Re: Coaching Searches 2015
He's the most realistic and the best hire of the 10 or so names thrown around. Better than Capel. Asu wouldn't be a juggernaut but if he can get top 10 classes and tournament appearances to st. John's and sweet 16s to Ucla then he can get top 20 classes and regular tournament appearances at Asu.
i was going to put the ua/asu records here...but i forgot what they were.
i'll just go with fuck asu.

Can't see ASU hiring a retread after firing Sendek.
Would imagine a young up and comer coach will get the job.

It's basically impossible to find a normal looking picture of Donnie Tyndall. Try Google image search, they alp come out bizarre.UAEebs86 wrote:You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? Should avoid the Capel, Lavin types and go for the Underwood, Hurley, Michael White types.
Re: Coaching Searches 2015
would love to see lavin back in the conf, even if he gets another studio analyst job with the pac-12 network
Re: Coaching Searches 2015
I really don't understand the love for Lavin. I think that would be a bad hire for asu. They need to go with a young and hungry guy, Hurley would be a great hire.

I was listening to College Sports Radio this morning and they were talking about the Tyndall hire at UT last year. Apparently the UT athletic director did not talk to Tyndall or his agent about the job once until an hour before the hire was announced. That is good ADing!!

if barnes is looking for another low expectation, cruise-along hc job maybe he should throw his name in the hat for the asu spot

Will Book follow Mullin to St Johns? Marshall should wait on Texas as opposed to Bama IMO

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketb ... ve-meetingA source close to the Arizona State program told CBSSports.com that Jeff Capel's meeting with ASU officials on Monday "went well," and that the two sides plan to speak again. Still, a source said, it's unlikely anything will be finalized until Duke's season is completed.

Pitino Jr did get the Gophers to a school record 25 wins last year. Stumbled a bit this year.

Did the year they made the Final Four under Clem Haskins get vacated? They had to have won more than 25 that year.Merkin wrote:Pitino Jr did get the Gophers to a school record 25 wins last year. Stumbled a bit this year.

They went 31-4 that year but it was vacated. Before that their basketball history is bleak.Spaceman Spiff wrote:Did the year they made the Final Four under Clem Haskins get vacated? Texas is a great job. Tons of resources, tons of in state recruits and far less pressure than other programs similarly situated because they are a football school.CalStateTempe wrote:Not many high level BB coaches want to be at a football school

Thing is: a lot of these big ego elite coaches NEED and want the pressure, and crazy expectations. The alpha coaches out there likely all think they can meet and exceed crazy expectations. Re: Coaching Searches 2015
The whole "football vs basketball school" thing is overblown.
Think Billy Donovan or Thad Matta care that their university has strong support for the football program?
It doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. A school like Texas has the resources to have an elite basketball and football program.

Re: Coaching Searches 2015
High Level 1 coaches have huge ego and don't like to be overshadowed.
Billy D is a horrible example because Florida hired him when he was 31 to run the program and he has learned to love it there. That is what big football schools need to do, established basketball coaches at basketball-first towns hardly ever leave to go to jobs in football dominated areas. Maybe times are changing and the SEC is going to put in big dollars towards basketball, but I will believe it when I see.
Matta is the rare exception, but he grew up in Ohio and this probably gives him the chance to coach in a familiar area.

Re: Coaching Searches 2015
Just because some coaches let ego overpower their brains doesn't mean Texas isn't a great job. That's all I'm saying. I don't doubt there are some massive egos involved.UAdevil wrote:Thing is: a lot of these big ego elite coaches NEED and want the pressure, and crazy expectations. there's also a different type of big ego-ness in creating one's own program and history. big "football matters" type schools provides the resources to do so without the distractions. billy donovan is actually a good example. look what he's done at florida - he had the chance to work on the biggest stage, with the craziest fans and expectations at kentucky, but turned down the job to continue building his legacy at UF.
Re: Coaching Searches 2015
If coaches have such huge egos, wouldn't that make them more motivate to turn their school in a basketball school, or a shared success school?
Re: Coaching Searches 2015
http://texas.scout.com/story/1533496-la ... arch?s=110Hearing VCU coach Shaka Smart continues to be the primary focus of the Texas basketball coaching search, according to two sources close to the situation, and that UT's search firm gauged the interest of Villanova coach Jay Wright as well as Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens.
One source said Stevens respectfully declined UT's interest. Stevens' Celtics are in a battle for the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference, and the NBA regular season doesn't end until mid-April. Messages left for Wright at Villanova weren't immediately returned.
As of 4 pm CT Tuesday, a source close to the situation said Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall hadn't been contacted by any Texas intermediary. The source said Marshall had interest in hearing from Texas, but that it hadn't happened by late Tuesday morning.
HD reported Monday that Texas athletic director Steve Patterson didn't have Marshall among his top candidates because he didn't think Marshall would be a good fit at UT "personality wise."
Sources close to the situation said the knock on Marshall is that his personality might be a little too brash and hard to manage in Austin. Those sources said Patterson wants a coach who will provide an exciting, winning brand of basketball combined with a personality that will engage fans.
Another source said UT intermediaries reached out to former Spurs G and former Mavs coach Avery Johnson, the choice of UT booster Red McCombs, as well as former NBA coach John Lucas. But everything we're hearing right now continues to point to Shaka Smart as the front-runner.
Re: Coaching Searches 2015
If they get Shaka, I obviously was completely wrong. I visited Austin for the first time last year and believe me I know it's awesome.
The only wild card in this is Texas leaks a ton of stuff to the media (Saban last year), and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if this falls through. Shaka would be a fool to not even listen to them, considering he can probably get another huge raise and extend his contract to like 2030. It's already to 2023 or 2024 presently.
I've always thought Shaka would be the ideal fit for Louisville once Pitino leaves and not performing well at Texas could damage that. On top of the great job security at VCU, he can lose in the first or second round for a few years in a row and still be a hot commodity.
Once he goes to Texas with expectations the game totally changes.
I hope this happens, he would be my number one choice if Miller ever left Arizona and him in the Big 12 at a major school would be interesting to watch.
