You can paint crap whatever color you like but here are the facts: Pastner is 37-29 his last two seasons. You can attribute that winning percentage to his time spent in the doo doo conference USA. Hes been in the AAC for three years now, 51-39 record in that time. Lets not forget he what he was handed the keys to, nor the recruiting classes from 2010 and 2011 he somehow pulled (at least two #1 recruits at their position). Missed the tournament two years in a row, no sweet 16s. Yeah...

Hes an assistant coach. Luckily for him, there was someone dumb enuff at Georgia Tech to think he was a good hire

Josh Pastner: Assistant coaches who golf 'can't work for me'

Newly hired Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner expects his assistant coaches to commit themselves to rebuilding the Yellow Jackets into a national power -- and that means they won't have time to golf.

Pastner, when asked recently about hiring assistant coaches, said that any potential candidate who likes to golf frequently "can't work for me."

"My first question to anyone I [might] hire is, 'Do you golf?'" Pastner told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "If they say, 'Yes,' you can't work for me, because that means five hours on a Sunday or on a Saturday. Can't. Don't want it. That's for my assistant coaches. Any of my assistant coaches, if they're golfers, not working for me."

Pastner was hired by Georgia Tech last week after spending the past seven seasons at Memphis, where he replaced John Calipari.

The 38-year-old Pastner told the Journal-Constitution that he has "always been a driven guy" and acknowledged that his demanding approach is "not always the best way to be at times."

Pastner attempted to clarify his no-golf policy to CBS Sports, saying "I love golf" but also reiterating the time commitment that he will demand from his assistants.

"I'm going to be really meticulous, really take my time," he told CBS Sports. "None of my assistants can be golfers. If any of my assistants are golfers, won't fly with me.

"It's not as much is that it's golf. It's that, if you're going to be here, you're going to have to work like crazy. We're rebuilding. It's going to be a seven-day-a-week job."

Georgia Tech went 21-15, including 8-10 in ACC play, this past season under Brian Gregory, who was fired last month after five seasons at the school. The Yellow Jackets have not reached the NCAA tournament since 2010.

I have a hard time seeing Pastner coming close to the 8 conference wins Georgia Tech had last year in his first three years combined.

My first question to anyone whose first question that would be is, "Do you seriously ever expect to be in a position to hire anyone?"

Don't mistake activity for achievement, Josh.
That's a quote from another basketball coach, you may have heard of him. Coached for UCLA back in the day.

If there isn't a more likable former coach, I don't know of him. And I'm not a big Gay guy.

Even Lute liked him, had his team lose in the PAC tourney to him when he knew Lavin was going to get fired.

Would Pastner actually play him in anything other than a blowout?

Have to think this is just a ploy to get Jr. some pub.

Will Pastner shag 10,000 balls over the summer like he did for his dad?

Jr is the 307th ranked player in this class, and the 57th ranked PG.

Has a Gonzaga offer.

How in the world did he win Arizona Player of the Year then? Politics?

Seems he should be pretty decent to win that award...

Just as college success doesn't equate to NBA success, maybe the same thing holds true for HS to college?

He's only the 5th best player in the state according to composite ratings.

Justin Wessels was Mr. Iowa Basketball.

Arizona just sucks as a state for athletes. Saw an article this morning about some hockey player from Scottsdale might be the #1 NHL draft pick. It will be the only the second time in sports history that a player from AZ was drafted #1 by the 4 major sports.

The first was....

I am not a Pastner fan at all... but 3 of those teams are in the top 5 of the ACC & ranked in the Top 20 (2 are in the Top 10). Those are quality wins.

Duke, regardless of rank, is 4-4 in the ACC (9th place) and are overrated... it does seem ironic that K suddenly is out with health issues each time his team is marginal.

I will never understand how he got that job, but at the moment the guy who hired him looks like he knew what he was doing.

True, but this is certainly a step up. He recruited well at Memphis but couldn't coach them worth a shit. If he's actually learned to coach??

I actually think Darryl LaBarrie has helped him as the Xs & Os guy he really needed at Memphis.

I'm reserving judgement...impressive start for sure, compared to what he did at Memphis.

I am still in the camp that he doesn't know how to coach...and I have yet to watch a game or do any research whatsover about Joshy and the team he brought with him. IE assistants.

In the ACC I guess. Because if you went 17-14 in the ACC that means you'd go undefeated in any other conference

GTech was picked to finish dead last in ACC by every major outlet in preseason. To be a bubble team in the deepest conference in basketball is pretty remarkable.

He should win the award. Brey and Roy will get votes, but he should win it.

Pastner went 4-5 in February and 0-2 in March prior to the Not Invited Tourney. He won COY of his conference against several coaches under recent investigation from NCAA (Roy & Rick) and a coach that is a legend that was out for a chunk of the season.

Give him an award for having only a slightly shitty season instead of what was projected as a really shitty season. Finishing in 11th place in conference with a sub .500 record is grounds for praise.

Bubble team? Please.
