Down 5-4 going into the 9th. Arizona should be up by 3-4 runs right now. They're beating themselves.

Re: 2017 Season Thread
Cats lose 5-4. For all intents and purposes the season is over. That was an epic failure out there tonight.
Re: 2017 Season Thread
Played like shit tonight. 2 failed bunts with a guy on third, another thrown out at home, and just general disinterest. They better wake up or they'll be flying home early tomorrow.

Re: 2017 Season Thread
This has got to be the smallest crowd the Cats have played in front of.
Re: 2017 Season Thread
Cats blow a 5-1 lead in the 8th and season long disappointing Tyler Megill gives up 2 runs in the 9th to let them tie it up. Ugh so frustrating after last year and 2012

So pathetic that you can't close out a baseball team from the state of Delaware.

What huge chokes by the diamond teams to end the seasons.
I can only take so much UA sports disappointment in one year.

9-0. Put a fork in them.
Re: 2017 Season Thread
Cats let the flood gates open. Down 9-0. JJ is going to really have to find some front line pitchers with both Ming and Cloney saying good bye.
Lopes had a great eye for pitchers, and knew what a Friday night guy looked like. I think Lawn has done a nice job bringing these guys along but I don't see a top guy on the roster for next year.
We are the only team to make the playoffs the last 2 years so the trend would say we are in for a tough season next year. Disappointed we rolled over today. Beginning to see why Oregon St went 27-3 in this conference in what was obviously a down year

Re: 2017 Season Thread
Is Ming for sure bye bye? He's only a junior and coming back to be this staff's ace could boost his draft stock.
Incoming major pitching recruits for next year:
Matt Sauer - Day 1 starter, but likely top 3 round pick so obviously odds aren't hot he makes it on campus.
Roman Phansalkar - Future starter for sure, but probably a 6th round or so pick, so coin flip.
Jonathan Stroman - Throws a 94mph fastball and probably picked in the first 10 rounds as well.
Pitching will obviously depend on what these guys decide. Deason, while dog shit today, has been better more than he's been bad, he's a likely starter as well.

Re: 2017 Season Thread
I would say Ming is 50/50 but most of those guys seem to leave after there Jr year. If he stays that really helps.
Deason has good stuff and should find a spot in the starting three rotation but he hasn't shown the ability to tho deep yet consistently. Hopefully we can keep two of those three you mentioned Choo

SS - Travis Moniot/Cameron Cannn

That's my prediction for the lineup next year. Pitchers TBD.

Re: 2017 Season Thread
As far as pitchers go Deason is the only I can think of. From what I looked at for commits Matthew Sauer is a potential first round pick as a RHP. He's bringing in 7 pitchers (4 RHP, 3 LHP). As far as offense goes I don't think losing Lewis or Boyd will make or break us. Should only improve. J.J to the draft a done deal?ChooChooCat wrote:Baseball season officially over.

Re: 2017 Season Thread
Matijevic is a done deal, he's a high pick. Oliva is also a done deal seeing as he's already graduated and will be picked in a decent round as well. Cal Stevenson is the wildcard, but I think he's gone. As I mentioned before I think Deason is a for sure starter, but the rest just depends on if Ming leaves and who actually shows up out of the recruiting class. I think Michael Flynn could become a starter with further improvement as well. Megill maybe, but I've heard he may go pro too as well.catinfl wrote:As far as pitchers go Deason is the only I can think of. I can see Flynn but I won't shed one tear if Megill leaves. They had such faith in him and he never developed into that fourth starter it seems.
JJ will be a millionaire soon with his draft position. Rivas is nice to have back as he should be our go to bat in that line up. Overall we look good offensively but you have to wonder how good we will be up the middle in the infield

Has recruiting been good the last couple of years? I'm gonna try and cover the baseball team next year as Jason and Ryan are both leaving AZDS, but I haven't really followed the baseball team year in and year out until the CWS run and this yeare, but this year was fun. Jay seems to be a really good hitting coach so the offense is in good hands? A likely tournament team next year?
Re: 2017 Season Thread
That should be a fun gig. Love cats baseball. Like always pitching will dictate our run. Also about recruiting its not who we signed, its who we get on campus. I always thought Millers job was crazy but these baseball coaches have to fight each other and pro ball

Yeah I just realized that. That would suck so much indecisiveness, my friend got drafted in the 11th round and was offered 675K to go, but he turned it down and pitches at MSU now, but if that is what you get in the 11th round, I'm sure a 1st-11th round pick would be hard to turn down.

Re: 2017 Season Thread
Haha, maybe they are us in 2017. Go Sam Houston St, win it all. Not sure if FSU won their regional and likely as the 3 seed they would be on the road again but they looked pretty good and are hot at the right time.

Interesting, per Michael Lev, Cesar Salazar is eligible for this draft because he's 21. Just another guy we have to hope comes back now. He'd be in for a huge Junior season if he does return.

Arizona's top recruit in the incoming class, Matt Sauer, was drafted #54 by the Yankees, he won't be suiting up for Arizona. J.J. Matijevic was the last pick of the 2nd round at #75 to the Houston Astros.

He was planning to play for arizona until he was projected to go in the first round, then going to UA was over then.
Kind of surprised he dropped so low.

Re: 2017 Season Thread
Arizona made it out of the first 10 rounds with only one recruit drafted. Blake Paugh, Roman Phansalkar, Jonathan Stroman, Travis Moniot, and looks like Avery Weems are all likely to be drafted, so let's hope it's late enough to the point where they decide to go to college. Cameron Ming, Cal Stevenson, and Cesar Salazar are all likely to be drafted as well, so fingers crossed it's in a round that's too late for all their likings as all 3 are vastly important.

With their second pick of the 2017 MLB Draft, the Yankees have selected right-handed pitcher Matt Sauer from Ernest Righetti High School with the 54th overall pick. If you were left wondering why the team drafted an injured Clarke Schmidt 16th overall, this is why. The Yankees are giving this kid all of the money.
Ranked the 6th-best prospect from the state of California and Baseball America’s 28th overall player, Sauer is committed to Arizona, and he likely fell to the first round over signability issues. The six-foot-five, 210-pound pitcher was considered to be a future college arm, but after a strong senior season, he’s turned himself into a potential signee out of high school.
Over the last year, he has been absolutely dominant with a 0.98 ERA while collecting 142 strikeouts as a fastball-slider guy. His fastball has gone from 88-92 mph to 92-95 mph, reaching as high as 97. Sauer’s mid-80s slider is now a plus pitch and his mechanics have improved, however, his control could still use some work.
He proved to be a dominant pitcher thanks partially to his funky delivery that adds some deception. However, if he wants to succeed at the next level, he will have to add a third pitch. Mechanical concerns and his lack of a full arsenal could ultimately put him in the bullpen, but we’re no where near there yet.
As the 54th overall pick of the draft, Sauer is valued at $1,236,000, though it might take more to keep him away from a program like Arizona. Schmidt will likely not see the money his slot values him at because of his arm injury, so that extra money will be used to line the pockets of Sauer. Hopefully they can make this happen and ensure that this whole plan was worth it.

Ming just taken in the 14th round. He could considerably raise his stock as our ace next year, but it's not an awful spot either. He'll have some thinking to do.

Louis Boyd and Rio Gomez were drafted. One other Arizona recruit, Jonathan Stroman, was drafted in the 39th round. Surprisingly nobody else was drafted.
I'm shocked Cal Stevenson, Travis Moniot, and Roman Phansalkar didn't get drafted, but hell I won't complain.
Pitching next year will be a major question if Ming does sign with the Orioles.

Congrats to him. Watching the CWS you can see how deep the pitching is but also how good defensively those teams are (except FSU LOL).
With the loss of Boyd and Lewis on the infield and Oliva's speed to run down balls I wonder how good our defense will be

Michael Lev's prospective lineup for next season:
C - Cesar Salazar
1B - Alfonso Rivas
2B - Cameron Cannon
3B - Nick Quintana
SS - Travis Moniot
LF - Ryan Haug
CF - Cal Stevenson
RF - Matthew Fraizer
DH - Mitchell Morimoto
SP - Cody Deason
SP - Michael Flynn
SP - Randy Labaut
I like the lineup, but personally would rather see Morimoto in LF and Cory Voss as DH with Haug providing rest for OF/C/DH

Agreed Choo. JJ is really confident in Haug. I have liked that he made a tough transition from Catcher to the outfield look easy but Salazar needs some rest. I would also think MM would be a better defensive option but what do I know. JJ sees those guys everyday.
Need more pitching though. Odds of getting back in the playoffs for three straight years?

Re: 2017 Season Thread
Honestly I never understood the Haug infatuation. I mean he wasn't terrible, but I thought Morimoto didn't deserve to be benched for pretty much the entire 2nd half of the season. Morimoto was a bit cold for a period of time, but not that cold, and Haug was never that hot to justify the move IMO. I also agree that Morimoto is the superior defender in the outfield, but c'est la vie.azcat49 wrote:Agreed Choo. JJ is really confident in Haug. Lots of new options for pitching, so it'll be interesting to see how it all pans out. I think we get to the tourney again, but World Series is a long shot unless the pitching makes a massive improvement by season's end.
