Putting a whoopin' on the Rockies tonight. 16-8 top of the 9th.
Mods, can we get a sub-forum for MLB up one level? Then move this thread there. Thanks.

DBacks are undefeated since this site started. Coincidence? I think not.

Sounds like they got a very high-ceiling pitcher with their 1st, and some quality talent with other first-day picks in multiple positions.
Baseball America said their 1st-Rounder might have the highest ceiling of any prep pitcher in the class. He's very young, very raw with command, but plus-plus curve, plus fastball at 91-95 consistent, plus-plus frame and motion, and improving change-up/slider.

The whole first day was pretty awesome. The DBacks took guys who fell to them and made their picks count. Touki has as much talent as any pitcher in the draft and to get him at 16 is great value.

You think that was mostly the influence of LaRussa?
General reviews had the Diamondbacks among first-day winners.

I think it was just Montgomery and his scouting department continuing the fine work they have done. The DBacks don't do many things I like (Closing off their Dominican presence by losing valuable scouts like Carlos Gomez, trading away cheap affordable talent, etc..) but they have been acquiring talent in the draft for a long time.

Maybe they can trade Cahill for a bag of peanuts. What a terrible trade that was by Kevin Towers, as most of his trades and transactions have been. Looking forward to the day he is gone.

Read they signed their top 12 selections from the draft.
That's a great start to restocking reserves, especially considering the high ceilings most had.

Seriously...
3/5, 3runs, 5rbi, 2B/GS and basically stole home again, this time from 2nd, with some daft base running.

D-backs hire Stewart as new general manager
http://m.dbacks.mlb.com/news/article/96 ... al-manager
PHOENIX -- Dave Stewart officially became the D-backs' fourth full-time general manager Thursday, while De Jon Watson was hired for a key role in the baseball operations department.
Both men will report to chief baseball officer Tony La Russa, with Stewart holding the title of senior vice president and general manager, and Watson as senior vice president of baseball operations.
Given the dual hire, it appears Stewart's focus will be on the Major League roster and contract negotiations, while Watson will focus on player development and scouting, areas he had been involved with in his previous role as assistant general manager of the Dodgers.
"I am excited to be able to bring in two talented and uniquely qualified individuals as part of our front-office leadership team that I feel will improve our organization," La Russa said in a statement. "Our various strengths blend well with more than a century of experience in different areas of the game, and we will work together to get this team moving in the right direction."

Let's hope this upcoming #1 draft pick turns out better than the last one did.

The Dbacks were such a joke all year, that double-header beating by the Dodgers in Australia just carried over for 160 more games haha.
Crazy that the Rockies were 45-36 at home this year, which is right in-line with many of the playoff teams, and still finished 30 games under .500

I would be fine if the pick turned out like Upton outside of the whole have the front office trash him, kill his trade value, then deal him for fucking peanuts.

Didn't last years overall #1 pick go unsigned?

Yeah, I guess that is what wooha meant. Thought he was talking about last time the DBacks had the #1 pick. Aiken was a mess, but I wouldn't mind the DBacks using some of the similar game theory considering there is no lock for the top spot. If there is a group of guys they consider to be of similar value see who will sign the cheapest and use the rest of the cash on overslot guys later.

I can't remember many specifics, seems like a decade ago that Hinch was the AZ manager, but I do remember I didn't like him one bit. Was surprised to see his name in the news again.

You definitely don't want to draft a pitcher with an infant's UCL

Nothing like a 2-year contract to inspire confidence and establish authority for a first-time manager. Maybe someone can explain this logic, but creating a lame duck scenario just one full year into his tenure seem foolish, especially in a rebuild that, if done properly, should take 3/4 years.

Hey it worked for the Red Sox with Francona.
