The wife and I will be heading to New Orleans at the tail end of Jan, early Feb for a week. I've not been since Katrina. Visited for a week for a conference while in grad school. Fucking American Association of Geographers set up their French Quarter based conference to begin on Fat Tuesday...what chaos. Fun chaos mind you.

Anyway, what are some must visit sights and can't miss restaurants? Already planning on hitting the Hex witchcraft museum, the Museum of Death, and the Voodoo Museum while the wife is busy. She's there for a work conference in the French Quarter and I'll have plenty of time to eat, drink, and hang.

Definitely the national ww2 museum... though I haven't been since it opened almost 20 years ago. I've wanted to hit New Orleans again as an adult.

The Brew Bus looks fun. Bus tour to craft breweries. Might have to try it.

Willie Mae's Scotch House, only if you want to eat the best damn fried chicken and mac 'n cheese ever created.

But for the sake of your social life, get there early. It's got a seating capacity of less than 26 in an otherwise residential area that never got the proper Katrina aid. It is at least a good hour to park and wait for a table, anytime around lunch or later.

I loved the chargrilled oysters from the Acme Oyster House. Not sure if there are better recommendations, but its a start.

My favorite restaurant- Adolpho's... on Frenchman St. It's a small little cajon seafood / Italian place upstairs of a little dive bar. Order anything with the Ocean Sauce.

Anyway, you can get a good Po’ Boy anywhere. I go to Mother’s for the Etouffee.

The best drink I've ever had was a Ramos Gin Fizz at the Sazerac Bar inside the Roosevelt Hotel. Paid nearly $20 for it and it was worth every penny.

Getting beignets at Cafe du Monde is a little touristy, but if you hit the take-out line things move faster. Grab some with a chicory coffee and take the very short walk to the edge of the Mississippi. Plop yourself on one of the steps near the water and take in all the ship traffic going up and down the river.

The one thing to avoid is a hurricane at Pat O'Brien's. Unless you're into the taste of Robitussin, then knock yourself out!

And I don't hate Po' Boys... they just don't give me a chubby like all the other amazing foods in New Orleans.

Etoufee is my jam for sure. Went crayfishing at Apache Lake a few years ago with a buddy. Mostly an excuse to drink. Over night we caught 240+ crawfish by hand in the shallows. Had crawfish etoufee for weeks!

One of the best things we did in New Orleans was not in New Orleans at all. We rented a car and drove to Darrow to visit a plantation called Houmas House. It was a pretty cool experience. Here is what I wrote about it on Tripadvisor:

Never been to a plantation before so I have little to compare Houmas House to however I was very impressed with the property as well as the tour.

They make you watch this 15 minute introduction video before you start the tour which is very drawn out and you do not really learn much from. Not really worth the 15 minutes of my life but we watched it regardless.

The grounds are very beautiful and have been kept up very well through the years. Before you meet up with your tour guide I recomend getting a Mint Julep from the bar. They are spectacular and get the day off to a good start.

The tour is very good and quite informative. Our tour guide was very good and dressed in period garb with top hat, cane, and everything. What was really amazing is that the current owner of the plantation actually lives in the house and was on property while we were there. I found that to be quite interesting.

There is a resaurant that is located in the dining room of the house but we did not eat there. We didn't find out about this until during the tour and had already eaten at "The Cabin" (also recomended).

Once the tour was over we played croquet on one of the large grass areas. We read on their website that they offer croquest so we just had to ask. They were nothing but nice when we asked about it and someone set up an offical croquet for us. Mint Juleps and Croquet on a plantation in Louisiana. Does it get much better!!
