2024 Los Angeles Dodgers
Welcome Shohei!!!
Re: 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers
10 year, $700M. Is that a lot? Asking for a friend.

Re: 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers
I wanted Shohei to be a Yankee badly right up until the moment he hurt his UCL. Now I’d be content with Soto and Yamamoto. Feels like combined they are Shohei (and maybe about the same cost).
I know he’s not pitching in 2024 but what’s the prognosis after that?

It’s his second surgery so you never know. Eovaldi and Tallion had the same circumstances so you can use them as a barometer I suppose.Chicat wrote: ↑Mon Dec 11, 2023 2:53 am I wanted Shohei to be a Yankee badly right up until the moment he hurt his UCL. Re: 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers
I knew Ohtani was going to break records with his contract, but that $700M is absolutely insane. I see now way that contract doesn't end poorly considering he already is not pitching next year. In a sport like baseball, which from all metrics is on the verge of no longer being one of the main sports in America, that seems irresponsibly but it's not my money so congrats Dodgers.

Re: 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers
When I heard the news I was worried too especially because the Dodgers have some pitching holes to fill moving forward. They say part of the contract is deferred - what that means I honestly don’t know - but if they also can get Yamamoto which I’m hearing they still are in the running, then the Dodgers have figured out a way to make it work somehow financially.

Re: 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers
I just heard the Dodgers will pay Ohtani $68 mil a year…from 2034-2043.
That means they will only be paying him $2mil a year for the next 10 years.

Re: 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers
His annual salary will be less than their back-up catcher Austin Barnes which is too funny.
But he will probably pull in close to $50 mil a year in endorsements so I don't think he will be strapped for cash.

Re: 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers
Dodgers spending $325M on a guy most had pegged at around $200M four months ago is wild to me, but go off queens. Better hope he pitches up to that contract number. First round flameouts with this paper all-star team will be all the sweeter to the rest of MLB fans.

Talk about all in.
Dodgers have no excuse now, otherwise that will be the worst $1B ever spent by a pro team.

Re: 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers
Dodgers are just printing money and as a long time Yankee fan I am jealous as that used to be us before Hal took over.
With that said spending over $1B on one guy who may never pitch again and one guy who has never pitched in the MLB seems like a move by an owner who probably does not expect to be paying those checks down the road.

I love Yankee fans calling out the Dodgers. Are we the new Evil Empire?
I think the old concern about top Japanese players "never having played in the Majors" has gone by the wayside. Yamamoto per scouts is much better than Ohtani, Maeda, Tanaka, Darvish, etc.. who all pitched well in majors. That's why the Yankees and Mets were going to shell out roughly the same amount. But he has yet to pitch and inning so we will see. The only thing that gives me solace is he's only 25 as well as the Dodgers "pitching development" reputation. They usually don't flame out unless they are beating up women.
Ohtani's pitching future is certainly a concern but thankfully he can hit like a monster and makes the Dodgers top of the lineup look like Murderer's Row 2.0.

I don’t want to hear shit about the Yankees buying whoever they want. Hasn’t been that way in a while. Meanwhile in LA…

Quick question while I’ve got you here. In the last 5 years the Yankees have signed how many marquee free agents from other teams? I got Gerrit Cole and . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (the silence embraces us all)

The scouting on his pitches are impressive. The adjustment to the new ball might be a little to work in, but Senga was pretty impressive in the second half of the year and Yamamoto is like 3 times the pitcher.EastCoastCat wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 9:36 am I love Yankee fans calling out the Dodgers. Yamamoto
Glasnow
Buehler
Bobby Miller
That's a hell of a starting 4. Once Kershaw can sign and go on the 60 man, that's another pitcher. Sheehan and Yarlbourogh round out the depth without going into the minors much. 2025 will see Ohtani replace Buehler.

UCLA was clearly sacrificed in the name of the Dodgers.

The Athletic has an article out on the Dodgers security staff pressuring the woman who got Ohtani’s first homer to give it up for a couple signed balls, a bat, and a hat, and no Ohtani meet-&-greet.
The ball is likely worth in the $100k range and she and her husband feel like they were cornered and forced to give it up.
Not a good look coming off this betting scandal.

In other news, the Rockies are fucking terrible. I watched them melt down in the 9th against the Reds. It was horrific. They should be ashamed.

Wow, and I missed this one completely. Although why they were trailing the Rockies anyway is a cause for concern.

Re: 2024 Los Angeles Dodgers
I couldn't help but look at the Denver Post for their reaction. They concede the "epic meldown", but also have to make it about "controversy" because at 9-8 with two outs and two strikes, there was a checked swing that coulda-shoulda-WASN'T called a strike. This is what is commonly referred to as baseball. I'm sure the Dodgers felt there were some bad strikes called on them during the game, just like in almost all games. And the Rockies could have gotten the necessary outs before giving up all those hits and runs, or even scored a couple of runs themselves in B9.

Bullpen game shuts out probably the most lethal offense in the playoffs. And the offense woke up.

Don’t believe we would be able to shut out the best offense in baseball twice in a row.

Re: 2024 Los Angeles Dodgers
The bullpen win was ballsy. A high risk, high reward approach. EIGHT different pitchers across nine innings contributing to a shut out of the Padres. I doubt the Dodgers can make bullpen games sustainable through the rest of their playoff run, but outside of Yamamoto's five fantastic innings last night, the Dodgers starting pitchers are flat (Buehler is BAD), and I'm betting Roberts will try another.EastCoastCat wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 2:30 am Bullpen game shuts out probably the most lethal offense in the playoffs.

I would love to close out the series tonight and not have to go back to LA where the Dodgers will be forced to have a bullpen game in game 6 and if they lose face Manaea in Game 7.
But I’m an Arizona fan so I don’t expect to get nice things…
