It's the old cover the bum hole routine: Yes that person over there committed a massive, multiple decade long fraud but nobody else had any involvement or any idea it even might've been happening! I mean yes, we reaped significant rewards from their 20 years of fraud, but we didn't know, we weren't looking the other way or anything like that. Srsly.

Fun read. :)

Titles during that era should be vacated. That is if the NCAA really cared. But sign an autograph while in school...

Impermissible benefits, lack of institutional control over a long, long timeline...

Would we say USC lost it's football title for doing 1) less than this, 2) much less than this or 3) much, much less than this?

The NCAA has enough to justify really piling on both the basketball and football programs. But if UNC is willing to mount an aggressive defense I am not sure the NCAA wants to battle them if things go to court. The NCAA has a lot less authority than they'd like us to believe.

But didn't the NCAA go hard after USC because they refused to cooperate?

Unlike the SEC schools who did cooperate and received much less severe penalties.

Besides being SEC of course.

Roy Williams renegotiating his contract to take him in to 2020-2021 time frame.

Miller better get his FF and Chipper in that time.

Here's to counting the UNC Academic Fraud Findings reports as officially part of my summer reading plan:
The notice of allegations came six months after Kenneth Wainstein, a former top U.S. Justice Department official, delivered an extensive report that found strong ties between the fake classes and athlete eligibility. He reported that Debby Crowder, the longtime administrative manager for the African and Afro-American Studies department, had created them in 1993 after the academic support program for athletes complained about independent studies that required too many meetings.

Crowder responded by creating independent studies that had no professor. She assigned a paper and provided high grades so long as one was turned in. In the late 1990s, Crowder began converting lecture-style classes into the paper classes, in part because the university had limits on how many independent studies a student could use toward graduation.

Her boss, department chairman Julius Nyang’oro, not only knew about the fake classes, he offered a few more after she retired in 2009.

More than 3,100 students enrolled in the classes, roughly half of them athletes, who are less than 5 percent of the student body. Several experts have said the academic fraud is the worst in NCAA history.

Wow, a throughly corrupted institution. Fake "paper" classes used a grade handout system for over 1500 athletes, across multiple sports, and over the course of two full decades. Now that's how you Break Bad.

Unc fans and some media and blog articles I've read have basically said nothing will come of this and it will be a slap on the wrist...solely because it wasn't just athletes that benefited from the classes. Half of the people were regular students. They say that because of that it is a school admin issue and not an ncaa one and the ncaa will be powerless to hurt unc.

I laughed.

Some other, even more laughable comments from UNC's Scout board:
I find the timing interesting. The NOA was given to UNC on a Friday before Memorial Day weekend. You release news you don't want talked about on a Friday, and you release news you want buried on a Friday before a holiday weekend.

Because of the timing, I feel the NCAA wants this to blow over quickly. Thus I feel it will officially be considered a punishment but unofficially be nothing.
Ha. We will see re: the N&O. I think they have a vested interest to keep some kind of investigation wrt to UNC alive. UNC scandals sell papers. Folks who get off on the UNC scandals don't care if it is new or old information.

Huh? It could've been a LOT worse. NCAA states the easy classes were created by academics... not athletics to keep athletes eligible. That's freaking huge and counters what the media has been saying for years. Oh yeah, we'll get sanctions, probation, fines, etc, but the athletic department is relatively clean.

edit: adding another
The NCAA had the consideration to wait until after Dean's passing to start issuing notice. I think they are on our side.

So in that case the NCAA knocks down football and women's basketball while waiting for Roy before going after men's basketball -

So much for no worries if the NCAA isn't involved:http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/06/12/ac ... probation/
An accreditation agency important to colleges receiving federal funds put the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on probation Thursday for a year over its academic fraud scandal.

The board of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' Commission on Colleges stopped short of imposing the harshest penalty, which would have blocked the country's oldest public university from receiving federal funds including student loan proceeds.
