I believe that in Texas this could be "aggravated assault"
Texas Simple Assault – Laws & Penalties

A simple assault that results in minor injuries is usually a Class A misdemeanor under Texas law. A class A misdemeanor carries penalties of fines of up to $4000, and up to 1 year in jail.

A simple assault that only involved threatening or touching is usually a Class C misdemeanor under Texas law. A class C misdemeanor carries a penalty of fines of up to $500. However, a threatening assault against an elderly person would be a Class A misdemeanor, or against a sports official/referee/umpire would be a Class B misdemeanor.
Other Assault Penalty Enhancement Factors

A simple assault can become a 3rd degree felony assault if

it is committed against a public servant or government official.
it is committed against a security guard or emergency services worker
it is committed against a family member or person with whom you have a domestic relationship, and you have a previous domestic violence or domestic assault conviction.

A third degree felony offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, and a $10,000 fine.
Texas Aggravated Assault Laws (Assault with a Weapon)

An assault is considered an aggravated assault if 1) serious injury is caused, or 2) a weapon is used in committing the assault.

Aggravated assault is most often a 2nd degree felony, with possible penalties of 2-20 years in prison, and fines of up to $10,o00.

Aggravated Assault Penalty Enhancement Factors

If you commit an aggravated assault against someone with whom you have a domestic relationship, or against a public official, police officer, emergency worker, security guard, witness, or informant, the charge becomes a 1st degree felony, with penalties of 5 years to life in prison.
Is a sports official a "public official"??

Can a football helmet be considered "a weapon"??

Who the hell called the code red on the official? Did that come from the sideline?

Those 2 kids need to be suspended for the rest of the season and someone needs to dig a little as to what involvement the coaches had in this. If they are found to be inbolved, they need to be terminated.

Freaking ref was blind sided. Ibhave never seen anything like that. My oh my. Texas I guess

I've read both players were kicked off the team, but that's not enough.

Suspended from school. Saw a claim that ref was calling some players the N word, but no one has backed that up.

Well you would think both teams would be upset with that. Even if that, those kids need to face up for what they did along with the coaches

If all they see is a suspension, there is something wrong. They both should be looking at jail time.

The referee was “very upset” and “wanting to press charges,” Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott said.

“The first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again,” said Elliott, who declined to release the referee’s name and added he was seeking guidance from the state officials association.

Northside Independent School District athletic director Stan Laing told KENS5-TV that the incident Friday was “disturbing” and “inexcusable.”

John Jay High is in a rough area of San Antonion, Marble Falls is rural and covers some suburbs of Austion and some stick hicks and ranchers as well. Not really a surprise there was some tension there, but holy hell what a stupid thing for kids to do.

Tell you what, that official just made the most money for officiating a game in the history of high school football. Probably drop any charges if he feels the amount is fair. You think you've seen it all ...

Go Cats!!

They should still be charged with assault.

I expected the race card to be played, but blaming a coach is a twist I didn't see coming. I don't buy either story. These punks are in full CYA mode now that they're facing serious trouble. No coach is going to risk his career over a game. Especially a meaningless non-district game like this one was. This would be the equivalent of RR giving orders to attack a ref for home cooking calls while playing Nevada.

Only one of them was ejected from the game. Apparently the other was called for a personal foul for hitting the opposing qb on the last play of the game after he took a knee in the victory formation. I wonder what his excuse for that is? Guess he hasn't figured out a way to blame someone else for that one yet.

Must be weird being a conservative and living in a fairy tale world where the only racism that exists is against white people.

So Bruins you don't think anyone who is a minority has pulled that card and played it when they felt it would benefit them? That would be an unusual closed minded thought.

Young people in trouble passing the buck or deflecting the criticism is hardly new. In this case I find it hard to believe the coaches didn't know what was going on and I find it hard to believe that if racial slurs were made that no other player or players other than those 2 heard them

I hear far more people pulling the race card than I hear racist comments on a daily basis.

Yes, that is a fairy tale world.

True or not, he was trying to make the point that the race card is too often resorted to to justify retaliation.

I find it hard to believe this guy said racist things although I know he could have. Even if he did though no way was what these kids and coach did appropriate or acceptable. I find it hard to believe since no one on the other team has said anything and I doubt this was the first time this guy said something after years of being an official. Chip Kelly racist? I don't think so but we see what happened there. If the guy didn't say those things he can be scared for life.

The important thing was that the ball hit the crossbar, which combined with the head shot in this case counts for three points in Rich Karlis Field Goal Pinball.

Ouch. I'm a little surprised, do refs stand there on every FG? What if it's a fake? They'd kinda be in the way...
