That is rediculous. To guarantee him a million a year would cost 20 to 30 million to fund that annuity payment.

Seems right. Back then your retirement is based on your highest pay amount.

All state employee salaries are publicly searchable in CA. http://www.sacbee.com/site-services/dat ... 42161.html" target="_blank

No surprise on the highest paid state employees:

I don’t know the actuarial ins and outs of CALPERS, but he’s paid into it at a certain level, his institution has matched at that level, so it’s funded to pay at that level. He’s not ripping off the state pension system.

Note that the Arizona state retirement system is much more generous than CalPers.

One of my brothers works for Pima county, and used to work for the UA, and he will be retiring at more than I make now.

My brother was a guard at Folsom prison for 28 years. When he retired he got a check for $12,000 and receives $3500 a month.

Safety officers have a very generous pension system here, and probably most places.

Deservedly so too.

Could not pay me enough to work there as a guard.

One of my coworkers' husbands was a plumber at the CMC (California Men's Colony). He is retired and also makes bank.

AZ has a separate public safety pension plan. UAPD is on it, while the rest are on ASRS.

Fucking this up would be the most UCLA thing in history.

Of justice can rise up
And hope and history rhyme.

Insane that we can lose 3 out of 4 to finish the season and lose a terribly coached game to ASU (and have our coach be 2-4 against them) yet keep out coach...yet asu gets to fire theirs.

It is a big mistake, Winning the TCUP over Arizona, Finishing the season with a winning record and conference record. Finish second place in the south and they fired him because he wasn't winning enough. ASU AD is a joke.

If Arizona want play the same game. Arizona AD will also be a fucking joke.

ASU was pick to finish 5th in the south. Finish Second Places.
UA was pick to finish 6th in the south. Finish Third Places.

Unreasonable expectations? 7-6 3-9 7-5 for 17-20 overall the last 3 years with the coaches own recruits and this is acceptable?

Oh forgot 9-18 in conference.

Because you look at the whole picture and consider the long game. Building ASU football to be more than mediocre is a decade long process, at least. Graham was someone invested in building ASU. You are looking at 3 years. Why not look at the whole picture? The '15 season was the only real failure. '16 was always aligning to be a shit show. This season was a clear indication of an upward trajectory. Started 1-2, then beats Oregon for the first time in a decade, goes on to have wins over a then #5 UW, and went on the road the following week in what is normally a trap game and dominates Utah.

Graham had two really glaring failures and he made big changes to correct one of them (recruiting failure in CA and in recruiting DBs in particular). The other failure was his turnover in coaching which is hard to really blame him for. His offensive staff has been leaving for promotions (Take a look at his coaching tree). This year was the 3rd OC in 3 years. Being a successful coach at ASU is about much more than on the field results. The program being built up requires someone invested in the off field stuff too. Graham was paramount to the new facilities and stadium fundraising. He understood the importance of connecting with the community. Graham made performance in the classroom a focus of the culture. You don't fire a guy like that unless you have a sure hire improvement waiting in the wings. I seriously doubt Ray Anderson has that lined up.

I think this has very little to do with fan opinions. Ray Anderson has wanted his own guy for a few years now. Seems almost personal for him. Ray Anderson has been polling the big $ boosters for the last 18 months throwing out potential names to see who moved the needle. I can't remember the last time a football coach firing was this unpopular with a significant number of fans. The casual fans are mostly ok with it. The tied in fans are overwhelmingly against this move. When they fired Erickson, Koetter, and Snyder even there was very little fan pushback. This is very different.

With hesitance I agree with you both. I say "hesitance" because all I heard from Tempe offseason was "8-4 or better for Todd to keep his job." So, on paper, yes, stick to your word and fire him.

However, firing him now seems to ignore aspects of the mini-turnaround that took place in 2017 and for all practical purposes would've continued into 2018. The awful defense Todd was forced to fix was playing night and day better in certain games (Vs Utah, Vs Washington) and in many other games were playing with a consistency not seen since 2014. And I thought Todd's development of Wilkins coinciding with his strategizing the offense for Wilkins' game management was solid throughout the course of the season. On the other hand his offense went through stretches of imbalance that directly cost ASU games, specifically against UCLA, where at times Harry would disappear despite overmatching the Bruin's defensive backfield or the running game would disappear when UCLA couldn't stop their RBs.

Point is if Graham's staff were kept intact and if the more experienced roster meant more consistency I think it would've been worth keeping Graham another year. I would've liked to see how it would've gone because Graham's tenure is now the third Sun Devil coaching cycle I've experience where a coach was fired amidst moderate success; in Dirk's case I wanted to see how one more season would've turned out, but not in Erickson's.

My understanding is that Graham was actually told prior to the season he would need to go 7-5 to keep his job. I think that bar was set with the belief that there was no way he would get there.

So Graham's buyout is reportedly between $11-$13 Million.
