Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Russ Smith will rescue them with an incredible series of posts on the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions message board. It will be glorious.
Of the 12 coaches, Rush picked the one whose fans have the deepest passion, the longest memories, the greatest lung capacity and … did I mention deep passion?

Do we have any stats on this? How many teams have made the tourney after having players imprisoned in an authoritarian state? I'm guessing zero.

I was trying to think of what Richard Gere movie this reminded me of:
http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0119994/plots ... tt_stry_pl" target="_blank
That one. Those players need to retain Shen Yuelin.

No you totally have your American constitutional rights (and corresponding case law) in China. Just ask Counselor azdoubledown. He'll write it out for you in crayon and then submit that crayon drawing to the Chinese court for consideration and oral argument.Beachcat97 wrote: I'm not a lawyer, but I believe you're subject to the laws of the place you're in, right?
Of course the oral argument will sound like this: Jail.

I’m sure this is the biggest question on everybody’s mind.
When did Gangzhou become Hangzhou?

Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Scout is saying 20 days house arrest at their hotel and a permanent ban from China for all 3 players. Nothing official yet though. Gonna miss 3-4 games plus even more when UCLA handles it. Were these 3 going to get decent minutes?

Well, the NBA D League changed to the G League when Gatorade sponsored it. I would assume Gatorade dropped their sponsorship of Gangzhou at some point?wyo-cat wrote:I’m sure this is the biggest question on everybody’s mind.

Not sure they can even stay academically eligible but they were taking midterms in China. I don't think they play this year now at all. Riley was first post off the bench or a starter. But Riley and Hill were going to be solid 3 to 4 year startersJefe wrote:Scout is saying 20 days house arrest at their hotel and a permanent ban from China for all 3 players. This guy has said a lot of really stupid shit... but this is beyond stupid. He put his son and the other two kids in serious jeopardy with those words. If i was a father of one of the other boys I would break lavar's jaw so he could not speak again.UofAlum05 wrote:

Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Riley's the only one I'd worry about for UCLA right now. He would have been a solid contributor this year and starter down the line. Gelo is the wrong Ball and Hill needs time.MrBug708 wrote:Not sure they can even stay academically eligible but they were taking midterms in China. I don't think they play this year now at all. Riley was going to see lots of time but the loss is for the following 2 to 3 years

Well, the author does admit to having a shoplifting phase. That does not necessarily build credibility.MrBug708 wrote:http://www.bruinzone.com/b12/messages/3279.shtml

That said, when it all comes down, I do not disagree much. China is China, but this would be asking for a high profile international incident over sunglasses. I would assume there will be governmental posturing, but if the athletes are ready to grovel, it will blow over.
Then we move into what UCLA does. Just because it's super high profile doesn't mean it's not shoplifting. That is not necessarily a crime that ends a career or draws more than a suspension.
Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Miller used to write for scout about a decade ago, so he has some level of sources. But just writing what's out there right now

As an Arizona fan, I’m frankly in awe of how quickly and concisely that argument was made.UAdevil wrote:Yesterday.UofAlum05 wrote:When do we move to the "fire Larry Scott" stage of this drama?

I’d also like to see Scott get a lifetime contract if It means more Bruins will be locked up abroad.

Re: UCLA Basketball in trouble!
Whats more crazy? The fact that a UCLA fan started a thread making that argument or the replies from posters applauding Scott's effort to market in China? Good thing you said theory, since that means it has scientific backing, which it does. No way he'd do that for Arizona players.MrBug708 wrote:It just buys into the theory of Larry Scott doing everything for UCLA

It's funny how it's wrong for players to get $. If they only get free room and board in China because they shoplifted something, the amateur system really prevails.MrBug708 wrote:Pac-12 is picking up the the tab. Though I'm not sure actually

LiAngelo Ball has got 2 powerful forces trying to secure his release from China ... UCLA and Alibaba founder Jack Ma ... TMZ Sports has learned.
Ball and 2 other UCLA basketball players are currently under house arrest after allegedly stealing sunglasses at Louis Vuitton.
Our UCLA sources tell us, the University has deep ties with China for various reasons, and school officials are using their influence to try and secure the release of the 3 players. As for the nature of the influence ... UCLA is a prize school for Chinese students, many doctors have won research projects at the various UCLA medical facilities and UCLA sports has become popular in China.
We're also told Jack Ma -- a Chinese citizen worth an estimated $40 billion -- is also working to help free the 3 players. FYI, the team visited Alibaba headquarters Monday ... the day before the arrests.
Our UCLA sources also say there is no question the players pilfered the sunglasses so there's no attempt to prove them not guilty ... they are trying to use their considerable influence to ask for mercy. As once source put it, "UCLA and Ma are pulling out all the political stops to resolve this.

It sounds like UCLA is playing in a library right now. I bet the players can hear every Waltonism from the court.
