2022 Season

Re: 2022 Season
Cats beat Pacific 13-8. Murphy started but could not make it out of the first inning, giving up 3 runs and only getting one batter out. Davis and Turley went deep.

Stanford At Arizona
This series is kind of buried in the mist of March Madness, but that was an amazing ending. Meanwhile, I was toggling between that and the women's hoops game, and I was trying to figure out what the problem was with the color guy paired with Daron Sutton. You almost couldn't understand him with a professional announcing delivery like a mouthful of rocks, and he seemed to be openly rooting for Stanford. So, it's Ben Francisco, no doubt a stellar student-athlete baseball outfielder for UCLA who briefly played for the Houston Garbage Cans. I don't know what it is; first we had Eduardo (at least Daddy was good) Perez constantly ripping us when we played in the CWS championship against Coastal Carolina, and now this. What, do the networks advertise color commentator jobs as: "The successful candidate will sound like he has a handful of river rocks in his mouth and will absolutely despise University of Arizona baseball." I was halfway expecting to hear the sound of a single gunshot from the pressbox when we won. Anyway, it was a cool win. So I'll put in a few hours at Hi Corbett drinking beer and working on my tan tomorrow afternoon.
Re: 2022 Season
What a great comeback, scoring 5 runs in the 8th. Nice to see Christian come in and get Stanford out 1,2 & 3.

Cats complete the sweep of Stanford, winning 10-3. Davis hit two homers, including a grand slam.

Davis’ HR’s tonight we’re absolutely crushed. Bombs.
Re: 2022 Season
I was next to our dugout Friday night for that first win. One of the bigger crowds I've seen and the place was electric. Can't believe they swept!

Have the OOC game vs ASU this week. Will be interesting to see who we go with for our mid week starter. Would love to thump them

Re: 2022 Season
They didn’t pitch Dawson Netz today, so figure they have plans for him to pitch vs ASU. I think they’re transitioning Murphy to start Sundays now and have Netz handle midweek games.
Re: 2022 Season
I wondered who started today? I assume it was Murphy and he has really progressed.
We are developing some arms in Susac, Long , the lefty kid who’s name escapes me and we have Flanagan.
We have ASSU, GCU, two games with Creighton and two with New Mexico St left in non conference and it would be nice to develop with some consistency with these mid week guys.
I think we can get to 21 wins in conference but I am not sure that would give us a top 8 seed for the super regionals.
Good thing is LSU looks like $hit (lost 2 of 3 vs Auburn) and they are 4-5 in conference. Berry is bombing though but it would not surprise me if they get sent to Tucson to play

Susac started today. Murphy started last Tuesday against Grand Canyon. I have a feeling Hale won't rush Murphy back, he could be on a pitch count.

Re: 2022 Season
They’re comfortable with Murphy to at least 6 innings at this point, which is why I think he’s moving to Sundays.
Re: 2022 Season
So it was Susac today and then Netz probably Tuesday with Murphy moving to Sunday. That would probably be to our strength.
Have Susac, Flanagan, Long, Holden and the rest waiting. As an aside I can’t see a more useless set of games than the PAC tournament which will really tax your arms

Re: 2022 Season
Understand the concern about arms right before the NCAAs, but it seems like an expected fact of life among at least the baseball versions of the P5 college football conferences, and I'm not sure if the lack of a Pac-12 baseball tournament might have adversely affected how the selection committee seeded P12 teams. What I don't like is having it in the heat of Phoenix. Yeah, they've got a bunch of empty spring training stadia, but you're still going to have to play day games in that heat. If we get to host in the NCAAs, we'll play most of our games at night, but unless they use multiple stadia, somebody's going to fry in a conference tournament format. The Big XII plays theirs at the Texas Rangers' retractable roof ballpark. Not sure how they schedule that with MLB, but they manage. I'd much rather play at Chase Field with the roof closed. It would be really cool if they could do it in the nice "May Gray" weather at Dodger Stadium. Or, you could rotate it at the various MLB sites in the Pac-12 footprint. Just because Phoenix money-grubbers jumped on offering to exploit some of their under-utilized local resources, it doesn't mean it's the best thing for the Pac-12 conference. We'll see how it goes and if it gets re-thought somewhere down the road.

ASU Scout
The days of the conference title resting solely on the six game home-and-home with ASU in the 60's and 70's are long gone. There have certainly been rivalry moments since then, from Nardil to Pat Murphy playing the heavy (literally.) But Arizona has forged ahead in the last ten years or so, with 2 championship game appearances and a title, while ASU's last title was over 40 years ago. So we play a mid-week game at Muni on Tuesday, with whatever level of excitement attaches to it. To that point, the game will only be available via streaming.
ASU is 13-16 (5-4 Conference) under new coach Willie Bloomquist. They've gone 1-9 combined against BYU, Oklahoma St at home and against UC Irvine and Oregon St on the road. Their highlights are in their last two league series, both at home, when they went 4-2 against Washington and Cal.
Hard to say what they'll do pitching-wise. You'd assume they'll hold back their #1 RHP Kyle Luckham, and their #3 LHP Adam Tulloch, for Stanford this coming weekend. RHP Brock Peery has been their closer, with limited innings. I guess I'd expect a pretty random bullpen game. In any event, this is roughly what their lineup has consisted of:
Batting Order:
CF Joe Lampe .311 8 HR 8 SB (Bats Left)
DH Jacob Tobias .268 2 HR
3B Ethan Long .317 4 HR 4 SB
1B Conor Davis .333 5 HR
SS Sean McLain .296 3 HR 2 SB
C Ryan Campos .250 1 HR
LF Nate Baez .307 2 HR
RF Kai Murphy .261 1 HR (Bats Left)
2B Alex Champagne .246
Bench:
C Will Rogers .225 1 HR
Pitching Rotation:
RHP Kyle Luckham 3.80 36/8 42.2
RHP Jared Glenn 9.49 10/8 12.1
LHP Adam Tulloch 7.39 41/18 35.1
Closer:
RHP Brock Peery 4.85 14/6 13.0
Bullpen:
RHP Chase Webster 2.50 19/10 18.0
RHP Will Levine 3.37 19/10 26.2
RHP Tyler Myer 3.78 33/14 33.1

Odds & Ends
We have a .762 record in weekend games against such ranked teams as Texas Tech, Texas St, UCLA, and Stanford. We have a .625 record in mid-week games against unranked teams. Our biggest issues seem to involve rusty players coming back from injuries, which seems to account for at least some of the unsettled play at second and third, and continuing issues with the #3 pitching spot. Here's a stab at a lineup with stats at this point of the season:
Batting Order:
CF Mac Bingham .287 2 HR 4 SB
C Daniel Susac .403 6 HR (Switch)
RF Tanner O’Tremba .383 3 HR 2 SB

3B Tony Bullard .184 2 HR
DH Noah Turley .258 5 HR
2B/3B Garen Caulfield .228 1 SB
SS Nik McClaughry .246 1 HR 2 SB
Bench:

2B/3B Jack Grant .250 1 HR
2B Tyler Casagrande .250 3 SB (Bats Left)

Re: 2022 Season
That game last night really bummed me out.so many unearned runs. Casagrande is doing as best he can playing out of position but at the guest levels you can’t give teams 30 outs in a game.
Worried about our pitching long term which is what r have been worried about since JJ left. Granted we have no idea how these arms might develop or how the new guys might do but our mid week pitching has been leaky at best

Geez...At Least They Salvaged The Finale
And Murphy had a good outing, with 5 innings of 5-hit, shutout ball. We've talked about the injuries and roster shuffling. Per Lev's comments, if anybody figured they were "all that" because of the mid-season standings, it's Chip's job to straighten that out. Next up: New Mexico St, then at Utah. The Utes recently took two of three at the WSU team that just beat us, then this weekend they played three straight one-run games at the UCLA team that also beat us. Yeah, they lost all three, but they didn't lose by 8 and 4 runs like we did. In a case of interesting scheduling, we'll play the normal Thursday through Saturday series at Utah prior to Easter Sunday. But then we'll travel from SLC to Omaha to play two against an 18-8 Creighton team that swept three from Minnesota, and took another from Nebraska at their home: Schwab Field (also home to the CWS.) Our two games there will be televised on FS1 and the CBS Sports Channel. I hope that's not a distraction from the Utah series, considering the way we've been playing recently.

Beautiful SLC
First things first against NMSU tonight...but we'd better not have too much trouble with them. Then, on to the frozen tundra of Salt Lake, where the high tomorrow will be 38, with a chance of snow. It'll warm up Saturday to a high of 67, with thundershowers in the forecast. Fortunately, UArizona's outdoor teams all have an illustrious history of playing bravely and brilliantly on the road in inclement weather...um, never. Okay, I'll amend that. In the early 1980s, Arizona had a night football road game at Washington St in frigid conditions with the field surrounded by plowed snow. If memory serves, on a team that relied heavily on passing, Tom Tunnicliffe was injured, and freshman Alfred Jenkins had to play QB. Arizona went physical and only attempted 1 pass (incomplete), and won the game. Really too bad they couldn't have won without attempting a pass, but so be it. In any event, the baseball team needs to turn it around at Utah and Creighton, whether they see snow, rain, sleet, flaming hail, or clouds of green mist.
Re: 2022 Season
Up 2-0 in the 8th and the next 9 games (tonight, Creighton for two, Utah and ASSU) might tell the take on a top 16 seed. We really should go no worse than 7-2which would put us at 30 wins on the year and allow us to finish with 36-38 wins on the year

Tied 2-2 now and they are still batting.
Edit - got out of the inning tied.
The DH (Ryan Grabosch) for NMSU is a kid from our old little league out in Vail. His dad Jason is a good guy who played for UofA in the late 80s.
