Wazzu is not an easy job. If they didn’t like Kent, they may wanna hire younger, hungrier.

At some point you would think Randy Bennett would get a look from a power 5 team. Dude can coach

He can do better than Wazzu. I'd think he'd be a candidate at UCLA.

He turned down Cal last time around, but that Cal job wasn't very attractive. And Cal turned down Mussleman's request for an interview

Texas A&M fired Billy Kennedy and Buzz Williams is the rumored replacement.
Buzz is on my short list as a replacement for CSM if we part ways.

Hard to say. Info isn't being leaked very much. I think if they totally botch things, they will land Cronin or the other Bennett and I believe they can coach to where UCLA should be fine.

Rick Pitino is heavy in that rumor. Tell me UNLV and Pitino aren't a match made in heaven.

I don't think those are bad hires.
I still think the Ben Howland situation, followed by the Alford situation, might discourage some established coaches who don't need to take the risk. I also think the mediocre fan support is a deterrent. If UCLA was pulling 12-13K a night regardless, then it would be more attractive. But coaches see that just contending in the Pac 12 isn't good enough. Then again, many coaches will see how Alford basically screwed up a sure thing and figure they can certainly do better than him.

Ben Howland situation? Alford situation? What does that mean?
If a coach is worried about fan support, he's going to fail by year 3. No coach worth anything will base a job on "fan support" because a decent coach knows win a lot = fans.
What risk? A gutted Oregon team won the PAC 12 tournament. A UW team won the whole thing playing a pretty bleh zone defense and no real semblance of offense.
I don't think you said one thing accurate other than your last line about how lazy Alford was to screw up something so easy.

Phil Martelli out at St Joes. With Dunphy’s retirement after Temple concludes their season there will be a big shake up within the big 5

I'm saying I believe the perception on Howland's treatment (firing a guy who reached 3 FFs and had just won the conference tourney and Alford (firing a guy mid-season when he lost a key player to injury) doesn't look good. I think Ben Howland won a lot but fans got spoiled. And the moment he had a bad season, the bloom was off the rose.
I get the Howland argument about his recruiting relationships. If the argument was Howland burned bridges with AAU, the argument also has to be Alford had no spine and let LaVar Ball make his program look ridiculous.

Nobody thinks the perception of firing Alford is bad. While the other takes are lazy, this one is just bad. Sorry

Vanderbilt just fired Bryce Drew after only 3 years and after their season tanked once their 5* PG went down for the year.

I get it, but going 0-18 in conference play will sort of do that.

When Trump builds a wall that eliminates Canadian and European recruits and recruits that aren't white maybe Few will have to move in order to tap into other markets.

Cal has fired Wyking Jones. I'm sure Cal fans will want Jason Kidd to be the next coach.

If Self goes to the league they're hiring Beard.

That would be an even better hire LOL. Of course Hoiberg to Nebraska is really good for that program. Who is UCLA going after Choo? Painter?

At the moment Tony Bennett is their top target. I have no idea if they could pull him though.

UCLA feels like a lateral move, maybe even a slight step down. The ACC is just so much better than the Pac these days.

True. And I don't feel like Bennett's system is built for UCLA. It's a brand of ball that might not sell to high profile recruits. Not saying Bennett's style isn't successful -- but will the top players from SoCal want to play that brand? It's an interesting scenario.

Doesn't it feel a little like Howland 2.0? I'm not convinced Bennett is their top choice. I could see them going after Painter, Beard or Barnes.

Yeah, kinda. I think Bennett is a great coach. But are the top SoCal recruits interested in that style? And will UCLA fans embrace that style in Los Angeles? I mean, the optics look wonky. But Bennett would certainly fair better than Alford.

You can't be serious. Kelvin Sampson is the mother of all re-treads. Not that he hasn't had occasional success, but I just can't see UCLA settling for a guy so pedestrian. Would be an uninspiring hire. Think they're gonna aim higher.
