Re: 2019 Season Thread
Going to be a lot more talented pitching options that we've had since Jay's first season.

Re: 2019 Season Thread
In a summer league game, Austin Wells, our future Catcher/DH starter hit for the cycle and hit an extra homerun for good measure.

Is Jacob Allred related to Doug Allred (both from San Diego) who played football at UA in the 50s (and who has donated a boatload of money to UA athletics)?ChooChooCat wrote:Every single one of those guys you listed are coming to campus.baycat93 wrote:does anyone have a full list of the incoming class... this is what i have gathered poking around, although not positive all these kids are coming. So, having 6 draft picks choose to go to college is typical or no?
Re: 2019 Season Thread
Follow up question for those in the know... the class looks pretty big... were they expecting more guys to go pro?azgreg wrote:So, having 6 draft picks choose to go to college is typical or no?
Looks like we carried 46 guys last year. This class is nearly 1/2 that.

If they're all late round picks, absolutely normal. Most of those late round picks are made to build an early relationship with players for future drafts.azgreg wrote:So, having 6 draft picks choose to go to college is typical or no?

Re: 2019 Season Thread
Baseball is notorious for freshmen transferring out if the playing time isnt there, so they can go to a JUCO. They can be drafted after their one JUCO year as well if they are good enough and if they're not then they have a leg up due to experience at their new university for their junior year. Max exoduses happen ALL THE TIME.baycat93 wrote:Follow up question for those in the know... the class looks pretty big... were they expecting more guys to go pro?azgreg wrote:So, having 6 draft picks choose to go to college is typical or no?

Another follow up question. After a player stays 3 years in college does the team that initially drafted him keep the rights to him?ChooChooCat wrote:If they're all late round picks, absolutely normal. They're completely open to be drafted by any other team at any other spot in the draft.

Do the teams then get a compensatory pick for losing the player?ChooChooCat wrote:Nope.azgreg wrote:Another follow up question. I believe that only occurs if they dont sign their 1st round pick, maybe 2nd as well.azgreg wrote:Do the teams then get a compensatory pick for losing the player?ChooChooCat wrote:Nope.azgreg wrote:Another follow up question. Re: 2019 Season Thread
One more Freshman to add to the roster in OF/1B Branden Boissiere. He was a USC signee ranked 302nd overall in his class by Perfect Game. I'm not sure what happened with USC, but he never made it to their campus and instead is with us now. Very good late pick up obviously.

Saw our class was rated #3 by baseball America I think. By far the highest class in the conference

Re: 2019 Season Thread
Just throwing our my perspective normal lineup based on the little things I've heard:
C/DH - Austin Wells Fr.
1B - Branden Boissiere Fr.
2B - Jacob Blas So.
3B - Nick Quintana Jr.
SS - Cameron Cannon Jr.
RF - Ryan Holgate Fr.
CF - Matthew Fraizer Jr.
LF - Donta Williams So.
DH/C - Matthew Dyer RS So.
Friday Starter - Randy Labaut RS Jr.
Saturday Starter - Andrew Nardi Jr.
Sunday Starter - Up for grabs, but watch for Bryce Collins Fr.,George Arias Fr., and Nate Brown Jr.
Closer - Up for grabs
There's a few other guys in contention for an OF spot like Justin Wylie who's a grad transfer, Blake Paugh, Boissiere could also come into play in the OF if 1B doesn't work, and Tyler Casagrande another Freshman. I think Dayton Dooney (another freshman) will get some time here and there in the infield as well as DH, although his time to shine will come after Cannon and Quintana go pro. As far as pitching goes it is indeed the deepest rotation Jay has had at Arizona since he's been here. There's literally about 12-13 guys or so that could come into play. You can certainly make the argument that strictly from a talent standpoint this is by far Arizona's deepest team in a very long time.

Re: 2019 Season Thread
2019 Recruiting class
Will Bartlett C/1B
Ian Churchill LHP - JUCO
Hunter Cope RHP
Hunter Cranton RHP
Andrew Dalquist RHP
Jose Dicochea RHP from Sahuarita
German Fajardo RHP from Nogales
Kaden Hopson C
Blake Klassen OF/1B
Garrett Irvin LHP - JUCO
Zach Martinez RHP
Colton McIntosh - INF
Chandler Murphy - RHP
Dawson Netz - RHP
Jacob Shaver - Utility
Netz is the jewel of the class, Day 1 starting pitcher if he makes it on campus. Lots and lots of quality pitchers in this class, especially from Arizona. Bartlett, Hopson, and McIntosh are all likely contributors in regards to position players.

Re: 2019 Season Thread
Not sure what to take from an exhibition game but we beat Cal St Fullerton 17-13. I saw we had the highest rated class coming into the league this year and it was as high as #3 nationally by some ratings

Re: 2019 Season Thread
It was pretty much a scrimmage, went 20 something innings, same for the BYU deal, which we won by 1 run. There's really nothing to take from it, it's predominantly for the coaches to figure out their personnel better. Yeah our incoming class is real good, lots of freshman/JUCO guys will contribute immediately.azcat49 wrote:Not sure what to take from an exhibition game but we beat Cal St Fullerton 17-13. Closer - Up for grabs, but Andrew Nardi, Nate Brown, Gil Luna, George Arias, and Randy Abshier are all possibilities, although most likely going to be a situational type job

Re: 2019 Season Thread
They should definitely be a NCAA tournament team this year. The talent is in place for a CWS run, but not sure the experience is there for that. Lots of freshmen starters like you mentioned, but a big influx of talent, and a much deeper pitcher rotation.Newportcat wrote:What do you think is our ceiling with this team Choo? Re: 2019 Season Thread
So first pitch is this Friday. Looking forward to hopefully follow a cat team that has no drama. Saw where Oregon St put three of its pitchers on the 3 all America teams. They will be tough but hopefully this is a CWS vontender

Re: 2019 Season Thread
I didn't realize this until now, but we play 3 game series AT UCLA, Oregon State, Stanford, and ASU. Those are the top teams in the conference alongside us. That is just brutal.
Re: 2019 Season Thread
No kidding Choo, talk about a gauntlet. If we could go 6-6 in those games you would have to feel pretty good I would think. I don’t think we have won 20 games in the conference since 2012. Would be nice to win at least 18 this year

Re: 2019 Season Thread
Honestly this team is so hard to peg at the moment. They have more talent than they've had since probably 2012, but the majority of the talent are freshmen, so we could get 20 wins in the conference or we could be .500 in the conference I wouldn't be surprised either way.azcat49 wrote:No kidding Choo, talk about a gauntlet. I've heard good things about Flanagan, but didn't expect him to start over Weems. It's early though, so we'll see how rotation settles. Labaut, Nardi, and Collins may be a main stay though.
Re: 2019 Season Thread
Opening night. They are honoring Trevor Hoffman with a bobblehead night. S cool that even MLB network did a short piece on it as they rehashed how he was a SS at AZ. He did have a gun when he made those throws from the hole.
