me.
Re: Duke
Both guys clearly played big roles as associate head coaches and lead recruiters, but it is interesting that Duke is also going with a guy with no head coaching experience. Scheyer will have an easier road because the Duke program isn't dealing with NCAA issues, but it won't be easy replacing Coach K because at the end of the day, Duke reeled in a lot of top-ten players/one-and-dones because of Coach K's legacy.Beachcat97 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 02, 2021 11:09 am I would rather have Tommy Lloyd than Scheyer, but that's just me.

Good riddance. Crank K was turning into nothing but a brooding diva season by season. Long past the point of insufferable.

If I were a "Blue Blood" AD I would probably throw the kitchen sink at Dana Altman. But I've heard that the "rape cover up" thing is a huge issue internally in the basketball world especially after what happened with Baylor a couple of years ago.

Re: Duke
Am I mistaken, or could Duke have gone after (and probably hired) quite a few high-level, distinguished coaches? The whole "keep it in the family" thing only works when you're going to hire Roy Williams. There is not a single former Duke player deserving of that job, but hey, good luck with that, Blue Devils.

Re: Duke
Duke recruits itself and the year transition gives Scheyer the opportunity to slowly take the reigns while K basks in the glory of the ESPN year-long tongue bathing (it’s gonna be gross).
Why go through the time and expense of a search just to overpay someone who does things his own way and will have to make all new relationships? They can underpay Scheyer and not change a damn thing.

Re: Duke
Because if you can hire Tony Bennett or Dana Altman or an NBA coach, I would think that's much more palatable to Duke alums and boosters. I can't imagine Durham is brimming with excitement for the Scheyer era. Or maybe this is just a placeholder hire before they go hard after a real coach in a few years?
Is Alabama going to eventually replace Saban with a positions coach most of America hasn't heard of? I'm guessing no because they can get someone better, and they will.
There's a part of me that is just interested in knowing who Duke could realistically land. If Duke can't hire their top choice, can anyone?

They might have kicked the tires on a guy like Brad Stevens but I’m sure it was unofficial back channel shit. Duke would never allow it to come out publicly that a coach told them to go kick rocks.
