Re: NCAA Tournament Games
That's appropriate. Both of those teams played incredible ball, hit big shots and basically deserved to win. Fitting that it came down to last shot for the win.
Re: NCAA Tournament Games
That was an awesome game from start to finish.

Re: NCAA Tournament Games
BTW Adam Spanich played for USC and threw up a prayer of a shot to stop UA from going undefeated in conference play in 98. That was what Paige did to tie the game.
The fact that UNC came back says a lot too.

Re: NCAA Tournament Games
That is one of the best finals I've ever seen. Great ending after 2 blowouts on Saturday.
Re: NCAA Tournament Games
What a game. And an even better finish. I think if Nova doesn't hit that shot they probably lose in OT after blowing the lead down the stretch.

What a game! Congrats Nova!

Re: NCAA Tournament Games
This year's tourney was filled with uninteresting boring games but the final was an all time great one.
Re: NCAA Tournament Games
First buzzer beater in the finals since ... Keith Smart and Indiana? I believe so. That's 1987.
Right where I want to be.

It was a tear jerker ending, but at least it wasn't a choke job. The game was won not given away.NYCat wrote:Idk how you get over that as a UNC fan

Is this the end for Roy? He seems even more emotional the past month than usual.

Even Smart was with 5 seconds left. I can't remember a true buzzer beater.gumby wrote:First buzzer beater in the finals since ... Keith Smart and Indiana? I believe so. That's 1987.

Re: NCAA Tournament Games
I thought Wright made a mistake calling a TO after the last made FT with 13 seconds left. Gave UNC a chance to setup their offense, and they scored a 3 to tie the game.
Then the last Nova TO worked to perfection.
Not sure what D Cryin' Roy drew up, but don't pressure the ball handler, and leave the 3 point shooter open?
That would not have been a UA finish.
Lute would not have a called either of the last 2 TOs, he liked to have the players win the game.
Miller wouldn't have had any time outs left to call.
Then the last Nova TO worked to perfection.

Villanova did a great job of disrupting NC's play, and I'm sure ANY coach would take that shot from Paige - it was awesome defense....Merkin wrote:I thought Wright made a mistake calling a TO after the last made FT with 13 seconds left. Arcidiacono not only had the presence to make a great pass, but his "brush screen" allowed Jenkins to get the shot off - any attempt to disrupt that drive upcourt or to get on Jenkins through Arcidiacono risked a foul, which would have been just as devastating....

Yep, Roy didn't pressure the inbounder and went into a zone for no effing reason anyone can figure.Merkin wrote:Not sure what D Cryin' Roy drew up, but don't pressure the ball handler, and leave the 3 point shooter open?

Re: NCAA Tournament Games
I don't know how you let Arcidicano get a free run like that. Plus, they had nobody on the inbounder. It was just laying back all the way, and 5 seconds is way too much time for that. Villanova got a great look and UNC did nothing to disrupt it.Merkin wrote:I thought Wright made a mistake calling a TO after the last made FT with 13 seconds left. Re: NCAA Tournament Games
The only explanation that makes sense is that with the game tied, I think they were more about defending the basket from drives than thinking Nova would shoot a 3.

Re: NCAA Tournament Games
That's valid, but I still think you want at least to attack the dribbler before he gets into shooting range. If you force him to give it up in the backcourt, the D has time to adjust. What they did ended in them not really locking in on Arcidiacano until the right pass gets Nova an open look.84Cat wrote:The only explanation that makes sense is that with the game tied, I think they were more about defending the basket from drives than thinking Nova would shoot a 3.
They had token full court pressure, but I don't know why you would sink so fast that you give up a wide open three to the only trailer.

Re: NCAA Tournament Games
If Nova was taking it out on their offensive side of the court, sure, I can see that. But from the other end in 5 seconds you have to stop them from advancing the ball. No two ways about it. Roy brainfarted.84Cat wrote:The only explanation that makes sense is that with the game tied, I think they were more about defending the basket from drives than thinking Nova would shoot a 3.

Re: NCAA Tournament Games
You can go end to end in 5 seconds, but I don't get extending pressure fullcourt but not trying to force the ballhandler to give it up. The reason you extend is to make the advance more difficult, otherwise you can just stack guys at halfcourt.Chicat wrote:If Nova was taking it out on their offensive side of the court, sure, I can see that. The philosophy seems like "pick up full court then don't foul." They never did anything but passively guarding after the inbound.

Re: NCAA Tournament Games
I think you nailed it that the instruction was "at all costs, do not foul". Then you get three guys guarding empty space. See coach? I didn't foul!
