2015 Arizona Diamondbacks

Post by azgreg »

What are you guys looking for this year? my goals are simple: .500 ball and make solid (not necessarily block buster) moves.

Wish list of things.

- Give young players a chance
- Ditch crap like Trumbo if he raises his value at all,
- figure out which of the 15 or so starting pitchers are of real quality(Hellickson, Anderson, Rubby, Webster, etc....),
- Goldy to continue his assault on the league,
- Chris Owings improves his plate discipline even a little
- allow Pete O'Brien to catch 100+ games just to see if he crushes the ball enough and can be a passable catcher
- see what the team has in Jake Lamb and at the end of the year see if Brandon Drury can hang at 2nd base
- Tomas dingers
- AJ Pollock returns to something like his pre injury form
- Inciarte plays plus defense and brings the bat a little forward
- draft the best player available for the best deal available in the draft (current The Goat favorite is Brendan Rogers HS SS)
- say fuck all and sign Moncada

Arizona Diamondbacks 'game-changing' TV deal worth more than $1.5 billion

http://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/m ... /23856871/
Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall called the team's new lucrative television deal a financial "game-changer," but he cautioned that it won't effect the way the club spends in the immediate short-term.

"Our budget is our budget," Hall said Sunday. "We were already spending money assuming this deal would get done and it took a little longer than we thought it would. Our plans were already in place and that included this nice bump, this nice lift."

Just how nice of a lift it is remains unclear, though more details emerged about the agreement with Fox Sports Arizona.

There are indications the deal is for 20 years and guarantees the club north of $1.5 billion. Moreover, the deal is also believed to include an equity stake in the network.

"This is game-changing for us," Hall said. "It puts us on par with a lot of our colleagues. Any increase in revenues, as we've said in the past, will go directly toward our (organization). It will help the franchise. It will help the product on the field."

Asked if the team can suddenly become big spenders in a market that currently includes a handful of presumably high-priced Cuban free agents, Hall said, "No, we really can't."

He said the deal includes a signing bonus but that the increased rights fees don't kick in until next year. In addition, he said, the team spent money this offseason on free agents such as Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas ($68.5 million) and fellow Cuban pitcher Yoan Lopez ($16.27 million) in part because it knew the TV deal was coming.

Hall said the club considered launching its own regional sports network but ultimately decided it preferred to remain with Fox Sports Arizona.

"At the end of the day, it just made more sense to remain with Fox," he said. "They wanted to remain our partner. We wanted them. They're very good at what they do. They put on a great product. They're willing to invest in our future and in the quality of our broadcast. Let the experts do what they do best. Let's partner with them for a long time and in different ways."

While other markets, including Los Angeles and Houston, have seen prolonged disputes between networks and cable/satellite providers after hefty deals resulted in increased carriage fees, Hall said he doesn't expect any such problems in Arizona.

"Fox has really good relationships with all the distribution channels and the chains," Hall said. "We have no concerns. I think it's business as usual. Our deal is not going to shake it up. We don't see that changing the way they do business at all."
That's a big number.

I like what Fox Sports does with the club, they need new guys in the booth though. I miss the hell out of Gracie and Sutton.

Chase is definitely not an ace, but eventually, things get jumbled up and he wont always be facing the other teams' number 1. I like him though, he kind of hit a wall toward the end of the season and had a few rough outings. He has good stuff and I expect him to have an ERA in the middle 3's, which is good for this team. Cahill at 2 is a joke. I am done with him. Collmenter is a solid 3. Im excited to see De La Rosa as a starter, he was pretty good in the pen last year. We will see how Hellickson turns things around in the NL. Hopefully he just needed a change of scenery, at one point he was one of the most promising young arms in the game. We saw Kennedy turn things around in Arizona (albeit brief).

As a whole, the rotation is meh, and so is the team. It is what it is. Gonna be a long season me thinks, but hard to get much worse than last year. Even if the rotation overachieves, I still dont see us as a 500 team. We are just average/below average at too many positions.

Yea maybe I should learn to read better... I was scratching my head why Cahill was the number 2 and Collmenter was number 3.

So Collmenter, De La Rosa (interesting), Hellickson, Cahill and Anderson (the last two TBD as 4 and 5).

Offense will be scrappy 1-6. Think Gosewich, Ahmed and the pitchers spot are gonna leave a lot of men on. Starting pitching has been as expected. De La Rosa's got electric stuff though.

On the bright side, only five runs are needed for tacos this year. Taco Bell doesnt think too highly of us, apparently.

Three rough outings by the starters. Hellickson was playing with fire all night and the Giants really could have made it a lot worse. Excited to see Bradley's start this weekend, poor guy gets the Dodgers and Kershaw for his debut. On a positive note, the bullpen has been solid but that won't last long if the starters cant go deep in games. Happy with what I have seen from Daniel Hudson so far. He had good life on his fastball last night, he was sitting at 93-95 with movement and may have even gotten a 96 or two in there. I don't know how short of a leash Hale will have with that rotation, but If he can give a few more solid outings in relief/long relief, he looks like he is ready to be serviceable in the rotation .

I dont know if I have ever seen fans of any other team wear their team's stuff in those seats. So they are either treating all fans the same, or Dodgers fans are the only obnoxious ones. We already know the answer to that

We've done far worse, so we have that going for us. I guess the thinking was to give up two minor leaguers outside the top 10 with limited upsides in our organization for a experienced starter who will give two seasons of cheaper salary due to arbitration. If he figures it out, hes a steal, if not, you aren't eating much salary. I think the idea was for a two-year bridge to fill the rotation until the younger arms are ready.

I just don't think too highly of Mike Harkey, I don't see him as a guy who is going to turn careers around with a few adjustments like, say, a Dave Duncan or Brent Strom. He just doesn't seem like a guy who gets the technical side of pitching outside of basic knowledge, or he atleast doesn't know how to apply it. You saw it with guys last year, McCarthy and Cahill, and I see it with Hellickson. Hellickson needs to understand he cannot be successful with a strikeout pitcher's mentality. He has effective stuff, but he does not have explosive, strikeout stuff. His K/9 stat is good, but that is partially misleading, because he is trying to strike everyone out and is too careful. He nibbles. His nibbling causes high pitch counts and he gets behind batters and into too many deep counts. Really basic stuff, Brenly said the same thing last night, he needs to learn to pitch to contact. His only plus pitch is his changeup, but if that isnt a plus-plus pitch that is going to send both righties and lefties back to the dugout with two, you gotta rethink your approach.

Interesting to see Yasmany Tomas get called up so quickly, especially considering he was under the mendoza line at AAA and doesn't appear to have been tearing the cover off the ball. Don't know how that works with the log jam of quality outfielders who need at bats. He's done at third, at least the rest of this year.

I figure it means Trumbo might be one his way out. Some AL team in need of DH should jump on him.

That was what went through my head, but it is really early in the season and you usually don't see guys getting moved unless a team has a dire need (which is hard early in the season because you want to give guys a chance to step into the DH role and succeed) or they lose a guy to the 60 day DL or for the season. I guess if they were really bent on moving him now, they could, you just are going to get peanuts in return right now.

Offense looks like it has some potential. Still, long season means don't expect too much. It does seem like there's a direction in place. Even if still flawed, I like having the young options all over the field.

Long season is right. It's definitely a step in the right direction though. Lots of positives to build from.

Goldy jumping out to an early MVP favorite. trumbo swinging a solid bat, important for trade value. Ender and Pollock have been as good of a 1-2 tablesetting punch as you can get. I think 1-3 we can be as good as anyone in the NL, all young. I think Lamb is the real deal at third. His minor league splits vs lefties were actually pretty damn solid in 13 and 14. Id like to see Hale start giving him starts against LHP.

You gotta be excited about what we have seen out of Bradley early. At worst, he is looking like a solid number 2 guy. When Corbin gets back and gets his feet underneath him again, hes a very very solid number 3. This team is literally a year or two and a top of the line free agent signing starting pitcher and an upgrade at catcher from being a team who can contend in the west.

Essentially got a backup catcher, a reliever who was very good last year but sucks this year, an insignificant prospect, and Vladimir Guerrero's nephew. Not a whole lot for a 260 guy who homers every 19 at bats and still has a year of arbitration eligibility and Vidal Nuno, who has pitched very well in three major league outings this year and was dealing at AAA. Not horrible, but they could have waited a little longer and gotten a better return from an AL East team, as all of them are average or worse and that division is up for grabs. Guerrero looks somewhat promising but he is struggling at AA early this year. Mariners number 7 prospect and obviously not in the top 100.

Not the worst trade but definitely not a good one IMO.

Leone came in and got lit up and blew Ray's great start last night. In an inning gave up 4 hits and 3 earned. That is the first time I had seen him pitch live. He has explosive stuff, as good as the best arms in our bullpen, but his command was terrible last night and appears to be so the rest of the season; he walks almost a guy an inning and his WHIP is almost 2.00. Hopefully they option him down to AAA and he can work on some things there and not blow any more leads, though we should be used to that by now anyway.

That's the consensus w just about everybody. This is a weak draft for pitching but Id rather the Dbacks pick Carson Fullmer at 1. Our starting rotation is a GD joke and we don't have a top of the rotation guy. Those guys are getting 18-25 million on the free agent market and we wont pay that, so you gotta build the rotation through the draft like the Rays do.

He has question marks but you gotta take a chance. Worst case you have a dominant 8th or 9th inning guy with the upside being he has stuff to be a dominant starter if he works on a few things w his mechanics. Besides, We have Ahmed, Owings, Lamb, and possibly Tomas (who they may keep at OF, but can continue to work at 3rd) and Drury at AA who can fill three infield spots. If one or two of those guys cant hack it, we can find a lower selection or tap the free agent market for a serviceable player for a much cheaper price than it would cost for a top starter.

They say Dansby is NOT going to be another Tulowotzki, they project him as an above average shortstop in the majors. Teams love him though so that speaks to this draft. The high school shortstop rodgers is going to take 3-4 years in the minors. Im tired of sucking, I want a guy who is going to contribute sooner. Fullmer and Dansby both fit that
