Game #26 vs Stanford

Post by arizonawildcats »

Feb 11 (Sat) / 6:00 PM MST
Stanford, Calif. / Maples Pavilion
TV: ESPN2 / Radio: Arizona Learfield Sports Network

NOTABLES
• Arizona is ranked fourth in the Associated Press Top 25 and Coaches Top 25. It's the sixth week in the top five of the AP poll this season.
• The Wildcats enter tonight's game riding a seven-game overall winning streak, tied for fifth longest active streak in the country. During the streak, Arizona is averaging 79.6 points while holding opponents to 62.6 points.
• Tonight's game is the lone meeting of the regular season between the Cardinal and the Wildcats.
• Another key element of the winning streak is 3-point shooting, where UA is hitting 40.9% while opponents have made just 29.5%.
• The Wildcats have won each of the last 11 meetings with Stanford in Palo Alto.
• Since the start of the Tommy Lloyd era, Arizona is 25-6 in games played away from home, tied for second-most wins in the country.
• Through the first 62 games of Tommy Lloyd's head coaching career, Arizona has shot 50% or better from the floor 34 times. This season, Arizona has three wins when shooting under 40% from the floor. The Wildcats also have 35 games of 20+ assists under Lloyd.
• In Pac-12 play, opponents are shooting 30.1% from the 3-point line against Arizona, second-best in the league.
• Arizona has made at least 10 3-point field goals in four straight games for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
• Nationally, Arizona ranks second in assists/game (19.6), fourth in rebounds/game (41.0) and eighth in points/game (83.3).
• Arizona is one of two teams in the country to rank in the Top 30 nationally in both FG% and opponent FG%, joining by UMass Lowell.
• Coach Lloyd's 55 victories as a head coach are the most by a Pac-12 coach through their first two seasons and third-most in NCAA history - UNC's Bill Guthridge (58) has the most.
• Junior forward Azuolas Tubelis is the current Pac-12 Player of the Week along with National Player of the Week by USBWA, NCAA.com, ESPN.com, Field of 68 and Naismith Trophy. He is a first team All-American candidate.
• Tubelis and Purdue's Zach Edey are the only two players in the country averaging 20 points, 9 rebounds and shooting 55% from the floor.
• The Lithuanian leads the Pac-12 in scoring (20.9), rebounding (9.7) and double-doubles (11). The last Pac-12 player to lead the conference in scoring and rebounding was Leon Powe (CAL) in 2005-06. Only six other players in conference history have led the league in scoring and rebounding in the same season (pg. 6).
• Tubelis has made 207 field goals, the fourth-most in the country. His seven games of 20-points, 10-rebounds are tied for third-most in the nation.
• Redshirt junior center Oumar Ballo was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List by the USBWA and is on the Top 10 list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year. He is eighth in the country in field goal percentage (65.7%) and 19th in free throw attempts (162). He is averaging 15.0 points (eighth in Pac-12), 9.0 rebounds (2nd) and has nine double-doubles (3rd). At Washington, he was 9 of 9 from the field (21 points), grabbed 10 rebounds, had six assists and zero turnovers to become the only player in college basketball to do that in the last 25 seasons. For reference, last year Ballo averaged 6.8 points, 4.4 rebounds while playing 15.2 minutes.
• Junior point guard Kerr Kriisa ranks ninth in the country and first in the Pac-12 with 145 assists. After leading the conference in assists during the 2021-22 season, he's looking to be the first Pac12 player to lead in back-to-back season since Brandon Granville (USC) in 1999-2000 and 2000-01. The Estonian has 319 assists for his career, the first UA player to reach that milestone since Parker Jackson-Cartwright (459) from 2015-18. He has increased his FG%, 3FG%, rebounding and scoring average over last season.
• Since moving to the bench the last seven games, junior wing Pelle Larsson is averaging 10.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists while shooting 52.3% from the floor and playing 27 minutes per game. He ranks seventh in the Pac-12 with 101 free throw attempts and is 42 of 45 at the stripe in conference play. The Swede was one point shy of his career high on Thursday, dropping 16 points on 6 of 7 shooting and 3 of 3 from the 3-point line.
• Grad transfer Courtney Ramey is 19 of 45 (42.2%) from the 3-point line over the last seven games. He is averaging 10.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists in that span as well. The St. Louis native leads the conference in 3FG made/game at 2.50. In his college career, he's scored 1,495 points. He has 76 assists this season after having 53 all of the 2021-22 season at Texas. He is second in the Pac-12 in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.53).
• Graduate transfer Cedric Henderson Jr. was in the starting lineup for the first three games of the year and then moved to the bench for the next 15 games. He was re-inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 19 against USC and has stayed there for the past seven games and Arizona is 7-0 (10-0 for the season when Henderson starts). Since rejoining the starting five, he's averaging 7.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and is 11 of 22 from the 3-point line. He has scored in double figures nine times this season, and his career point total (Campbell + Arizona) to 1,374.
• Freshman guard Kylan Boswell is averaging 5.0 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists over the last seven games. In limited time, he has recorded 42 assists to just 23 turnovers on the year. At Cal, he tallied 10 points on 3 of 5 from the 3-point line. He made his Arizona debut at the age of 17 after reclassifying and graduating high school a year early. He does not turn 18 until April 2023. His best overall game of the season was nine points, six rebounds and six assists (zero turnovers) in the win over Washington on Jan. 5 - the first time a UA freshman put up those numbers since Jason Gardner in 1999.
• After playing just 103 minutes over 23 games as a freshman, Adama Bal has played 207 minutes this season as a sophomore. Last year he scored 34 points and has posted 62 points this year. He had a 6-point performance in 12 minutes against Morgan State on Dec. 22. While he had 14 points in the season opener against Nicholls, his most impactful performance game on Dec. 10 against Indiana, when he went 3 of 3 from the 3-point line in the Cats win. Recently, he went for eight points at home against Oregon State.
• Freshman forward Dylan Anderson had two points and three rebounds on Feb. 4 against Oregon State. Previously he had played six minutes off the bench at Oregon State, where he was 1 of 2 from the field and grabbed a rebound in his first Pac-12 action. Then he played three minutes at Oregon and scored a bucket. For the season, he's appeared in 12 games.
• Freshman Henri Veesaar exploded for 16 points on 5 of 5 shooting against TAMU-CC, including making both of his 3-pointers. He went for five points, three rebounds and two assists against Indiana. The Estonian is 15 of 18 at the free throw line this season. At Arizona State, he had 4
points, three rebounds and two assists in 15 minutes. Veesaar chipped in four points in the closing minutes at Washington.

Line has dropped from -9.5 to now AZ -7.5. Certainly looks like we will get Furds best efforts and the bettors agree

Play tough defense, control the boards and pound it inside. Don’t think we will be draining 3’s like the other night.

Oh and hit our free throws.

Important that we win the games we are suppose too. If we play well tonight we may be tied for the conference lead after the Oregon/UCLA game. Oregon is 9-1 against UCLA in last ten home games for the ducks. Cronin has never won at Matthew Knight arena. Bear down and make it a sprint to the end.

Maples is always a trap game. If we don't take them seriously, they're always dangerous.

That was different. Anybody predict that we would lead at the half if Zu and Ballo were held to 6 + 3 combined?
