He'd run away from home but his Mother won't allow him to cross the street.

Definitely needed more lead time for programs to get thru any Covid issues. Whether that was starting camps/practice earlier or starting games later, I’m not sure.
But then again, college & pro football started earlier and they are still basically just hanging on for dear life with a whisper of a hope they can get through the end and crown a worthy champion. There’s no guarantee at this point that we don’t see a 7 win team in the NCAA playoff or for an NFL team to have to forfeit a playoff game.

Calipari's won a NC and been to three FFs at UK. So while I'm certain UK fans are outraged by a 1-3 start, they're also wicked spoiled.

So I thought I was going to be flipping back and forth between the NO/MIA and Wisc/MSU games. I watched the the first 3 minutes of WISC/MSU and it was just ugly basketball. Needed up leaving it on the NO/MIA game. Decided to flip back to see the score and maybe the end of the MSU game just in time to see another terrible charging call as the MSU players come full steam gathers goes up for the he layup and the WISC player slides over just outside the arc to get the charge call. That was all I can take and back to the NBA. College basketball can truly be unwatchable at times.

Between two ranked Big 10 teams there were only 12 fouls called in the 1h; less than 30 in total.

Duke rallies from 8 down at the half at home and survives to beat a 2-win Boston College team. Another outstanding effort by the Dookies that should no doubt be rewarded with a leap from the 21st ranked team in the nation to to perhaps the Top 10!

Phil Martelli
Posted: Mon Jan 18, 2021 4:04 pm
by TheCatInTheHat
So I'm looking for a ballgame to watch, and I see St. Joseph's at LaSalle, and I think "perfect, I'll root against that jerk coach at St. Joe's in a road game." And then I turn it on and he's not on the sideline, so I have to start Googling on my phone. You may recall many moons ago the incident with Phil Martelli and Lute Olson. Lute had been friend's with then-SJU head coach John Griffin and agreed to a return game in Philly after the two teams played in a Fiesta Classic at McKale. Then Griffin unexpectedly quit at a young age, replaced by his rather unpleasant assistant Martelli. An epic snowstorm blasted the whole east coast on what would have been the travel day, and many games were cancelled. For a mid-season non-conference game, Lute decided it wasn't worth dealing with the travel risk on the 5,000 mile round-trip, along with the likely cancelled and delayed flights, and he called to cancel. Martelli had tantrum after tantrum, and was aided and abetted by those fun-loving imps at ESPN who took shots of an empty gym and showed the sun shining outside on the day of the game. That would have followed some kind of logic if Star Trek transporter beams had been invented, but sadly that technology continues to lag in the real world. So I find out that Martelli was fired in 2019. (Sorry, but I don't follow the A-10 or G5 in general, and there have been a few other news stories to grab my attention between then and now.) Even those who gave interviews as tributes to Martelli couldn't help bringing up his recurring poor behavior, and the new AD who canned him would only explain the firing by talking about the need for a "positive environment for student-athletes" and left it at that. So he's back to being an assistant, now at Michigan. I'll take some level of schadenfreude over that.

Coach K
Posted: Sun Jan 24, 2021 1:11 pm
by TheCatInTheHat
So after the loss at Louisville, some Duke student reporter asked him the perfectly reasonable and innocuous question: "What are the next steps now, Coach?" And K starts to grill him, asking him what his major is. The kid is stunned and doesn't reply, so K presses with: "What's your hardest class?" And the kid says Economics. So after dissing the kid by pointing out that he's only a lowly student, K proceeds to lecture him: "What if you'd just taken the hardest test you've ever taken in your hardest class and somebody asked you what your next steps are? Have a little empathy." What an asshole.

Well if that Duke’s hardest test, they will be under .500 this year

Bit of a bummer tmrrw's Kentucky/Texas is cancelled. Besides our game, this was the only one I was dead set on watching. The amount of blue bloods weathering down seasons is oddly entertaining - Michigan St, Duke, Kansas.

With College Football over and the NFL winding down, I've been getting up to speed with CBB this past month. Following the now 5-11 Wildcats has been one of the better viewing experiences so far. 11-5 would be bad enough in Lexington, but 5-11 really has UK fans questioning how effective of a floor coach Calipari really is. Did guys like John Wall, Anthony Davis, Towns, Fox, and Cousins really mask how little control Calipari apparently has over what's happening on the court??? Last night they lost to Missouri and only stuck around late because of foul troubles that kept tripping up Missouri's starters. UK's point guard play is non-existent, their back-to-the-basket strategy is two decades outdated, and judging by the amount of technical fouls and disconnect on offense, it seems UK players are out for themselves, playing to pump up their draft stocks. One-&-done rosters are always a risk, but this is season long meltdown.
