Wondered about this as we fell behind 36-22. It's remarkable. I remember the trip to LSU under Lute. It was for Edgerson. Cats got run off the floor. Doesn't happen often.

Game Story

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- If beating the fourth-ranked
team in the country was only this easy all the time.

Stromile Swift scored 29 points and teamed with Collins Temple,
Jabari Smith and Brian Beshara on a 23-4 explosion that closed
the first half and boosted Louisiana State to a surprisingly
easy 86-60 rout of No. 4 Arizona.

"From my perspective and this coaching staff's perspective, this
is the best win in the history of LSU," Tigers coach John Brady
said. "This win, against an Arizona team that is
(fourth)-ranked, that beat the No. 1-ranked team in the country,
Stanford; for us to handle them the way that we did at our
place; for where this program has been, to do something this
significant in its third year speaks volumes for our players."

Swift, Temple and Smith each had six points and Beshara had the
other five in the outburst, which gave the Tigers a 38-21 lead
at the intermission. Temple ignited the run and gave LSU the
lead for good, 18-17, on a 3-pointer from the left corner with
10:33 left.

"Most people will probably think this is a typo -- but we
weren't surprised because we watched film and knew what we had
to do," Temple said. "I think we just proved to the country we
aren't just a flash in the wind, but a team to be reckoned with.
I think this win proved that."

Swift shot 13-of-18 from the field, while the rest of the Tigers
were 20-of-50. He added nine rebounds as LSU (16-3) continued
the trend of the home team winning in the all-time series, which
is tied 2-2.

At the final buzzer, the crowd swarmed the court.

"We had fun," Swift said. "We just wanted to come out and play
hard and luckily we got a win. I think this was the best win
... it's hard to explain ... and I think the best part was the
fans. When they stormed the court afterward, I don't know, it
was pretty exciting."

"Our fans care about this basketball program," Brady said.
"Those that bought season tickets when things weren't going well
and stayed with this program, those are the ones I am happy
for."

With two seconds left in the first half, Smith faked a
behind-the-back pass and then threw down a resounding slam dunk.
Guard Lamont Roland described the sequence leading up to Smith's
jam.

"I saw (Jason) Gardner call the play, I saw (Loren) Woods
calling for the ball with his hand, so I just played the pass,
stole the ball and gave it to Jabari, and of course he made a
great play," Roland said.

After the game, Smith and his teammates were in no rush to the
locker room.

"Coach really wanted us to run off the floor and have nobody get
hurt," Smith said. "But we couldn't resist it. We had to kind
of walk off slow and feel the emotion from the fans and the
crowd. It was so much fun, I can't even say."

The Tigers, who already have assured themselves of their first
winning season since 1992-93, can continue to focus on getting a
berth in the NCAA Tournament, something that would appear to be
a lock with a 20-win season.

"We're trying to make it into the Tournament," Beshara said,
"and we've beaten Oklahoma State and Arizona, and now we just
have to take care of business. We control our own destiny."

The Wildcats (17-4), who got no closer than they were at the
half, fell behind by as much as 31 points when Beshara hit a
baseline jumper with 8:32 remaining to make it 69-38.

"They beat us in every way," Arizona coach Lute Olson said.
"They played harder collectively. Their inside people were just
too much for our inside people. Stromile was a totally dominant
player on the court. They just outplayed us so badly in every
area they could outplay us."

Arizona was undone by Gardner, their freshman point guard, who
was 1-of-10 from the field, including 0-of-7 from 3-point range,
for six points with four turnovers. Michael Wright had 14
points, Luke Walton 13, Woods 12 and Gilbert Arenas 11 for the
Wildcats.

Arizona plays its remaining games inside the Pac-10 Conference.
The Wildcats host Oregon on Thursday.

I was talking about the 2002-03 season where we were number 1 and went into LSU without Luke and lost right before Christmas. Damn that gym.

I never really hated Dick Vitale until the Dec 1990 game there. Dukie must of came at least 3 times that game.

Gene was redshirting in the '99-'00 season (student teaching kindergarten I believe). And Jefferson injured his foot on the Stanford trip and missed several weeks.
Had we not lost to Wisconsin in the second round that year, we would've played a rematch with LSU in the Sweet 16.

all lost games when scoring 80 or more. that record for Sean Miller in games in which AZ scores 80 or more spans seven seasons now and only accounts for one loss, in 62 games.

I was watching the end of the 2012 New Mexico Bowl v. Nevada when UA made that improbably comeback, and saw that Nevada ran 104 plays.

UA basketball is 163rd in possessions per game with 72.2.

That was also game 71 of the 71 game winning streak.

I met with Shaq before that game and got a great little drop for our student radio station that was promptly erased into oblivion by a mindless idiot a week later (in this one rare case, the idiot wasn't me). He was pretty friendly, because, in his words, I was not "a**hole media". In all reality, I wasn't even media...just a kid with a meaninless title that got me a press pass

The announcers (Lamar Hurd ?) made a big deal about Miller taking his next-to last timeout so early. They conceded that it was imperative to change the defense before any more time elapsed.

Sean Miller Earns USA Basketball Coach of the Year Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Dec. 16, 2015) – After each led USA teams to perfect, 7-0 records and impressive, gold medal performances at the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships for Men and Women, USA Basketball U19 head coaches Sean Miller (University of Arizona) and Dawn Staley (University of South Carolina) today were named co-recipients of the 2015 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year Award.

In addition to their performances in 2015, both coaches have suited up for USA Basketball as players, including a gold medal for Miller at the 1991 World University Games and a total of 10 gold medals for Staley. Having also been named as the USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year in 1994 and 2004, Staley becomes the first person to have earned both a USA Basketball Coach and Athlete of the Year award.

“Sean Miller and Dawn Staley were tremendous leaders for USA Basketball this past summer at the FIBA U19 World Championships,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO/Executive Director. “We are grateful for their commitment and appreciative of the sacrifices they made in order to lead these teams to gold medals.

“Sean led a young USA U19 team to incredible performances throughout the tournament, especially defensively, and the team’s quality of character was obvious in its thrilling, overtime win in the gold medal game.

“Dawn continued her remarkable service to USA Basketball, which not only saw her lead the USA U19 women to a gold medal over a formidable field, including host Russia, she also continued her duties as a USA Women’s National Team assistant coach and helped the USA to a very successful showing during the team’s October European tour.”

Led by Miller, the 2015 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Championship Team won its seven games by an average of 25.3 points per contest at the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship from June 27-July 5 in Crete, Greece. The gold medal finish was the USA men’s third in the past four U19 World Championships.

“To be named as a 2015 USA Basketball Co-National Coach of the Year is a great honor,” Miller said. “It is the culmination of the efforts of coaches and players working together for one purpose – a gold medal. A special thank you to USA Basketball for making all we did first class in every way possible.”

With Staley at the helm, the 2015 USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Championship Team won its seven games by an average margin of victory of 32.1 ppg. from July 18-26 in Chekhov, Russia. The gold medal was the U.S. women’s sixth-straight U19 title.

“It’s a pretty cool honor, especially when you look at all the great coaches that were coaching this summer,” Staley said. “I was really fortunate to have such a great coaching staff and to have a special group of players. They played hard and had fun. They put our coaching staff in a position to win an award like this.”

Staley also was on hand as an assistant coach for the 2015 USA Basketball Women’s National Team minicamp May 4-6 in Las Vegas and four WNT exhibition wins during a European tour and training camp Oct. 2-10 in Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic.

2015 marks the 20th time USA Basketball has presented its National Coach of the Year award, which was first earned by USA Basketball Women's National Team and Olympic head coach Tara VanDerveer in 1996. The USA Basketball National Coach of the Year Award is given to a USA Basketball head coach who made a significant impact on the success of individual athlete and team performance at the highest levels of competition in a manner consistent with the highest ethical, professional and moral standards.

In the preliminary round of the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men, Miller directed the USA to wins over Iran 83-53, Croatia 103-81 and Egypt 92-50. The USA downed Argentina 93-45 in the round of 16, Italy 86-65 in the quarterfinals, host Greece 82-76 in the semifinals and Croatia 79-71 in overtime in the gold medal game.

U.S. guard Jalen Brunson (Villanova/Lincolnshire, Ill.) was named the championship MVP after he averaged 14.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and a U.S. men’s U19 record 5.6 assists per game. Brunson also was the tournament’s top free throw shooter at 85.2 percent.

“One thing that made him a great coach is that he was willing to let the players be themselves,” Brunson said of Miller. “He had his offensive set and style of play. But at the same time he let us go and trusted us. We just played hard for him.

The USA’s average of 19.1 assists per game set a USA men’s U19 competition record, and its 55.6 percent shooting from 3-point (5-9 3pt FGs) against Italy on July 3 set a U.S. single-game high. Additionally, Chinanu Onauku’s (Louisville/Lanham, Md.) four blocks against Croatia on July 5 tied the USA U19 single-game record.

The USA led the 16-team field in seven team statistical categories, including scoring margin, points per game (88.3), total points (618), field goal percentage (.486), blocks per game (6.4), steals per game (13.0) and efficiency (107.9).

Prior to the start of the FIBA U19 World Championship, Miller and the USA squad tallied two exhibition victories in Crete, including a 90-82 win over Greece on June 23 and an 86-75 win over Argentina on June 24.

USA Basketball

great game -- Jones and Parrom (imo, Parrom's best game ever in an AZ uni....a glimpse of what might-a-been sans the gunshot ) were both fantastic with Jones making his statement with clutch buckets in crunch time
